Pamplin Files for 740 Redmond WA CP

I am confused by this. Didn't Pamplin already have a CP for 740 Redmond for 50kW? There has to be more to this story, right?

Think "The Rest of the Story" is buried in the environmental impact statement that is very big.

"THIS AMENDMENT ADDS ONE TOWER AND REARRANGES THE TOWER LAYOUT TO FIT ON THE PROPERTY WITHOUT DISTURBING WETLAND AREAS."

Oh my word! Please tell me this is a joke? Doesn't the AM band sound bad enough already?

This is heavy handed and ludicrous!

Just buy one of the existing AM stations in the area that don't have any listeners already!

I agree. Pamplin could have saved BIG $$$ and one of our underachieving megawatters could be turned into..another...underachieving....megawatter.....

Oh well. But the point is a little blood circulation is better than growing an extra head.

I have an idea! Let's kill 730 Vancouver and 750 Portland, and then Portland listeners can have more interference at night from 740!

They must have spent a bunch on the environmental impact studies.
Some of the towers will be lit and painted right next to the river so next it'll be the NIMBY's turn.

Hope this doesn't get the ELF people all riled up again....on the other hand, maybe THIS pass they will do us a favor and barbecue themselves while backing up in their dozer.

The nulls on this setup are just fantastic.......

Yeah, if it takes you 7 towers to protect everybody, THAT would be some serious "shoe-horning." Kudos to the engineer who figured that one out. And more kudos to anyone who thinks he will get this thing built in the middle of the Snoqualmie valley without all the NIMBYs coming out of the woodwork.

Meanwhile, I drove by the site a few miles west of this where 1250 (night) and 1460 (day-night) have been transmitting for decades (Kirkland's Rose Hill)- and it appears the site is being readied for a 36 house development. Wonder where those towers are going to go? Have a hard time believing that anybody can get any array built today on the Eastside, between human factors and land costs. Can see 1250 go non-directional at lower power for night, I suppose, but I don't see where 1460 could be built and still "serve" it's COL.

BTW, Dr. Bob Pamplin would love to "kill" 750 Portland, don't you think?

BTW, even with the array, doesn't KCBS have a north/south night pattern that would make this station, um, NOT a reality? (Yes I know that the Avalon CA station has/had night authorization, but really.....)

cd

The pattern for KCBS is aimed more toward the south from their tower site near Novato, California, which is why it's so weak this far north, and so strong in Southern California. And probably why they're trying for this frequency in the Seattle area.
I'd sure like to hear KCBS on my car radio in Seattle, however, since I like a ten minute news update at any time of night, and what KOMO does isn't enough for me as my only news option. KNX from Los Angeles is listenable up here, since CFAX Victoria directionalizes away from the south at night. But there's still some other interference under it at night, making it unreliable as a DX signal that's listenable for long. Eager for internet radio in the car.

But back to topic: seven towers in one of the last remaining rural landscapes in the metro area, about as far east as you can go before you're in the mountains, sure sounds like an expensive way to burn a lot of money. Looks like this site is along a bike path that parallels the highway between Carnation and Duval, no? And what's the soil conductivity like up there, versus near the salt water near Puget Sound? Could they come up with a workable and les-espensive option to co-locate at the KKXA site near Snohomish?

It's interesting that a company wants to build an AM station in the Seattle metro area. I wonder what sort of programming would be planned for this station? I'd imagine it's going to have IBOC.

Well, looking at the FCC info, at least the night pattern aims mostly away from my area.

Haven't most AM stations switched off IBOC because of the objectionable buzz or buzz-saw-like noise heard in adjacent channels in crowded urban areas?

Pamplin runs news/talk stations with a heavy right wing/religious slant and religious music stations, a'la Salem.

Interesting observation on the 1250 & 1460 site in Kirkland. I wonder how far along the housing development project is. Yes 1250 has easy options. I wonder if the 740 Pamplin gets built could 1460 do anything from there? If they could that would off sett or make recoverable some of the construction cost. It is interesting that the 740 site is literally east of the shared 1250 & 1460 site. Do Bob and Harold know each other and get along?

And those are short towers...90.1 foot towers, how noticeable will those be, even 7 of them, versus 7, 200 foot towers which I'm sure would work also.
