Other than Optimod and Omnia...

With a programming background....I feel your pain. Not everyone understands stuff sometimes happens.

Being off isnt acceptable, of course..but being prepared is. :)

Yes but the 8100 doesn't crash. Grin

High five! Somebody who gets it!

No, caps just dry out, parts age and others become almost impossible to find.

I like the 8100a. It was (and still is for analog) a brilliant piece of equipment. But just for the simple fact that I can generate a MUCH cleaner MPX signal in the digital domain, it's worth it.

Anyone use a Wheatstone FM-4? They look interesting and are priced like a David.

Hey PaulyBoy -- just curious: Why is it that you only post on this board to bash Wheatstone (or Vorsis) processors?

If you can't beat 'em, bash em!

That being said, get a demo of both and decide for yourself. Both have their merits and drawbacks, but bottom line is that you won't know how it's going to sound till you you put it on the air.

By now, most - if not all - on this list should know to "try before you buy." Being a consultant and equipment reseller, our firm moves more of Omnia. One than any of the others mentioned. The sales numbers don't lie.

Exactly as others have said, try each one before you buy. You wouldn't buy a car without a test drive. Your ears may like one better than the other for reasons that aren't easily explained. One may work in your market better than another with your format and audio chain.

That said, being a consultant and contract engineer, I've put more Omnia gear in lately than any other brand. Haven't heard the newest Wheatstone box yet, but would like to soon. Orban, while solid sounding, has a design and features that were state of the art in 2000. Other than a new clipper in the 8600, not much has changed. If you like the Optimod sound, it's there throughout the whole line from 5500 on up.

The BW Broadcast box with the Ariane in it is decent, though not a huge fan of their clippers.

What size market are you in? Are you competing against the big guns with seemingly unlimited cash to throw at processors or are you in a smaller market where there are still a lot of 8100's chugging along?

A lot of Omnia 6's and 8200's. A few 8300's and one 8500. Also, one Omnia 11.

What is your budget? I really think you would like the FM4.But getting a demo of a couple of units is good.I've heard the david 4,nice box,but still like the fm4 better.

If you have a old processor available, seriously consider either Stereo Tool or Breakaway. With a coax switch hooked to your remote control, there's little reason to accept lesser processing.
