Palvino-"On the Air"

I had the great pleasure of running into Jack Palvino last Tuesday night at Wegman's on Long Pond Road in Rochester. His new book is "On the Radio...the Palvino years 1957-1997". I had the distinct pleasure of working with Jack during the glory days of WBBF in 1991-92. It was wonderful to see Jack after 38 years. He looks great and he autographed his book for me. Jack certainly was a mentor that could be looked up to. His accomplishments are enormous. And to have spent 40 years in Rochester is a tribute to one heck of a broadcaster! I read the book that night. Super memories. Radio will never be as great as the 1960s-70s. Maybe I'm just getting old, but those were the days.

I'm really interested in getting an autographed copy of Jack's book also. (As a writer, I enjoy getting autographed / personalized books; it's just the idea of that extra connection to the author.)

Does anyone know of any other appearances he will be making?

You could check with Wegman's because they are selling his book and have set up a number of autograph signings. If all else fails, I'm sure if you sent Jack $20 he would autograph a copy and send it to you. His address is 780 Beach Ave., Rocester 14612

Having worked for Jack for the better of 12 years....I must ask if that includes his "percentage"...or does he invoice the balance due? :D ;D

(Disclaimer: I don't know the retail price ???..but I am also interested the book. Is it sold only in the "local" Wegmans?

I have to say that, despite the low pay, my time working for Jack and Bud at WVOR 1980-81, and WBUF 1981-84, was an education on how to turn underperforming stations around and make radio fun and profitable. Jack had his quirks, but my hat's off to the guy. What a career!

On an occasion or two, while working overnights at WVOR in the early ’90s, I received hotline calls from Jack in the early-morning hours. Once I remember asking, “Old habits are hard to break?” (As I recall, he just wanted to ask why we were airing the news at :50 instead of :00. My answer was a simple, “That’s where it’s scheduled” — quickly adding, however, that if he wanted it aired at the top of the hour instead, that’s where I’ll air it.)

What I didn’t let on, but what I’m sure I was thinking at the time, was, “Wow! I just got a call from Jack Palvino!” (He is, after all, the person to whom I grew up listening on WBBF-AM in the ’70s.) Working overnights, my encounters with him were few, but they were always pleasant — including during those rare 5 a.m. phone calls when he was always quite amiable.

Congratulations, Jack — I look forward to reading your book!

For HDBG: I heard a short ad on the Bob Matthews Show (by Jack Palvino himself!) on WHAM that the book was being sold at Wegmans, and that proceeds were going to the Heart of Gold Charity, but it wasn't clear whether this went beyond the local Wegmans.

Thanks umtrr. Guess I'll have to venture into the Wegmans here...and have a look around! It's also good to see that the HOG Charitable Foundation still has legs! Many a Sock Hop was staged to fund it's operation back in the 80's!! Good Times ;D

BG in case you didn't know jack palvino runs the holy family station locally. That's the catholic station on, ironically, 1460 AM!

A client forwarded me a copy of "On The Air" (Jack apparently autographed it to him.) It's a fun and interesting read. ;) "But....."

I was amused to note on page 73 that Jack referred to me as "one his staff members" in the 1960s. Actually, I was PD of WBBF 1975-77, and Jack was the morning guy who also sold. During the period when we were both there Jack was the DJ and I was the PD, not the other way around. Dan Clayton (Ken Wolt) hired me; Jack had nothing to do with it and I never worked "for Jack" at any time in my career.

Entertaining read, though, for any Rochester radio guy!

Maybe Jack's memory is fading with age because that is just one of a several inaccuracies that I've noticed in his book.

But you're right, Bob.  An entertaining read, nonetheless!

Lotsa mirth in these pages, and some of it's even intentional, I'll bet....

Like the claim Smilin' Jack "suggested" to Lanny Frattare during a swim "in Lake Ontario in front of the Palvino" hacienda he might want to take a drive to Pittsburgh and pitch the Bucs play-by-play job. (Can ya say....."apocryphal....?")

WNBF/WENE/WAXC friend Tom Birch would stay in my Penfield town house when he came back to town udring his Storz PD gig in the mid-70s, and I'm sure that somewhere along the line we had "conversations" about how radio ratings sucked. But I don't imagine I had anything to do with the launch of The Birch Report.

Further to my earlier post, I took a closer look at the cover of "On The Air"....and posted on the WBBF mic crane and just over Jack's right shoulder I can clearly see handwritten jock liner cards and promo tags....lettered by yours truly. When I was PD there. Or, in Jack's words..."one of his staff members...." :D ;)

I worked for Jack for 12 years in the Roch market...and about 4 more in Buffalo. Didn't matter what you did...you were always a "staff member" :D

Bygones...but damn I want to get hold of that book!!

I am a Rochester native who got bit by the radio bug in about 69, i made connections at BBF. Anyway now living in Atlanta GA
could any of you give the price on the book.......I gotta have it!

Mike, the book's a paperback with just 96 pages. I think you could probably pick one up for around ten dollars.

The question is where? I don't know if Jack's still selling them through the Rochester Wegman's stores or not. Might be worth a call to one of the stores to find out.

I can’t find it anyplace in the Hylan Drive Wegmans (and the customer service desk was of absolutely no help — not what one normally expects from one of Danny’s places).

Danny probably found out "On The Air" wasn't printed on 100% recycled post-consumer global-warming-proof smoke-free Vegan no-gluten Mayor Bloomberg-approved cruelty-free SPF-30 paba-less Tibet Lives Forever 'COEXIST!!' paper.

Not havin' that in MY frickin' stores. Have a free antibiotic.
