Maybe it's just me, but witnessing the birth of a brand new radio station is pretty cool. Looking through Kix's FB page, I've noticed a number of former Magic 107-3 listeners seem to be following J.T. to his new gig. When J.T. came to Magic, some Detroit listeners followed him too. I remember a few actually getting on the air. In bean-counter speak, we are told talent doesn't matter much. More and more, I don't even recognize radio anymore. Listeners, especially displaced ones don't matter much to anyone either either. 3 major companies in Jax - you tell me, what's different about any of them?
As I look to the south, I see a glimmer of hope - a small operator who actually gives me the impression of putting the listener in the center of it all. I've heard nothing but positives about the management too - a rarity for radio. Personally, I hope Flagler County Broadcasting becomes a mega success and eventually they buy a station or two in the Jax market. For anyone who believes Jax could use some new blood, a new direction and not super-serve one format to the point of lunacy, I suppose we have to wait.
Ironically, J.T. is beginning a new chapter just 5 days shy of last year's Magic birthday bash. To me it seems like a few weeks ago, but radio moves at such an incredible pace sometimes. With all the depressing news of Jax ownership staying the same, it's probably unrealistic to hope the Jax radio market could actually begin offering more format variety anytime soon. When I think of the ever growing number of talented broadcasters out there who know this market and have demonstrated success, there is no place for them. Maybe there is no news in what I am saying. But I'm convinced a small operator running a couple of stations here on a local level would have to be better than what we've got. I'm just sayin'...and good luck J.T. I'm stoked for you!
