Origin of "Kiss" Montage

Exactly..."if you want me, just whistle. You do know how to do that, don't you? Just put your lips together and blow." They only used the first sentence in their "whistle" montage. :-*

They just don't make 'em like that anymore! What a great movie!

As an aside, the WHSL calls and "Whistle" moniker were first used in Wilmington in the 60s. 1490AM. I think Dusty Dunn worked there at one time. Calls moved to the FM is the 70s. Always thought they were great calls for a Top 40 station.

When I heard WHSL it was album rock. It could have been top 40 once.

That must have been a long time ago; the "Whistle 100" I remember (mid- to late 90s) was country until they swapped signals with 94.5 in 2001. By the time I first heard of 94.5, they were WGBT "94.5 The Beat."

The original WHSL was in Wilmington - 1490AM and was Top 40 in the 60s. Moved to FM in the mid-to-late 70s and transitioned to Album Rock! Calls showed up at 100.3FM in Greensboro in the mid-90s.

100.3 had been WGLD (Beautiful Music), JOY-FM (don't remember calls)(Soft AC), WWWB (B-100FM)(AC), and some variation of FOX before becoming Whistle 100!

Bernie Mann owns, or at least partly owns "Our State Magazine". Very upscale coffee-table magazine you see in lots of doctors and lawyers offices. Yeah, Bernie was not a nice guy in those days. I heard so many stories of firings at Christmas, not paying people for work they did for him, on and on. I hear he's mellowed. I think it's best he's not responsible for a lot of people's lives now. He sure created some misery in his day. He had the original revolving door for the sales staff.

As for 100.3, calls for Joy-100 were WOJY, and for The Fox was either WFXF or WFXC. They were looking at both calls at one time and I can't remember which one actually became their calls. Think it was WFXC.

I've had a subscription to "Our State for probably 25 years and have always enjoyed it..Didn't know Bernie Mann had anything to do with it..Doesn't change anything thou..Still like the mag! APE!

I remember telling Bernie that I made more money doing voice work for FOX TV that I did being his PD at WWWB. He responded "glad we could allow you to do that!"

When Bernies son was about 8 he was asked by a staff member what he wanted to be when he grew up. He said he wanted to be just like his dad. "Why is that" he was asked. "So I can fire people". :'(

Last I heard, "young Bernie" was selling advertising in Chicago - WGN.

I remember walking into a studio one day in Raleigh and there was this kid sitting there playing with the console. I said "I don't know how you got in here, but you need to leave!" It was Bernie's son. Neither of them fired me - that time!

WFXC is the 107.1 half of the Triangle's Foxy 107.1/104.3, and has been for as long as I can remember. They were the local hip hop station until K97.5 moved to the Raleigh market, at which time Foxy switched to its current soft R&B format.

Hmmm....must have been WFXF. It was called the Fox and had a really cool format that wasn't really allowed long enough to catch on. Our new owners wanted a Country station...WHSL. Of course once Clear Channel bought the group killed WHSL to protect WTQR (It became WVBZ The Buzzard). THEN they changed 94.5 from Rock Alternative to Country!!!! They felt they needed to maintain another Country station that they could control and that would never be too popular. It was really kind of amusing to watch them keep the station just bad enough not to compete with WTQR. How'd you like to be THAT PD? How'd you like to be THAT sales staff? ::)

I was referring to the Wilmington station. Sorry.

WHSL 100.3

I've never understood why Clear Channel killed off Whistle 100 WHSL. It seems like they could have done well with 2 country stations. They are doing well down in Greenville/Spartanburg with 92.5 WESC and Whistle 100 WSSL. Now they have to compete with 93-1 The Wolf.
