Online radio listening posts..

I tried Atlantic DX tonight, but I had no luck receiving anything from North America at 0500Z--05:20Z. Even old reliable WBBR wasn't making it. Assuming the antenna has been repaired, conditions must not have been right. Lots of Spaniards, but no TA.
 
Even still, Atlantic DX always says 'offline' when I look at the station list and I've long since been approved for access to all stations.

Is there any specific time they come on?
 
They were available last night, from what I saw....

Their support is very good. They will help with any problem.

At the risk of saying something stupid (a particular "talent" of mine).....

Is it possible that the TA path is being affected by the recent high level of aurora borealis activity? Northern Ireland is pretty far north....equal in latitude to southern Alaska, IIRC. On top of that radio signals between North America and Europe follow a "polar path" that arcs in the vacinity of the arctic circle....similar to the route that airliners take. Is it possible that aurora borealis activity could have the effect of blocking those signals?

I freely admit that I don't know....just wondering if that could explain that skywave signals from elsewhere in Europe are present, but nothing from North America.
 
I finally made it on to the Atlantic MW DX tuner and listened to the frequencies of 660, 770, 880, 1030, 1060, and of course 1700 to hear something from the US but I did not and I was surprised to find that all those frequencies except 1700 had fairly good signals by at least a couple European stations on them.

On the nights when the US stations do come in, I take it they are strong enough to compete with the closer ones I was hearing?

For some reason, I had pictured the above mentioned frequencies as having nothing on them other than if conditions were right for the US stations to be heard.
 
Well I just checked out Atlantic DX and heard WBBR, WINS, WWKB, WIOD and WFED. No WFAN or WABC tonight when I listened. There was quite a bit of QRM on most except WBBR.
At least I snagged a few, but conditions were nowhere near as good as they were in November and December. Heard only east coast tonight. No midwest or Canada when I listened between 0500--0530Z.
 
^ Funny, but I thought his radio was quite selective....I wonder if he has had to switch radios to a less selective one. I heard WIOD 610 once on that node, with 612 being a Euro frequency.

How about 590 (normally VOCM)?

I just heard VOCM but it sure was getting hammered, obviously from the sides. If radioman heard WIOD, then I say all is well. :)

I just hope that it's the conditions themselves, and not the radio and/or antenna.

The regulars (VOCM, WBBR, Boston-1510 and 1200) that seem to signal decent TA conditions were all pretty strong last night. But Toronto was missing...1010, 680, and 740 are usually fairly easy but oddly there was not a sign of them. Seems like there's more adjacent channel splatter than there was before Atlantic MW DX went offline for a while, but maybe it's just my memory that's off ;)

I also noticed more adjacent channel splatter. I noticed it when trying to tune in several stations. I did not notice that previously.
I wonder if a different receiver is being used?

Earlier tonight on the Atlantic MWDX, I heard WIOD with an ID and a stronger signal on 660 that had to be WFAN because it was a Nets basketball game.

Then the receiver went offline.
 
Would love to listen to the normal band, but the side splatter tonight was a lot to take....went to X band.

I was able to hear my local WJCC 1700 based on what my li'l radio was playing about 8 seconds earlier. I did hear KVNS about a month ago on this UK rx. How KVNS blasts, but WJCC is a tough catch (despite both having similar power/patterns) is beyond me!

I've never heard KVNS on that receiver, but I have heard talk in a language which is unknown to me. I'm assuming what I heard was WJCC.
Are there any X band stations in Europe?

I was going to say the same thing. It was weird hearing KVNS alone without WJCC in the background as I do here.

Though it was a barely audible signal, I knew it was KVNS because of the oldies music.

There are many DXing videos on YouTube with good catches of KVNS from different parts of Europe but none of WJCC that I'm aware of anyway.

Maybe the reason KVNS gets out so well compared to all the other stations on that frequency is that the ground conductivity of where they are located is the best it can possibly be for land, a 30.

And maybe they also have the right kind of transmitter for getting the signal out too.
 
As to WJCC, I am sure they are running at normal power. When they signed on in 1997 in Spanish as WCMQ (and, I was alerted to it by their CE prior to official sign-on), there were reports all over the world of them---they signed on long before KVNS.

WJCC's live stream is here....AND, it is over a minute *behind* the live radio, so be sure to jot down whatever you can make out. The language is Haitian Creole, not quite French, but has similar words. (I'd put the UK rx at about 8 seconds behind live, so you will hear the *UK rx* first:)

They do air a lot of block programming, and you might hear an English disclaimer like "The views and opinions expressed are those of the host, guests and callers, and do not necessarily reflect those of Radio Mega WJCC......."

I'm sure WJCC is easily heard in Haiti at night but I wonder if KVNS conpetes with it too.

With a good receiver, maybe they could even be heard on the coast there in the daytime, though the ground conductivity in south Florida isn't nearly as good as it is where KVNS is and might be a factor on how well it gets out on the saltwater too.

Radio Monte Carlo programming has now switched over to TWR Arabic and has faded, though at times audible. A couple of stations are popping up, with religious programming in English and other (Malay based) languages. Presumed DYVS and/or DWRV, although the former's stream is not working and the later doesn't appear to have one.

This node must be a really serious set-up. Very cool!
