Late night surfers, the radio scene will change at the witching hour!

The Dawn of G101

Hey, do I get a bonus? Or at least a damn beer--for giving "consultant" Hitman Hilton the G101 flip? (Yeah, stolen from G105/Raleigh-Durham... but I was the one who stole it). :)

A little sloppy this morning, but using the ex-103 imaging voice (who is that?) is pretty clever. The listener may never connect the dots, but they'll know that it's a familiar voice.

I'm still concerned that GMR risks losing the gains made over the last year by screwing with the music mix too much, and (for whatever it's worth) I'd recommend that they revisit that part. If their recently converted P-1 listener hits the 101 button and hears a set of Hoobastank, 3 Doors Down, and Rob Thomas they'll shoot their radio--that's "mom's music." Worse yet, they'll hit the 103 button and never come back. (No, I'm not a fan of the local Monopoly). My kids (all in their twenties) happen to be caucasian, but that's not the kind of music they want to hear. The key to CHR today is hip-hop... and to a lesser degree, rap.

Dayparted Top 40 died a grueling death about 4-5 years ago; it's a Nineties Thang. Gotta decide what your gonna do... then do it 24/7. Pick one: AC or CHR?

Actually mountaineer....you mentioned it...but it was Ted Simpson himself who came to me with that name before you ever brought it up :)

You are close...he is NOT the 103 voice...but rather the former voice of WPRR-Altoona and his name is Mitch Craig. Heck of a great guy and what a set of pipes.

You're hearing things....all the music changes and switches were made over a month ago right under your noses when the HARD DRIVE CRASHED!!! The pieces come together now...So when you said you had people listening last weekend who loved the sound...well it will sound the same this weekend too cause all the nuts and bolts stuff was already done. The clocks were on the air testing for all the world to hear. AJ, Ted and I are sneaky that way! The name change was just the last piece of the puzzle...a new set of curtains if you will :)

Re: The Dawn of G101

Well I'm listening....

Tell the girl to turn herself up when she talks over a song. (just now over "Blurry")

Also, "You and Me" twice in the same hour????

Music mix and imaging and talent and all of those other things are important, but GMR's biggest problem for me has been sound quality. Recently a song was on Hot and GMR at the same time and I went back and forth a few times and the difference in quality was stunning. I don't know if it's a matter of operator error or bad equipment. It's not all the time, but the problems are still there.

Anyway, keep up the good work though! I miss Hot 107.9 and would love to see Forever keep losing the battle.

Oh....I used to work at 3WZ in sales, and am still an avid listener, fan, watcher of the industry. I've been lurking here since the shake-up but never felt the need to post.

Kudos!

It's just like those "suits" to claim credit! Okay, I guess I'll have to buy the beer. Mitch Craig? Memphis? I used him on several stations back in the day--God, he must be about 90. (Yeah, great pipes). And I'll take your word on the music--I'm way the hell out of the demo, so I'm easily fooled. Well, keep up the good work. Haven't seen a real CHR battle in 10 or 20 years. They're fun to watch... safely on the sidelines!

Tell your sales staff to be prepared, though. The Evil Empire is gonna portray this as another format change (Alternative to Hip-Hop to Top 40) and buyers other than yourself are going to say the Spring book doesn't count: "It's right here in the CDT--they waited til the end of the book and then changed format." So in the numbers game, WGMR will be perceived as starting from zero as of 7/1/05. Sales is a tough arena--and your AEs are gonna have a lotta 'splainin' to do.

Mitch Craig was most recently heard in the market on 93.7 the Bus. He was the Bus voice for a few years and they dropped him last year.

Re: The Dawn of G101

AAAHHH another one! "Now here's Mary J Blige with Family Affair", as the intro to a Creed song is playing underneath!! Come on!

Give us a few days...AJ will have the "G" running like a well oiled machine in no time. Some things were kinda last minute, as Mitch did not complete his on-air imaging masterpiece for us until Wednesday!

Thanks for checking it out though...its only gonna get better from here!

I've never seen Ted in a suit....not sure he even has one nor would it fit him...he's the most average Joe you'd ever meet and a hell of a great guy. Still, I bet we could take you up on getting you that beer sometime...Have to let us know what watering holes you frequent since you caught on to our plans a bit early that way old man!

Your jocks not knowing what they're talking about isn't a matter of last-minute refinement. Just heard another one -- Mariah Carey's new album isn't called "Confessions of Mimi". Would the average listener know or care? Probably not. But, it goes to credibility. If people who work in radio don't know certain information and how to pronounce artists names, etc, who should?

I don't mean to pick on you guys, that's just who I happen to be listening to today. 3WZ and Forever's weekend staffs also regularly butcher intros and song titles and artist names.

250 Out of 296!

That's the State College market rank: 250. Happy Valley is closer in size to Casper, Wyoming than to New York City. The closest any State College air talent will ever get to New York radio is a taxi ride down Broadway. (No, that's really not a good excuse for making basic mistakes; but, given the market size and talent level, us listeners gotta be a bit forgiving). If we want great radio, we can move to New York! :)

Of course I want people to read my work! At least I'm not masking my identity. :)

Can I get a little bit of clarification on what you mean by that? Are you saying that State College air talent isn't good enough for large market radio? Jus tlooking for your honest opinion please.

Checkked it out myself out of curiosity. Sounds good. But how come when this happened on WRSC right after they moved to a new bulding, the bitching and moaning was endless even though everyone knew a little patience was needed to work out the kinks?

BTW, sounds like you are leaning toward a full-time gig at G101. May I suggest the mornings?

At least Adam was nice enough to do a story on it. It's factual, not unflattering.

I would suspect that what he was getting at is that at least out of the box, the overall pool of air talent may not be at that level...not saying they cannot GET to that level as many successful people have come through this market or ARE IN this market!!! However it is far more likely that a PD may have to hire beginners and groom them to get them to the level he or she needs them to be at.

Some of the air talent in this area are more seasoned than others, but the spirit is willing and they are all working hard. Some people I know and even some I work with at G101 have done time in some rather impressive markets, more impressive than ones I have ever worked in. There are beginners in the market too...and well that's OK! When its not ok is when the PD just throws them on the air and pays no mind to what they are up to. That tends to happen a LOT which is why you hear people all over the place that sound so bad. Fortunately we do not subscribe to that theory....AJ rountinely critiques and helps groom the talent.

If he does his job well, we will be hiring all the time because our people will leave market 250 for market 150, then 75, then 50, then who knows!!! It is small market radio...so the good guys usually do not last long around here.

I think that was the point of the comment!
