Online radio listening posts..

A few nuggets from last night (1/1/20),,,,

I was on the Westfjord, Iceland SDR around 8:30 (CST) 0230 (GMT).....

A couple of surprising catches. First was WSSP, Milwaukee, on 1250. All of the Chicago blowtorches were absent, as were the two other most likely big signals from Milwaukee (WTMJ and WISN). So then comes 5kw WSSP comfortably on top of the channel. Sports talk interrupted by "Van Horn Auto Group" spot. (Milwaukee area auto dealer). Later I was hearing KCJJ on 1630. Perhaps not all that surprising since they've turned up multiple times on the Norway arctic SDR.

Others of note last night... CKAC, WHAS, WBZ (apparently the null misses Iceland), WCKY. As would be expected, the band was dominated by European stations. Probably more from the UK any other European country. BBC on 693 and 810 (Scotland), along with Sports Talk 1089 were all blasting.

WSSP--Quite a catch considering you didn't hear any Chicago or Milwaukee stations. A few nights ago I heard WISN on the Arctic receiver. This season the Alaskans have been really getting out. I've heard Alaska on the Arctic & Hawaii receivers. In fact KNOM has been coming in almost everytime I check the Hawaii receiver fighting it out with KKOH. BTW: even with their null WBZ often is heard on the European receivers.

Took a quick trip on the Arctic and Iceland SDRs tonight. 1130 on Arctic was WISN. On Iceland it was a fairly strong WBBR.
670 on Iceland was KBOI. No Chicago stations showed up on either receiver. Tried for WSSP, but all I heard was a loud heterodyne.

It's just after 4 pm with almost two hours to go until sunset and I can already hear a listenable signal of KNX on the Maui SDR.

I really like the central New Jersey SDR because it's not far from where I grew up DXing.

So I am listening now at 1 pm their local time on 1520 to see if there's a midday sky wave from WWKB but nothing.

Instead, I'm hearing WCHE from West Chester, Pa and some much stronger Spanish speaking station I can't ID and no such station in that region is listed in the frequency guide.

Any guesses as to what that is?

Tried out the Arctic SDR this afternoon, pretty interesting. At 5pm CST (2300 utc), I'm listening to KBRW Barrow (strong with oldies) on 680, then switch at the top of the hour in time to hear the CNR1 time signal and ID on 1377 at similar strength. Also interesting, hearing "VOA" jingle from Thailand on 1575 under RAI Italy and VOA news on 1530 from Sao Tome, and Syria on 783. I need to check this more often!

You'll enjoy it.

I'm becoming a fan of the St. Paul, Alberta SDR. At around 3pm CST this afternoon, 2pm Alberta time (2100 UTC), I was on 1490 and had CJSN from the southeast corner of Saskatchewan (1kw) blasting in all alone like a local from 200 miles away. "Next door" on 1500 was KSTP almost as strong. Although "critical hours" were approching, this receiver is a great choice for daytime skywave in a location where this time of year you're likely to find it.

Thanks for the insight I'll give it a try.

At 2 pm their time, WWKB Buffalo Sports Radio is already present on the central Jersey SDR.

In my very early days of DXing in south Jersey when they were WKBW and playing top 40, I was unaware of daytime sky wave and only thought the station could be heard at night.

If only I knew then what I know now.

Took a ride on the Arctic SDR in Norway about 0630Z. 680 was a strong KBRW Barrow, Alaska playing 60s oldies. 770 was a battle between Calgary and KTTH Seattle. KTTH most often on top.
Also checked out the Kaneohe, Hi receiver and caught WGN around 0640Z. I've been wondering why KDWN seems to be regularly absent on this receiver. I noticed that they are probably running lower power from a different sight. That would make sense as I've not heard them at all this year on this receiver.
Checked out 780 and briefly heard WBBM in back of KKOH. It's the first time this DX season that I've heard them on this receiver.

The few times I've gone on the Arctic SDR I like to hear the Longwave broadcasts it picks up / picked up. One of them I think is now off the air (NRK Norway).

On the Arctic SDR around 0600 utc last night (1/12/20), 1130 was a mix of CKWX Vancouver and KTLK Minneapolis, both with clear ID's. 1380 had an almost-armchair signal from KRKO "Everett's Greatest Hits", and 1190 was a strong C2C, either KEX or WOWO. Interestingly, looking at the sub-polar path from the SDR, Vancouver is only about 400 miles further from the receiver than Minneapolis is.

The Iceland SDR is also very interesting. On 920 at 0530 utc 1/11/20, caught a clear ID from Radio Nacional de Paraguay, 100kw at ~6,500 miles.

St. Paul Alberta SDR again, and how's this for daytime skywave....

2:00pm cst, 1pm MST today (1/12). 2000 UTC. KSL in with a weak but listenable signal and positive ID. 1050 miles.
