But I'm not the only one hearing a little more hip-hop or Top 40 original edits, and to be honest, it does get a little bit ugly from my end since I recieve Now, Wired (at times), Z, KTU, and Hit 106. But it's common that we warn them of what to do and yet (terrestrial) is still stubborn and eventually learn from their mistakes. Once the numbers for the January book come and if WNYZ is the same or if lower than what it is now, then "Party 87.7" has to be unleashed.
And I would wholeheartedly have to agree with that.
In the beginnings, there was a lot of anger regarding hip-hop on PartyFM, with the angst thinking that Party BOUGHT Pulse (which it didn't), amongst other thoughts. I was telling everyone to give things a chance and it appeared as if things were leaning towards dance. Yet the hip-hop spins seemed to have increased, therefore causing more anger about things. I'm hearing it often enough from the dance music fans. At first, maybe it could have been brushed off as being "spoiled" by Pulse. But the reality is, after these past couple of weeks, there has
ALWAYS been that bitterness with hip-hop from the dance music side, and that goes back to when Hot 97 flipped format, early in 1992, from dance to hip-hop with other stations in other cities following suit (Power 106/LA, Kix 106/Providence, RI, to name a few).
Yes, I realize radio IS a business first and foremost and I DID acknowledge that Hot 97 did the RIGHT thing by changing format in order to get Emmis out of bankruptcy. And I DO realize why Party has hip-hop on the format. Which made me think (and Sam brought this up on Pulse not ALWAYS playing dance)....would the anger still be strong if it was Beyonce, Sean Kingston and Rihanna on the playlist instead of Jay-Z, Lil' Wayne, Young Jeezy, etc.? And yes, it does get back to radio being a business since Party FM also doubles up as a rhythmic reporter. Would the anger be as harsh?
I can't help to think back to the beginnings of 'KTU on 103.5 back in 1996. Back then my anger was the fact that a lot more current, edgier dance could have been played there instead of the huge run of disco and classic freestyle (it was a 75/25 lean favoring the older material). I've expressed it on the other boards, in the VERY early days of Radio-info and a lot of core dance fans felt the same way. It wasn't uncommon to see a "KTU Sucks" post here and there, based on going with Gloria Gaynor for the 1,523,565th time versus throwing in something new by the Outhere Brothers. I never started any of those posts but my anger was based on the fact that current based, edgier dance could work on its own (which was the case when I took my trips to Toronto to hear Energy 108 and Hot 103) and that if radio just tried it, they could achieve maximum results, especially in a city like New York.
In the case of Party being so close to NYC, people that WOULD take trips out to Long Island or Southern Connecticut 6 years ago or so would remember solely hearing cutting edge dance music, with Andre Ferro on the helm as the PD and the
ONLY on-air personality in the afternoons. Even when Andre was out, there was still a good amount of dance music happening there. Once Pulse came in, people in NYC didn't really think about Party as much but people basically remembered and regarded it as a dance station. So when the Party brand of music came in on 87.7, for those not following as close as we do here, it became a shock with the hip-hop since yes, you can hear it in other places and the music that WAS on Pulse was unique to NYC radio as a whole. Even 'KTU didn't jump on some of the Pulse tracks until much later.
I DO know the anger and feel for the fans of dance music in that sense. And for me, I'm just really hoping on "The Big Picture". That's why I've been "hands off" on making comments regarding Party. And unlike the 'KTU bashings, I have learned based on experience plus running the coalition as long as I have that if anything is going to get accomplished somehow, it has to take constructive criticism along with "helping and guiding" matters instead of bashing, doing "disses" on staffers, etc.
I'm still keeping as confident as I can regarding Party. But at the same time, if the cumes/ratings remain the same come next book then something has to give because, for one, while I want radio to succeed as much as they can with dance music even if not on a full-time leaning basis, I also have to look out for my "brothers and sisters" in the dance music community that believe in dance music and its potential, as I do.
In that sense, lets continue working together with things for the best, yet at the same time realize that the dissatisfaction rate has been rising. I'm just keeping it real in that regards.
