P!nk on 92.9

Heard P!nk's Kelly Clarksonish song "Who Knew" on Mix 92.9 this morning. Is 92.9 venturing further into hot AC territory without a full-time hot AC station here in Nashville? I don't recall hearing it on 92.9 back in 2007 when it was a hit. V-102.5 was playing it quite heavily at that time.

"If someone said three years from now" that Mix 92.9 would have been playing that one, I would have doubted them!

It's just the evolution of AC radio from the softer music of years ago ... It's interesting that some of the cool tunes from the 80's
that played on Top 40 stations ("I'll Melt With You", "Addicted to Love", "With or Without You", "Love Is A Battlefield")
are mainstream and work well. Even Fine Young Cannibals and Spin Doctors!

P!NK actually has two songs on rotation! The current rockin' hit "Please Don't Leave Me" (Video is a bit weird) and "Who Knew".

Mix is still extremely AC oriented, not Hot AC. AC is just taking in a little rockier music, like Train, Nickelback, Daughtry, The Fray
and AC/DC.

Okay, not the latter band. Rupert wouldn't approve.

I have heard "I Melt with You" on 92.9, albeit only once. (Interesting to note that I never heard that one back in the '80s when it was supposedly a "hit.") Most of the others that you have mentioned, I have heard on a fairly regular basis there.

So if CHR hits from the '80s become part of today's AC playlist, then where do AC hits of the '80s go? Might explain why we don't hear Air Supply on AC radio (or anywhere!) anymore. E-Z listening, anyone?

I think Mix 92-9 should play: "You Shook Me All Night Long" -AC/DC, "I Love Rock and Roll"-Joan Jett,
"What Have You Done For Me Lately"-Janet Jackson, ...just anything that would make the
average listener crank it up a little. If they're gonna play P!nk, ok, but they could
play "So What" or "Don't Let Me Get Me". I am so bored with that station. They need
to be more like Jack and be a little more daring.

They play "Hold on Loosely" .38 Special

(I sure hope this meets Firepoint's rigid standards)

Get over yourself. No one else changed subject lines. What made you better than anyone else here?

Back to topic, I have long thought that as 92.9 got "rockier" as Tibbs put it, while 105.9 continued mellowing out, that eventually they would have nearly the same playlist, or they would "cross" each other going in opposite directions.

Some ACs also play "Get the Party Started", so those Pink songs aren't a stretch. As far as playing AC/DC, never--though they could play it on some sort of flashback show, but not in regular rotation. I'm all for the format evolving, but that would go a little too far.

I thought maybe Mix was wanting to compete with Jack, but they're sister stations.

Is it PC to call "Jack" a "sister station" in 2009?

Doubt AC any station plays AC/DC. Would be an interesting format, I guess.

Most of us on here are not exactly the Mix target listener.

OK, AC/DC is a bit of a stretch. How about "Jump" by Van Halen? When 105-9 was AC as WLAC, they
played it once. Probably only once.

RE: 38 Special on 92.9:

They play "Hold On Loosely" (as Dean mentioned) and "Caught Up in You," but both are also in regular rotation on 105.9, which tells me that their playlists are becoming more similar, rather than different. (105.9 also plays "Rockin' Into the Night," so that is about the only difference between them and Mix 92.9, as far as 38 Special is concerned.)

Why doesn't anyone still play "Second Chance"? I know that that is not typical 38 Special, but I have always liked that one. (I recently heard it on 92.9, but that was only during Delilah.) And I never hear "If I'd Been the One" anymore. That was the one with Julianne Phillips (now the ex-Mrs. Bruce Springsteen) and a bunch of horses in the video.

The line "she was willing and that's all there is to say". That's why. Mix 92.9 is geared towards female listeners and they (we) get tired of hearing the stereo-typical male response of why men can't keep their pants on. The entire song is about some poor guy who's lost his integrity, his woman found out, now he's begging to start over for something he's probably going to do again.

Delilah is based in Seattle, so they don't have the same consultants as Mix. Delilah is trying to appease the small male audience that's being forced to listen by their female counterparts.

That's why.

In the very few times I heard Delilah, she has played "Into the Night" by Benny Mardones. Chasing jailbait, or I have been missing song's meaning all these years?

"She's just sixteen years old
Leave her alone, they say
Separated by fools
Who don't know what love is yet
But I want you to know... "

And .38 Special "Second Chance" lyrics received scrutiny.

Jailbait and Adultery are not the same. I'm not condoning either one. Love has no age limit (except for the legal part, and then in some states 16 is considered a consenting adult), but .38 Special is talking about a home-wrecker. People in Nashville get it. The rest of the country is in la-la land, thinking, "Oh, what a great song! I don't know what it's talking about, but I love it!" "Ain't No Sunshine" was about an underage girl, but still a great song, and crossed over into several radio formats. The subject matter doesn't make it a bad song, but it's had more time to establish itself as a classic, opposed to "Second Chance" that came out during a time when record companies started caring less about music and more about money, giving it a greater burn-out factor.

I'm not sure I'm buying this. Nixing a song because it is about an affair? If that's the case, then the oft-mentioned "Escape" would be gone from their airwaves, too. Granted in the end, he ends up right back with his wife, but the guy sought out an affair, and even advertised in the personals!

I have never heard of any feminist backlash against "Second Chance," so I ain't buying that, either.

Not to change the subject but when Patti gave birth to a ten-pound baby boy, were she and Billy married? (Young Turks/Rod Stewart)
and should Mix be playing a song about drinking beer at noon on Tuesday in a bar that faces
a giant car wash? (All I Wanna Do/Sheryl Crow) ...I'm only kidding ...

Does Mix play "Follow Me" by Uncle Kracker? Depending on who you believe, it's either a woman who is or considering cheating on her husband/boyfriend or it's about drugs. And what about "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" from Heart? It's about a woman who cheated on her man because he couldn't produce what she really wanted: a baby.

Then there was Ruby! Remember "Ruby, don't take your love to town!?

If my memory serves me right......he shot her for 'taking her love to town.' All she had to do was turn around.

I can't recall ever hearing "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You" on Mix, but they still play "Follow Me" as if it were still a current hit! It's eight years old now! I looked it up! Songs on AC radio apparently must have a very long shelf life!

^^
Yeah, they do. I remember hearing "If You're Gone" by Matchbox 20 on an AC countdown Dick Clark used to host. That was back in 2002 and "If You're Gone" was released in 2000.
