Optimod 8000A Thoughts

If you can find a Behringer Combinator MDX-8000, set the pre-emphasis to 75us, then open up the 8000A and jumper S1A (part of the test operate switch) to ground. This way, the 4 band Behringer does the work & the 8000A does the peak limiting. It's not as loud as an 8100 & XT2, but for the money, it smokes & is remarkably clean. When using anything that has pre/de-emphasis in front of the 8000, doing that trick with the switch allows for a few DB increase in loudness vs when using the internal AGC/limiter in the 8000.

A station I was at in the late 80's had an 8100 for their main transmitter and an 8000 for their backup. I always liked the 8100 (espcially with card 0 and a set of Texar's). I always found the 8000 to be a "grunge" box if you tried to push the modulation.

In the day we used a Compellor and a pair of Texar Audio Prisms at the studio. At the transmitter we used an Orban 8000A and a composite clipper. Talk about some punch for the time.

Moving to real time, on one of our FMs we are getting an awesome sound out of a Compellor 320A at the studio, Mosley Digital STL, and an Optimod 8400 at the transmitter site. Sounds Sweet and LOUD!

Good Luck!
