Thanks Holmes.

Best Spring or any book ever for 97X. Time to continue it to the Fall. I would love to be a fly on the wall across the bridge. m/

yeah, you are right, they bought some books and filled them out themselves !

Why do you say that? As I see it last book CC worked it's butt off and did a better job then Styles....well Styles took on the challenge and did a good job! Who knows it might flip again next time! There are a lot of good sounding radio stations in Panama City of both sides.....why not give credit where credit is due?

Why did Styles change WVVE with numbers like it had as Lite AC??

And, 12+ wise, PFM did better than I would have ever expected.
Island, wow. You rock, girlfriend. What has happened to AC on
the beach? How did FSY trash out. It have never been that bad
since I can remember. Interesting book. BH - look at the X.

From what I have heard about the numbers, they are really strange. My friend that read them off to me over the phone and we think either Arbitron had a really low rate of returned, completed (usable) diaries (aka in tab) or there is something really strange going on. One example is there is NO ONE listening to classic rock/rock on either Arrow or 94.5 on the weekends...that is really hard to believe.....not every one who is a "rocker" listens to 97X. She is supposed to fax them to me tonight so I can look at them tomorrow for myself. I cannot see how that joke of a morning show on WYOO could pull the numbers it did.

WVVE had a great book in fall 2004 for two reasons. First off, WASJ was basically off the air because of damage during the hurricane. Secondly, the numbers were all 55+ (most of it over 65).

Remember, no one buys or sells 12+. WVVE was up 25-54 - and went from being six shares behind WFSY in the demo to two shares behind, so it closed the gap in a MAJOR way. Should never look at 12+ - it can be hazardous to your health.

Radioresearcher:

Is the close race with Sunny based mainly on the current format's
numbers? I haven't been in PCB much in three years and if I recall
the WVVE signal is pretty small. If they had that good of a showing
against the 100kw Sunny, it's even more impressive. What are they
doing right? What artists do they focus on? Can you give us more
info on the "real" numbers (25-54?) Totally agree about the 12+
numbers, usually I can get the more important numbers, but I
haven't seen then yet for PC. You can sort of ballpark things
based on what you know about the market, stations and 12+ numbers,
but WVVE's music shift just seemed to make no sense. Now it does.
Thanks for what you stated above. Good info.

I know Tom and Kim (at Styles) took some heat on this board (last
year, mainly) for various issues, but they seem to have things
on a good track? Is that they way you see it?

Who do you see as the real gainers and losers from this book?

WVVE had a lot of Neil Diamond, John Denver, Streisand, Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, et al. Great for a 55+ audience - but just not able to compete 25-54.

It's evolved to a Rock AC - probably the closest thing out there would be WMMO/Orlando. 70's and 80's pop/rock music. Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, U2, etc. Very music intensive. Won't be able to give it a fair judgment until the next book. Keep in mind, that near 9 share 12+ was a complete fluke. WVVE has a good signal - it has great building penetration and covers the metro just as good as WFSY.

Right now, the market is extremely competitive. The quality of radio in PC is very strong. However, the Styles Media cluster has the largest group of local, live dayparts. WILN and WYYX are the only two stations with live jocks at night.
For WYOO, it brought in a new morning show.

WRBA still performs well for Double O 25-54.

The CC stations (WPAP and WFSY) have great heritage. I have no doubt they will bounce back as they have great brands. For Double O, considering how well Island did, WPFM did well too.

Remember, Styles Media is based in PC. CC is corporate, and the lead person for Double O is based out of Birmingham. If you look at any broadcaster, they are likely to perform well in their home base as they have a name in the community.

WILN had undergone some changes last fall with a new PD - but now it's stabilized.

WVVE has a great signal since they increased power and installed a new antenna. With their tower location being closer to the metro, they actually have a stronger signal in most of Panama City than WFSY, whose tower is over 25 miles from the city. BUT, WFSY is regional station, I have heard them running commercials for businesses in Marianna and other area cities. WVVE is strictly a "local" signal in that regard

Re: Panama City & Merry Christmas!

Congrats to Styles Media. CC will say PAP is still # 1 since they are "tied", but it is nice to see someone up there besides PAP on the top. I actually think part of PAP's problem is Shane. He is like the HHH of RAW. People are tired of him and a media absence would do some good for everyone.

