Optimod 8200 Signature Series

No argument ,just a vast difference in judging processors and their capabilities. No need to apologize to anyone .. Frank has a great BS detector and keeps fresh batteries in it at all times. After this thread i'm sure he had to replace a few. (Ha)....

Thats an interesting comparison.

The market I'm in uses 8200's Omnia FM's and Unity's ('if it aint broke don't replace it'). Even smaller markets in the same company use 8500's and O6's, very frustrating for me. The whole market is processed quite nicely, but it would only take one station to upgrade to something new and everyone would have to change. Infact a station in a smaller market 100km away uses an 8300 and it blows all the metros away! Good news is an 8500 is on the CAPEX XMAS list for all our stations.

Back on topic however and I would like to ask the question. Would you choose an Omnia.FM, Optimod 8200, or Unity 2000i? They're all from the same era, and I think most have had a play with all three.

I know I'll be hissd at, but I think I'd go with the 8200

You know menotti1 you seem like an all right guy. I just don’t understand why you dislike Greeks and their tastes in audio processing. I’m sure an 8200 sounds great playing those Grecian rock & roll hits. Hell, I’ve even used Grecian formula in my hair from time to time.

During this holiday season lets see if you can open up your heart to our Greek engineering buddies. Yes, they too deserve good FM audio.

Enough Said

An 8200 would probably be fine as long as you have the latest firmware version and don't push the clippers too hard. On Orban's comparison chart, they say an 8200 is 3 dB quieter than an 8500 at an equal distortion level.

MP3 guy, nothing against Greeks, just one that would even consider that price for a OLD 8200,heck spring for some more cash and get the 8300 or Omnia 5EX.Hey Stace,if you're gonna replace any 6's with a 8500 please let me know.i'd be a player on all of them.NOTHING on the market will beat the 6 in clarity and loudness. Not the 8500,there have been players that tried....

OK,

Let's pick the best of the bad!

The 8200 was an "OK" box once the firmware was upgraded...particularly on AC or Oldies. I'd probably choose one over the others.

That said, I'd take an Aphex2020 over an 8200, and, as I recall, their list was less than the 8200. But that wasn't a choice, was it? My bad.

I never like the sound of the early Omnias.

No Stace, you will not be hissed at, my Grecian brother. I too would prefer the old 8200 that sells for big bucks on Ebay. If you liked the 8200 you will love the sound of an 8500. That old Orban guy still makes one helluva box.

You may notice I said we would be replacing 8200's, Omnia.FM's and Unity's with 8500's (not O6's with 8500's)

I have no say in what they install, but I happen to like the 8500's. If I had my way, I would put an Omnia 6 on the Breeze (easy listening) currently running a Unity. Because I think the O6 is better at sounding clean and open. But I would put 8500s on The Edge (top 40 currently Omnia.fm), The Rock (currently Omnia.FM) and More FM (hot AC currently 8200) because I think the optimods can be pushed harder without falling apart, particularly on vocals. I know this will stir some s@#t but thats my view.

The only Aphex 2020 Ive used was when the DJ's complained about the latency on an O6 so we found one and installed it to process the headphones. I would rather put up with the latency

I would like to hear the new DSPXtreme. It looks cool, wonder how it runs?
