Palm Coast getting new FM Country Station come August 1

Not that I can find. And can't write one down, when there are times, you can go an entire quarter hour and not know a song.

This should help you understand the playlist: http://wakx.tunegenie.com/

As for the stop sets at Top of the Hour...they are eventually going to have Fox News at top of the hour and that is why it is programmed like that. Give JT some time as he is getting his hands wet with this in programming the station. This is in no ways meaning that they are programming for PPM, but programming for Palm Coast and the surrounding listening area.

The reason the station had to get on the air was because of the construction permit expiring in December thanks to the original holder waiting until the last second to sell out. I believe the station has to become operational under the construction permit for a bit in order to get the full permit if I am right.

This should explain things a bit clearer and again give JT a chance in programming. He will do well with this and I know it.

From what I understand about the situation, this is pretty much correct. There's no doubt that the staff had to hustle to get on air by their target date of August 1st! As a result, they are definitely in a building mode in programming. I'm sure that the station will sound quite a bit different six months from now than it does today! PPM ratings are not their concern, it's all about revenue. In a sense, since they already pretty much "own" the Palm Coast market with their three existing signals, they will be competing with what they've already got, so building new revenue and expanding their base will be their concern. Flagler Broadcasting has done an excellent job so far, so there's every reason to believe they will continue to grow and prosper, and hopefully provide a new, dependable, entertaining, LOCAL station with Kix Country! Best of Luck to JT and the Flagler Team! :)

I agree with the last two posts. Today Fox News debuted at the top of the hour. Already hearing the music getting better, and tighter.

It will be interesting to see how they drive revenue on this one, and compete with themselves. They are very strong with the other stations. The Easy Oldies format probably is their weakest of the bunch in terms of revenue.

Jim Martin is a great broadcaster, dating back to his days starting WMMO. We'll all be curious to see how long he keeps these, before selling them.

I would like to see how much they erode way at 93.1 Krow Country's ratings. I hear the signal is listenable down in the speedway area and if that is the case that might not be the best news in the world. The listeners Krow had in Palm Coast/Flagler County will be gone now thanks to Kix, most likely.

All I know is I am a radio guy myself (yes I do hold a communication degree and have done radio via at Flagler College's WFCF for two years, internship at 1010XL and just most recently a scoreboard show for high school football at a small station in Jasper last year). I would actually drop what I am doing now (running a high school football website) just to work for a group like Flagler County Broadcasting and to be under a pro like JT and learn more from him. St. Augustine and Palm Coast are two areas of the state I like, but yet close to anywhere I need to get to without issue (i.e. Jacksonville or Orlando).

Thank You! Upon looking at the playlist...I could live without the Jerry Reed & Merle Haggard but that is just me...Personal tates aside...placement of the 2 Gold Selections is way too close together looking at Merle & Jerry in the 9-10:30PM Time Frame this evening.Otherwise they seem to be pretty Mainstream and on the Mark.

Very true on the classic artists and titles. So far their too deep, and frankly just too old for the proper mix. Even breaking them up the way they have been, still cause a train wreck.

However if you go on Kix's Facebook page, the response to the playlist and selection has been great. I will take having a better mix of today and yesterday than the same 25 songs over and over again.

I think their mainstream approach is good. But the mix of the gold/classics is just off. Hey its really improved over this week, so their doing some things right.

I see a lot of stations doing this and I will never understand why when you are airing a Country Format with Legend Artists like Alan Jackson,Reba,George Strait,Kenny Chesney,Tim McGraw still actively recording music you would skip over singles like "Gone Country","Whoever's In New England","Unwound","She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" and "I Like It,I Love It" to go back into the 60's & 70's for Gold by Artists that the many listeners who are 35 and under never have heard of before.WKRO is doing similar...mostly new with a "WTF" tossed in like Ronnie Milsap and Crystal Gayle.

It's called mass appeal and is working quite well in many markets. WOGK is a prime example of a Top 100 market number 1 station that programs a carefully balanced new and gold based country music mix.

I listen all the time to Kix Country 98.7 and rarely even hear a jock, even on the morning show. Never hear the afternoon guy. Computer issues?

Listeners were invited to a ribbon-cutting event yesterday for Kix Country as well as their EZ Oldies station. I was there and I got a “kick” out of the whole event. I enjoy talking to people and working the crowd so to speak. You can gain a lot of perspective that way.

My views about radio, talent, the management, listeners and sponsors were reinforced. When they all work in harmony, especially for the new kid on the block, it can greatly increase the odds at success.

A few people who were sitting by me were from the business community and are sponsors. They seem pleased and see local radio as a means to grow their business. For the Flagler County area, advertising on Kix Country probably makes more economic sense than going with any of the bigger markets that surround Flagler.

