Part-Time Work

I am looking for part-time or full-time work in radio and hoped someone here could steer me in the right direction. I've worked in radio doing promotions, web development, on-air work, management, and production. An aircheck and resume are available if anyone can help. Thanks.

Freddy

I'm sure you can land a part time position somewhere within the CC/Cox cluster.

They aren't the easiest people to get in touch with :-\

If you can't reach them, go on their station's web sites and look for info about remote broadcasts that are coming up. Go out to couple of these, introuduce yourself and say you want to work at their station. A lot of times, station managers, or other big figures come out to these broadcasts. Meet them, be professional, and dont lie about your experience! They like people they can trust. If you wanna get in, you gotta show it. But dont be annoying, if they say no, then no. Also, make sure you hear from someone higher up the ladder and not someone working in promotions. They will say no because you are a possible competitior for their position.

CC in Miramar is on an annual basis looking for more board-ops, and promotions people.

Along with the introducing at remotes, check allaccess.com. They often have part-time board op/weekend stuff on there.

Hey man....just out of curiousity.... I see you on the Georgia Board (on Savannah topics....where I am employed) and on the Ft.Lauderdale board (which is where I am from.) What is your connection with the two areas?? Just curious...since they are my two areas I keep up with..... and will not hold it against you if you do not want to comment!!

True that CC Miramar ususally has a bunch of job postings on any given day. Check this site www.clearcareers.com. You can do a search for jobs in a given market, the name and address of the person taking applications is also posted. Good luck!

Does anyone here WORK for a radio station and know they're hiring?

No, no problem...

To sum it up, I grew up in Virginia, moved to Ft. Lauderdale when I was 13, moved back to VA at 16, graduated college, did some weekend radio work in Brunswick while living in Savannah tending bar, and about four years ago my grandmother's condo in Dania was willed to me...I have s-l-o-w-l-y been renovating it during my vacation time.

Now, I live in SW Orange County, do weekend radio work in Brevard Co., and work for a hotel catering group here during the weekday. I want to move back to Savannah once I get the condo sold (prob. next year)

I don't work in South Florida radio. Probably 95+% of the people on here don't...the big reason because hundreds (myself included for awhile) of jocks go "Dude, I want to move to Miami!". High level of demand, low supply...just looking for PT work before making a move to a city is tough...unless brokered AM is your cup of tea.

As for me, you can count me out of wanting to be in South Florida radio. The South Florida of 2007 is totally different than the South Florida of 10 years ago. Back then insurance/taxes were fairly cheap, crime was low in Broward Co., and you could get a nice small house/condo for $150,000. Today, you can't get much of anything outside of Liberty City for under $300,000. Hell, I spend around $250/month in association fees for a 30 year old condo!!!!

For anybody to get into PT radio here or anywhere else (and I kinda know, I've PT'd for awhile now) unless you know somebody, just play the waiting game and don't quit the day job ;D

I see....... You are right, today's South Florida is WAAAAYYYY different then 10-12 years ago!! I was born and raised down there (Broward General Hospital.)
Moved to Savannah when I was 16..... Did radio for a few years here after graduating high school.... then moved back to Ft.Lauderdale. I applied for a few part time gigs down there.... never really heard anything from anyone, except one station that wanted to pay me $5.95 an hour.... I laughed and kindly declined!! Came back to take a radio gig here in Savannah, and been loving it every since!! Good luck on the condo...my grandparents just sold theirs , and the price they sold it for is crazy considering how small and old it is!! They can buy 2 bigger condos here for what they are getting for their smaller, older one down there!!! See you on River Street.........

If you held the jobs you say you did, you might want to contact Metronetworks Miami. They are looking for writers and on-air traffic reporters. Not your ideal job? In this economy, it's a job. 305-621-6387

Are you responding to me or someone else? I love when things get off topic and all the responses just run together.

He was talking to you. Of course, working traffic can be unrewarding...but it is a job.

And if you feel up to it, look at Palm Beach stations...easier to get a gig there and you could take the Tri-Rail up!

Since someone brought it up about Broward County, I may be
moving down there for some TV/radio work...I've found some
decent condo rental deals, but in terms of "good and bad"
in terms of safety, where should I look, and where should
I avoid? Thanks...

Well, since we're on the topic ;)...I have felt (not because my condo is there) that Dania Beach is Broward's best kept secret. And you gotta go to the Jai-Alai, Pirate's Inn bar, John U. Lloyd Park, and to Jaxson's Ice Cream!

Wilton Manors is a pretty good semi-cheap place...

Hollywood and Hallandale (east of 95) are good fairly cheap bets.

I dunno, I've just always been partial to housing near the coast. You get out to the Pines, Sunrise, Weston, etc. the ocean breeze is almost nil and the heat is horrible.

hmm...places to avoid? I tend to not go through shady areas, but some places in Pompano, Hollywood, Oakland Park, and Ft. Lauderdale can be sketchy. As a general rule, some of the stuff between the turnpike and 95 are industrial and run-down. Lots of suburbs to the west, and to the east stuff is upkept pretty well. As I said, the area changed so much in just ten years...I lived in a $400/month duplex next to a burned-out meth lab in 1997, now its all nice $250k+ condos...and vice-versa!

Good luck with Broward County. Given the choice between Dade and Broward, it's a much safer and cheaper (generally) place to live. But be prepared for high taxes, fascist code enforcement, and bad traffic and drivers!

Other than that, it's a beautiful place to live, and the radio scene there is probably the coolest on the east coast!

I find that the Sun Coast and the Orlando/Jax areas are more affordable.... ;D

Part-time radio work will NOT pay the bills. South Florida radio ahd living has has changed. The average one bedroom apartment in the greater Fort Lauderdale area is $895 and two bedrooms for around $1995 a month. This would include first, last, and security. The general rule is you must make three times your rent payment to qualify for a rental in a good neighborhood. In general part-timers make around 7-8 dollars an hour if you have experience then maybe 9 dollars an hour. The average full-time radio personality makes between 30-40 thousand a year. In this day in age you must make around $60k per year to live comfortably. All the prices have just went up in the past month right in time for Hurricane season which starts June 1st. Example I am renting a condo in Middle River terrace 1 bedroom with 900 square feet in a 27 year old building. My rent just went up from $750 to $895 and the landlord complains that his insurance and taxes have trippled so since I am out of radio have have no ties here I have chosen to leave the area again. South Florida is VERY expensive to live and work in. Even retail jobs pay low. The average part-timer outside broadcasting makes between $6.50-7.50 an hour. I am a South Florida native and have never in my adult life seen these kind of prices just to live here. The average morgage payment is $1600-2000 a month so once again you must make 60-80k per year to even get approved and don't forget about your credit score. Part-time radio pays very low down here you may want to consider North of Palm Beach County.

[quote) Of course, working traffic can be unrewarding...but it is a job.

I did traffic from 1988-1997 both here and in the Carolinas and I never made a difference at all. I will always miss the mic but teaching is much more re-warding. To the person looking for work! Try teaching: Pine Crest pays $100 per day for substitute teaching and pays in the low to mid 40's for full-time. If you want to teach in Public School they make more than radio people do and it's a county government job with state retirement. Some you should think about.

Wow... I never would have guessed that part time radio doesn't pay the bills. I found that out years ago when I started in this business. It's expensive to live down here? Another piece of information that I didn't know. Thank you Sheldon94 for those pearls of wisdom. :p What is this FM I keep hearing about? Is the end of AM radio near? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! And has anyone seen this picture box they call a television? How do they fit the people inside?
