Palm Coast getting new FM Country Station come August 1

From what has been reported, 98.7 FM will launch in Palm Coast with a Country Music format come August 1st. The call sign was set to WPLC until yesterday becoming WAKX. All indications from this is that the new station will be called Kix 98.7. It has been interesting to watch Palm Coast grow to have its own little cluster of radio stations build from the ground up over the last 4 years or so. Good for the Flagler County area that is own metropolitan area have something of their own and not having to rely on Daytona and Jacksonville for radio stations.

So far, the Flager County Radio group has had an excellent record of launching very focused, good sounding radio stations in Palm Coast. I would think they will do very well with their Country station as well! :)

I take this is the same group that runs Beach 92.7. Nice sounding station, hope they do well with the new Country format. They probably should though considering the Country signals out of Jacksonville and Orlando are weak enough that even car listening can be problematic.

Any spacing issues here? So much for listening to 98.5 KTK out of Gainesville/Ocala or 98.9 WMMO in Orlando. What will be the power, HAAT, etc...? Will signal sneak into Ormond/Daytona?

4000 watts on a 340 foot stick. So it would be a Class A station. Just enough to cover Flagler County with a local signal with a 50dBu rimshot hitting St. Augustine, Daytona and Palatka. As for WKTK and WMMO you shouldn't have too many issues unless your right in Palm Coast or anywhere near the transmitter. I'd say about 10 miles or less.

Not sure why you think this. 92.3, 99.1 & 99.9 are all very receivable all over Flagler Co, as well as Daytona's 93.1...and to an extent, Ocala's 93.7. Flagler is super served when it comes to country as it is now!

I wish they'd move 100.9 to 98.7 so it wouldn't interfere with WJRR as I'm passing thru.

Those country stations may very well be receivable. I'm just going off of Radio Locator contour maps and seeing which stations have at least a 50dBu (preferably 60dBu) signal. Both 92.3 and 99.1 are covered with a 50dBu fringe signal in Palm Coast. Should be good in car but nowhere adequate for home listening. Jacksonville's 99.9 is barely within the 40dBu contour zone as well as Daytona's 93.1.

The only country station I see with a signal of 50dBu + over the entire county is 93.7 out of Ocala. So the only station I see having a somewhat local signal over the county is that.

It has to be pretty exciting getting a new radio station off the ground! I agree with the earlier comments, it's really good to see an operator such as the Flagler County Radio group offer a number of formats for Palm Coast area listeners to enjoy and call their own.

I was checking out the WNZF website and came upon some interesting stuff. You may get a kick out of seeing furniture arrive and the studio being built for Kix Country 98.7. For an added bonus, check out the "Beach" party too. Here's the link" http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ21Ym6M6AKDr8oxy35yEWg?feature=watch The Orlando board has reported progress with the transmitter.

Listen real carefully to the voice behind the camera. Perhaps a bit of old news now but a "magic friend" has been helping the Flagler County team getting Kix started up. Great choice. ;)

John,

I think you gave it away as to who it might be, but I am keeping my mouth shut on it right now until August 1 rolls around....wait that is two weeks away. LOL

Yes, I spoke with someone who gave me a big clue today. Even though I was one of the original interviewees for this new position, I agree, from hearing his work here in Jacksonville, this person is an excellent choice! The Flagler County Radio Group has good people, and now they'll have one more! Good Luck! :)

JT Thomas is the new morning guy. He's on the air now in testing mode. In other Palm Coast news. REACH COMMUNICATIONS, INC. is selling FM translator W273BR/PALM COAST, FL to PHILLIPS BROADCASTING, LLC for $65,000.

Phillips buys translator

You can almost bet Kristine will move the translator into St. Augustine, raise the power and use it on WFOY. That should help her revenue significantly.

Who wants to air check Kix's first official day next Wednesday? I think this will be a bit of treat for everyone if someone can who is down in the Palm Coast area.

Well it is really official....our friend from the former Magic 107.3 - JT - is officially the new morning guy that will be waking up Palm Coast on Kix Country 98.7 as it was announced just about an hour ago on the Kix Country 98.7 Facebook Page. Glad to see JT back on the air and not have to make a move again to another part of the country. Palm Coast is going to be glad to have a pro like JT on the air there. Again glad to see him back on the air and not going far away at all.

Maybe it's just me, but witnessing the birth of a brand new radio station is pretty cool. Looking through Kix's FB page, I've noticed a number of former Magic 107-3 listeners seem to be following J.T. to his new gig. When J.T. came to Magic, some Detroit listeners followed him too. I remember a few actually getting on the air. In bean-counter speak, we are told talent doesn't matter much. More and more, I don't even recognize radio anymore. Listeners, especially displaced ones don't matter much to anyone either either. 3 major companies in Jax - you tell me, what's different about any of them?

As I look to the south, I see a glimmer of hope - a small operator who actually gives me the impression of putting the listener in the center of it all. I've heard nothing but positives about the management too - a rarity for radio. Personally, I hope Flagler County Broadcasting becomes a mega success and eventually they buy a station or two in the Jax market. For anyone who believes Jax could use some new blood, a new direction and not super-serve one format to the point of lunacy, I suppose we have to wait.

Ironically, J.T. is beginning a new chapter just 5 days shy of last year's Magic birthday bash. To me it seems like a few weeks ago, but radio moves at such an incredible pace sometimes. With all the depressing news of Jax ownership staying the same, it's probably unrealistic to hope the Jax radio market could actually begin offering more format variety anytime soon. When I think of the ever growing number of talented broadcasters out there who know this market and have demonstrated success, there is no place for them. Maybe there is no news in what I am saying. But I'm convinced a small operator running a couple of stations here on a local level would have to be better than what we've got. I'm just sayin'...and good luck J.T. I'm stoked for you!

I understand the translator that WFOY has purchased is approved and it is only a matter of time. I listened to them on line for almost two hours and would not have know what it was if it had not been for the station ID. The station desperately needs help with imaging and on air presentation and would assume they suffer from some of the same problems in their sales arena. Speculation here.

The new Kix Country 98.7. Very good on air talent, great jingles, decent imaging, but poorly programmed. Are they programming for PPM? PPM will never hit the Daytona market. Stopsets out of the top of the hour legal ID? No bumpers of any kind going into other stopsets? And the music mix....ouch. Lots of good things going for it, and not to late to get the music and hourly clocks right.
