Re: PCB Radio

Interloper:

Is it true that WTBB coax was zonked the by lightning to reduce it
to 1 kw or was it just heat and humidity that reduced and
wore it out?

Also was the stated GM also the alleged supplier of much of
a "certain" pirate radio stations studio equipment to various
competitors up and down the world's most beautiful beaches?

Where were you in CZ? Some of the most beautiful places I have
seen on Earth there!

And, does anyone yet have the patience to give us an in
the market report on 'PFM (The Late 108?) Seems like no
one is listenin'!

I was going through some of my old tapes of Island 106 and WPFM. Anyone remember these DJ's?

The Gamby Man - Island 106 in the early 90's.

Hollywood - WPFM in the early 90's.

Steve Christian - Island 106 in the early 90's

Randy Rhodes - Island 106 in the early 90's

Lisa Lisa - Island 106 middays in the mid 90's

Little John Walker - Overnights on WPFM in the 80's - early 90's

Hawk and Robbie - Island 106 morning show in the mid 90's

Mr. Lou - Mornings at WPFM in the late 80's / early 90's

Crash Test Oppie - Island 106 in the mid 90's

I also had a break from "Totally Patrick" as well.

Steve Christian has been working in Tallahassee radio now for a number of years, first at the old Z-Rock, then later as part of "Steve and Sara" on Magic 107.1. I believe he;s with Cumulus/Tallahassee now.

Report (?) on The Late 108/PFM

Sorry, not in the market--but visited the station about 6 months ago. At that time they were running (networked) Kidd Kraddick in the morning from Dallas, then voice-tracked CHR/pop. Very predictable, conventional, and--essentially--a non-local carbon of Island 106. Not horrible, by any means, but nothing to write home to mom about. Double O seemed to recognize that they overpaid for the cluster and had gotten hammered by the storms, and were trying to run everything as inexpensively as possible, with the exception of the morning guy on the country FM ("Butch?"). PFM was billing 3rd in the cluster--after Arrow and Cat. Ratings for PFM are about half Island's, so I doubt that's changed much. Can't be that much fun being "the other" CHR in market #240, except, of course, the market is the beach...

Captain Norm now works behind the cashiers window at Americas Cash Express in Edgewater. I was the first guy on the air at Island 106. The "Witch Doctor." Named the station and got the calls from the nuclear submarine "Poseidon."

Thanks for the info. Not to bring up a sore subject Steve ---
but what's your take on the future of Double Goose and specifically
WPFM. I remember when you guys did the Island launch. Hard to
believe, that Island would still be standing
(at 50kw - gotta remember what we all
think is important to radio and not listeners...)
and the mega PFM has faltered since 1986/1987. Thank
you. Sad to here Captain Norm is there. I'll go see
him on April 22/23 when I revisit the world's most
beautiful white sand beaches.

I'm just a long time listener and a former radio fan; this is who all I remember from over the years:

I listened to DLP and 3WQ, but I hardly remember them at all. I moved out of the area and listened to my first FM stations, where the DJ's whispered and played whole sides of vinyl records. I came back to Panama City and PFM had signed on. They were so cool. Every remote they did and all those Hawaiian Tropic Suntan contests were the only place in the world to be. Jim King - was he at PFM or just the AM's? There was Young Preston Young, I always liked him. Jeff Davis, Big Rick and Little John Walker. THE BIRDMAN, who is my favorite among all Panama City DJ's; I missed him when he left. And when he partnered with the talented Mr. Lou, they made one of the best teams PC has ever had on the air. Kelly McCann comes in somewhere along the way here. Mike Stone.

Then Island signs on. So fresh, so hip and I was totally devoted. Norm Tanner would play your 5 requests at 5 o'clock and I loved him for playing songs that were not entirely on their play list. Steve Michaels, Steve Christian, Larry Gordon, Gamby Man, Chazrain Blake.

Then Rock 103. Yay! They played rock and I loved them for that. I liked David Lee alot and his wife Stephanie. They had Gary from the The Corner Store on so much, that Gary might as well have been a DJ. They played Gary Moore and Delbert McClinton among others.

At this time it was probably 88-92 and it was probably the best time in radio that Panama City will ever see: Island was cool, and musically, Rock 103 had it going on. I don't remember PFM at this time; had they been padlocked yet? I don't think they ever came back on my radar after this time period. All their incarnations after that were lame. And someone recently asked what is listener perception for PFM. I think PFM is just a memory now. So someone broadcasts from the frequency 107.9, using the calls PFM and they think they are going to reach who? The Great 108's former listeners? They're old now. Are they trying to reach young demo's who don't remember PFM, or if they do, it was someone else's station, so it will never be their own HOT station? Having "PFM" on the air now posing as the former station is like seeing a 45 year old woman in a mini skirt and too much black eyeliner trying to pass as young and cool; everyone sees right through it, and it's pathetic. I think Island should get credit for being the same station since they signed on and have kept relatively the same format.

Then we started listening to DJR out of Dothan, great music and Kelly McCann found Mr. Lou and they were pretty good together.