As for WAVE, some of the problem is they do not seem to know what format they are. The other day I heard "Carry On Wayward Son" followed by "Promises, Promises" by Naked Eyes. No one wants to hear a train-wreck like that.

Surprised WASJ went up considering they are only playing in the left channel. I read another post where they are still playing CHRISTMAS liners and I happened to hear one the other day. They also direct people to their website which doesn't exist anymore! And the weekend liners play during the week. So Merry Christmas, Happy Weekend and click here to see nothing! It is obvious that no one in management pays attention to that station.

Talk Radio's morning show is abyssmal but I guess talk fans do not really have another choice. Doc was DOC but these guys seem like they are trying to get things stirred up and that makes it un-interesting.

I am starting to like PFM's morning show but there is too much dead air. Obviously there is no one there in the morning. Same with WRBA. Too much dead air on the morning show or breaks are over-filled and the commercials are playing over John Boy & Billy.

There is no "secret" to Styles this book. I think it has to do with the fact they are live most of the time (although hearing Yoda on Wave for 12 hours is not fooling anyone).

WAKT needs more live jocks. They do not sound live simply because the music overpowers the jock and you cannot hear what the jock is saying. Morning show lacks direction and has little substance. One guy cannot do it by himself and it sounds as if there is little or no show-prep. At one time it sounded like it was really headed somewhere near the end of the MXP era with 4 people on the show.

I have always enjoyed Logan's morning show. It has always been pretty solid and he seems well prepared. Sunny does play a good mix of music but not my cup of tea. 93.5 will bounce back when some of the books hit their "placement". 94.5 simply sounds too much like the old Pirate to make any kind of bounce.

Island is definitely on top of things. The ball is in their court to continue a good job. Let's see if they can pull a 12 next book.

Well, back to lurk mode and have a very Merry Christmas, even in August! Sheesh!

97X & Island

Nice increase for 97X--yeah, I think it is their best showing in history. On the other hand, when any station (WILN) zooms to the top by more than doubling its share without making any dramatic change, it more likely falls into the "statistical abberation" category. Tweaking the rotations doesn't produce the kind of jump Island got. So to their crew, I'd say "Congratulations. Nice job. Keep up the good work. But don't be devastated if you don't repeat. And buy some lottery tickets on your way home--the gods are smiling on you!"

Re: Panama City & Merry Christmas!

Appreciate the observations, but can't agree that the report reflects reality. Too flukey--too many dramatic ups and downs. Yes, that's the nature of very small markets with very small in-tab, but still...

No, Island isn't likely to pull a 12 next time, nor is it fair to their crew to lay that kind of expectation on them. Yes, they sound better--but not 120 percent better.

Styles does obviously have their act together. Double O is obviously trying to do too much with too few humans. And CC obviously got caught with their pants down... maybe feeling a bit too fat & sassy. This should get their attention.

no changes on Island? In the last year they have changed evrything except the name. Every member of the airstaff is new, a new PD, more urban records, new jingles...like I said the only thing that didn't change in the last 10 months is the name. Not to mention they did, market Isalnd this past book. I agree 11.1 might be a bit high, but I am not surprised to see a big jump up.

Re: 97X & Island

By dramatic, I mean... uh, Country to Urban. As you say, the 11 is a stretch. A 7 or 8 (an increase in line with 97X--a couple of shares) falls more in the range of statistical probability. I have strong ties to Island and am happy as hell to see 'em on top, but it's kind of like having your 14-year old kid shoot back-to-back aces at Augusta National--after you high-five him, you've gotta say "Hey, son, life ain't usually this easy. Don't be shocked if you go another 60 years without one." Island sounds sharp--but not so much sharper than the rest of their direct & indirect competition to double 'em in six months. Sorry, but it ain't realistic. Been looking at numbers too long to bet my house on another eleven. If they take that as a challenge and work their asses off to prove me wrong, that'll be great!

Re: 97X & Island

Thank you very much. Yeah it has been the best book we have ever had. It feels good, I cant wait to see the breakdowns. Should be great.

We will keep working hard. Thank you
