One rock station in Orlando, really?

Actually, 96.9 The Eagle is more like "soft" classic rock, IMO - it's not "classic hits" like Magic 107.3 in Jax, or SunnyFM in Orlando. It's just watered down classic rock.

Boring, stale format. The same 200 "classic hits" songs over and over..............

I think Jrr does a decent format.. best Rock station in Central and S Florida (well SE Florida has 0). JRR plays most styles from 80s to 4-5 new songs per hour. As long as they play New Music and mix in alot of classics (90s-2010) they should stay around 4-4.5 share. They can do alittle better if they play even more new rock. New Music=WIN!

98 Rock is the best sounding rock station in Florida, hands down. WJRR is all over the board and WFYV is erratic. Rock 104 (WRUF) in Gainesville used to be very good too.

Sad, that in 2012 there are only a handful of rock/active rock/new rock stations still around our state.

disagree with 98Rock.. they still lag behind in Current Music... They play maybe 1-2 new songs per hour at most.. and it's mostly (not all) songs that came out 4-6 months ago. JRR at least plays 3-4 new songs a hour.. that is "New" and current top 25 Active Rock... sometimes 5.

I guess if we have 18-34 male listeners out of Lakeland.. we can find out what station they listen to since both signals probably come in good enough.

I agree though with the rest.

Funny thing is both WJRR & WXTB both run the cheap channel active rock automated music service (or whatever it's called) on overnights (except during specialty shows). So basically they're (with the exception of the liners/sweepers and local spot breaks) a simulcast along with many other cheap channel active rockers who are running it during those hours. Check it out for today, 1/9/2012 starting at 12:00AM.

They are not the only ones. Project 96.1 from Atlanta does the exact thing as well. I'm sure most rock stations owned by cc do it also.

That simulcast crap is embarrassing... although I realize Clear Channel is doing that everywhere with a number of formats. 98 Rock is probably positioned slightly older since "New Rock Alternative" 97X exists in Tampa Bay whereas WJRR has no such Orlando market competition.

Why isn't there a "new rock alternative" in Orlando anymore? There's a hole here...............

No there's not. There's only a "hole" when you have an audience. "Orlando" has proven over the last 10 years that one "rock" station is sufficient. If that wasn't the case, WJRR's ratings would have doubled after the lost of O-Rock a few years back and most recently WHTQ. You might like the format, but the majority of AM/FM radio listeners in central Florida aren't missing it.

Agreed on JRR's competitive situation. I've noticed a slight shift in their format to try to keep anyone from getting ideas about flanking them, but I think they're pretty safe.

I have noticed that they've been playing Black Keys, and I did think it was a bit strange for them. Still liked it though, since it's something I haven't heard too often.

Besides the lack of bad DJ banter, the playlist seems to be the same. If I got better reception, I'd definetly go to 98 more though.

It's really funny when listening to the deejay try to sound live by giving information that sounds specific. "Just go to our website and type in the keyword".

Something funny, someone at work was playing some recent stuff by various bands I haven't really had the chance to listen to. I was thinking about it and I remember when O-Rock and Real Radio weekends were around and I got to hear a lot more of that. I also liked JRR better when there was something to turn to when the DJ banter got real annoying. I really miss this when the weekend deejay has to put on some unfunny sketches of him interviewing himself as a basketball player.

O-Rock didn't have the same exact format as WJRR, there were a lot of songs that each station played that the other didn't. There is a lot of current music that is not geting played in Orlando and I was hoping a new radio station could take advantage of it. Instead we have people proud that they can "re-invent a format with songs that you've heard a million times".

Don't know if it has been said but with the HD stations I have found that I have more rock/alt selection than I think I ever have had here in Cent Florida.

Problem with HD stations is their coverage area is still not as good compared to the regular analog, you are one of about four people in Central Florida that actually owns one and knows how to use it, and from what I've read on other boards, those HD stations could flip to a different format on a dime and/or shut off for weeks at a time without anyone noticing. Not to mention the fact that HD stations are not being promoted on their main stations in anyway, shape or form at all.

That really bums me out to hear that Frank. Because ever since I got HD for my car I've been loving it.

And it also really puzzles me that the stations that have HD channels are not promoting it. I know they do some self promotion for their own HD channels on said channel. Is there some conflict of interest with some contracts that all the major broadcasters have with satellite?

I know that the car manufacturers have not helped HD at all so far, at least here in the US, locking people into satellite for the kickback that gives them. However I was encouraged to see on hdradio.com that some are finally going to come around: http://www.hdradio.com/buyers-guide/new-car

HD Radio is so unpredictable. This last week where was HD 96.5-2 (96 Rock)? Nothing but dead air there. Thank God for O-Rock on 105.9-2

Aside from the new Hot 95.9 from WPOZ-FM 88.3-HD2 & Smooth Jazz 102.5 from 107.7HD2,
the only station I notice a main signal advertising their HD2 signal is Mix 105.1's website & their Amp Radio 105.1-HD2.

Have you noticed the gigantic HOT 95.9 billboard on I-4? That's allot of effort for just a 99 watt signal...

99 watts at 446' above ground level. And a big signal that goes with it.