And then, there was the OUTRAGEOUS and Irrepressible Pirate Radio. BC, Bubba, Gator.... Bubba was too much, talking trash and taking risks with his Out-There proclamations. Sometimes I felt like BC was just hanging on for dear life while Bubba put their employment on the line. Their music was good, but I was starting to sense the feel of tight playlists.

Then in no particular order and no particular station: Kim Styles, CJ Ryan, Cheryl, with her amazing voice, and Uncle Harley, another great voice. Linda Scott and Steve Micheals. Logan and Lori. Butch, the freshest air talent we've had in this town since Pirate signed on. I can't believe he's off the air right now.

By this time, radio has gone corporate. Study groups tell me I have to hear The Pina Colada Song and Jumping Jack Flash because they "test well." I have to listen to one station to hear one narrow format and another station the next day to get a break from hearing the same 30 or 40 songs played again. It's all corporate and it all sucks. And I hate syndicated shows, which are aired most typically am drive. Nothing says corporation and cookie cutter station like a syndicated morning show. I hate them individually and I hate them on principle. Bob and Tom, Rick and Bubba, Lex and Terry, Kid Kraddick.... Bob and Tom sound like 60 year old men who can't go two words without busting into long, drawn out asthmatic guffaws. Disgusting. "But look at all the money we save on payroll !"

Of course I haven't mentioned 92.5 but I didn't listen to country music back then. But I loved the reassuring voice of the guy who was their morning person for so long, Reed Kinney, maybe. And I didn't mention 98.5 because when they signed on they were so super dorky and super nerdy that I will never be able to overcome that image of them.

I almost forgot my SOUL WITH CC! Saturday mornings with CC, first Soul, then he updated the name and calls it Blues with CC and The Quiet Storm, but the music is the same. How many years have I listened to CC? I'm old now, and I remember listening to him when I was young. His show is now on 93.5 The Beat and I can't get the signal in my house at the beach.

I'm sure there are people who I should remember but couldn't think of them in time to post this.

I fondly remember when radio itself was cool, and each station could be unique, and each DJ played, at least to some extent, his own music choices. I think those days are long over, but to our Panama City FM radio air talent pioneers, I salute you.

Very fascinating reading all this. As I'm writing this, it was just announced that WPFM got sold to EMF. I'm just a long time listener. Never vacationed in PC that much. It was always Destin or P'cola, so my only memory is WPFM. There were the summer nights when the signal boomed into Montgomery. Got in trouble after my parents discovered me calling 234-0000 long distance on the phone bill, but I think it was worth it. Those were the days.

wow...forgot about this thread !

was surprised to see this listed at the top of the list.....cool read it again

"And I didn't mention 98.5 because when they signed on they were so super dorky and super nerdy that I will never be able to overcome that image of them."

I know this is a VERY old thread, but I had to chuckle at this comment. I was one of those "dorky" and "super nerdy" people who signed on WFSY in 1987. And I would hasten to point out, our "dorky" little station kicked the ever-lovin' crap out of every station in the market! We killed Love-FM (a 14 share 12+ before we signed on Sunny, to a 2 share afterward, which brought us the schizophrenic "Island 106"). 'PAP couldn't even beat us with their 30 year heritage and COUNTRY format. So I'll see your "dorky" and raise you a dumbass.

Regards,

Diamondtwo

Personally, I preferred the pre-1987 version of 98.5. I guess that would make me SUPER de-dorky then... :)

PC Beach and radio

Very surprised to see this thread ongoing. Thought I'd take a look and see if there were any comments about PC after Michael. Spent a lot of time in PCB in radio. 'PFM, Island 106, etc. Lotsa the statements are correct, some memories of mine are little blurred regarding ownership changes, etc. Been in New Mexico doing engineering for Cumulus. Yeah, the whole situation coming to the desert was highly unusual, nut has been awesome! Firing up the new Nautel NX-50 transmitter on 770kHz was awesome! Heading back to the beach for Christmas. Maybe see some of you...

PC has been a really tough radio market for a long, long, time. Back in the heyday of AM, just after WDLP moved from 1230 to 590 and WPCF moved from 1400 to 1430, there have been way too many radio stations chasing too few advertising dollars in a market where advertisers might pack up and leave overnight. Being on the coast and in an area of incredibly poor ground conductivity, you could shoehorn a bunch of AM signals in there. Plus you had the AMs from Tampa and New Orleans riding the salt water right onto the beaches in the daytime. I remember listening to 1400 out of Fort Walton Beach on a transistor radio..clear as a bell, while on the beach. 740 WBAM out of Montgomery even came in there really well. Later, FM came along and you not only had everything in PC proper but stations just outside there trying to move close enough to put a signal over the market. Probably the folks up at Crestview who decided to just stay put there with their 100KW signal may have been the smartest radio folks in that part of the world. Florida is surpassed only by Hawaii as historically being the worst state in America to be in the radio business. There are exceptions to that blanket statement but they are far more uncommon in Florida than elsewhere. A buddy of mine always said you want to operate radio stations in places where people make a living not where they go to have fun.
