Online radio listening posts..

What a difference a day makes.

I've been checking the Atlantic MWDX receiver a lot through out the night and can't hear anything on any of the frequencies where I got catches from the US the past two nights.

It's as if I was listening in the daytime.

I'm experiencing the same thing in WA over the past couple weeks. I think I got WBBM once in two weeks, and CJYM was ABSENT last night. It's been the ordinary N-S, N-S, NW-SE, N-S, NW-SE conditions, c'mon E!

Crain--when you hear WBBM does KKOH give you a very hard time or are you able to null it?

Sometimes I can completely null KKOH, but other times it's floating under Reno. Last night I received a threshold under KKOH on 780 which I'm sure it's WBBM. However conditions to the E weren't the greatest last night, just a bit better than others.

Last night on MWDX on 1660, I was hearing WGIT from Canovanas, Puerto Rico with WCNZ Marco Island.

Both signals were just audible enouth to hear,

I had my portable radio on at the same time and WCNZ was loud as usual but I discovered for the first time that I could hear WGIT in the background when I tried to null out WCNZ.

Was this on Atlantic DX?

Yeah, the one in Northern Ireland.

And I'm surprised how much time I can spend there without anyone coming along to ask to tune.

You'd think it would be among the most busy receivers of all.

I asked to hop on Atlantic DX while someone else was using it. He kindly bowed out. Nice people there.

I haven't used it much lately because I don't find the reception to be anywhere near as good as it was in November & December.
The receiver seems to be not as sensitive as the one that was being used then. When I try to tune in several frequencies that I listened to back then I get adjacent channel splatter now. I'm not positive if it's the antenna or the receiver, but something is different.

It's offline again.

I noticed that the other day. I suspected that something wasn't working right. Hope he can fix it before MW DX season ends. That has been such a great listening post in the past.

The Sekule (Slovakia) node is still a favourite of mine.

I'm monitoring 1566 and have IDed TWR Benin (100kW) coming through in French, along with the 750 watt 'County Sound', from Peasmarsh, Guildford UK. British talk can be heard further underneath, it having a good chance of being BBC Bristol (rated @ 630 watts). Possible snippets of Persian/Farsi are coming through as well, but trying to track down that fleeting signal is a challenge. :)

***ATLANTIC MWDX - Northern Ireland, on GlobalTuners.

The node is back for this DX season. The antenna has been re-errected, but I don't think it is quite right yet, needs some tweaking.
This is where I request your help, especially regular users. Have a listen over the next few days and give me your impression.
I know it's still early in the DX season, but signals at sunset time seem to be down on what I remember from last year, could just be conditions are poor ?

Alan,

First, thanks again for bringing your receiver back online.
I have noticed that North American signals have not been coming through. The first station I listen for to check conditions is WBBR 1130 in NYC. Last year it was regularly the strongest. This year I haven't been able to hear it. There have been some auroral conditions here, but I suspect there might be something else going on as I have yet to hear any North American station since you went back online. The only one I think I heard is Cuba on the Ex-band. Are there ex-band stations in Europe because I am hearing a few on those frequencies?
Just my observation. I generally listen around 0400-0500 UTC.

Thanks!

Hi,

Yes I thought the band was a bit lacking in NA. As you say some Spanish on the X-Band and that is only because this part of the band in Europe is only frequented by Low power (mostly Greek and Dutch) pirates.
Problem is with the KAZ loop nulling (done by remote variable resistor), unless it is adjusted correctly, then I may as well have a dipole up :-\
Being located at 55 11N latitude, brings me close to the Southern limits of the Auroral zone, with all the rubbish and unpredictable propagation that brings with it !
Hopefully the null has now been set in the correct place, I can adjust a pretty deep null on any single frequency or by just generally setting it for the centre of the band. But if there is particular frequency or nusiance European that requires being delt with I can peak it on that one, (just let me know).

Cheers
Alan

Still not out of the woods yet, it was working great up untill 30 mins ago. Dunno whats happening, losing the null, poss due to thermal drift on the Vactrol as it gets colder. Will have to leave it untill daylight to investigate.

Goodnight.

OK Alan. Appreciate your efforts.
Speaking of pirates, the last few days I heard an interesting one on 1690 playing a strange mix of country music & oldies. No ID so I figured it's a pirate.
If you know where that's coming from maybe that can help you with your adjustments.

Alan, good to have you aboard. Believe me, I am no expert (living in Florida) on trans-Atlantic AM DX....but I'd figure VOCM 590 to be the first, if not the best, TA beacon. It sure sounded clear when I heard your node.