It was good seeing J.T. in the studio. It reminded me that radio is indeed at its’ very best when that person behind the mic can get you to smile or laugh or get you to think or make you want to call the station or respond on FB. I also met their afternoon guy, Kevin Kane. He has a good sense of humor. The wonders of radio – he VT’d his show so he can enjoy the fun too.

I was honored to meet with GM David Ayres. If there was a litmus test, he passed it. He talked almost exclusively about satisfying the listeners. That’s what it should be about and all the other goals will fall into place. Sadly, the business of radio has morphed into something that has made radio cold and impersonal. They say it’s progress and it reflects today’s tastes. To me, it’s a bunch of BS.

There are certainly merits to a small company that values opinions of each member of the team. There's a lot of experience and love of radio in that building. The cluster has variety in formats and to me, it gives the community lots of choices. Funny, when I said goodbye to J.T., I guess it really hit me that he has moved on and the Jacksonville chapter has closed.

On my way back home, I was reminded that it doesn’t have to be a small company to make a difference. It should be about giving a local team a little more leeway to make decisions. There’s way too much control and interference. When things don’t work out, if you notice, senior management never takes responsibility. Then the local team is usually blamed. It's a funny way to conduct business, especially one that is obsessed with money.

At any rate, I heard Sunny 105.9 most of the way back. A while back, we heard the usual excuses. O-Town is a young town, there’s lots of ethnic diversity. Oldies won’t work. I guess all the experts were wrong. Maybe one of these days, a new way of thinking will come to Jacksonville where they will realize one size doesn’t fit - no matter the format -all and if you are paying someone to make decisions - give them the opportunity to shine or not. I’m glad I made the trip. It sort of lifted my spirits that good radio still does exist.

JohnJax, I'm glad you made the trip! I was there as well, and, ditto to your observations! David and his staff have put together a top class, locally oriented, group of radio stations, that are involved, and very much, part of their community! As you witnessed, even in this digital age, when done correctly, it's still possible for Radio to be enthusiastically appreciated by both listeners and advertisers. Even though, geographically, Palm Coast and Flagler County is in a unique position to receive most of the main radio signals from Orlando, Daytona, Jacksonville, and several other radio markets, the people of Palm Coast have embraced their LOCAL stations in a big way! Great job, Flagler County Broadcasting! Bravo! :)

Nfladxer, it would have been cool meeting you. I suppose we’ll just have to wait for that next opportunity. You, no doubt, have lots of stories to tell and I would be all ears. ;)Unfortunately, J.T. did manage to get me on video. I should have known better as he’s a photography junkie.

The road ahead is probably not an easy one. Revenue can be a challenge for even the best of them. But what I see is a passion to win in that team. The owners have embraced technology and they have made the necessary investments to give them a fighting chance.

They recently installed an in-studio webcam. They stream. Listeners can hear them on their smart phone. They don’t run on the cheap using the excuse they are a small company. They are smart – listeners demand access on multiple platforms. They get out in the community and really they have gotten back to basics. That's a great foundation to begin the journey.

It does take a team all working together to win. As you probably know, J.T. runs with the BBQ (Big Burning Question) feature to solicit listener response and award a prize. He carried that over from what he did @Magic 107-3. In almost a year’s time, no one @CC seemed to have what it took to sell that feature. In a day or two at KIX, one of the BBQ joints sponsored it. To me that says a lot. CC has almost an entire floor devoted to the sales team. Well, you do the math.

Those who run radio in Jacksonville seem to show passion at winning only when a cash-cow in the cluster seems threatened. It’s about them. It’s not about a partnership with their listeners. It’s so frustrating to be so close yet so far. I’m way too far north to hear EZ Oldies from Flagler County. I’m about 5 tiny miles too north to hear Sunny 105.9 decently in the car. It’s such a frustrating reality bites kind of thing that our town has so much of the same thing. If you like what is provided you are lucky. If you don’t, radio doesn’t deliver and it’s mostly in the off position. It doesn’t seem to make much sense. Still, the optimist, I hope we eventually get some new blood here. That's probably the only way we will see meaningful change here and a break from the status quo. We need it and soonest.

Yes, JohnJax, I would have enjoyed meeting you as well, and, yes, some of the stories would have been Cool, or is that Kool! LOL Any given radio station, or group, in my many years of observation, is usually never better than the person in the leadership role, whether that be the GM, PD, OM, ownership, or a complimentary combination. In Palm Coast, David Ayres "gets it", and has assembled a great staff of "can do" people. People relating to people - relationships - that's what radio is all about! It gets results for the listeners, the advertisers, and the owners. Best of luck to the folks at Flagler County Broadcasting, they seem to be on the right path to the future! :)
