Patrick Callahan oldies 103.3

It may not be the "Billboard" countdowns, I thought it was, but I'm really not 100% sure. All I know is there are a lot of songs they don't normally play.

I understand that the Top 20 was based on Boston countdowns, fudged a little to omit any songs that really clashed with the format.

I'm also sorry to hear about Patrick -- I worked with him for awhile, and he was a good guy. I'm sure he'll land on his feet somewhere great.

The "original" Oldies 103 started as a clone of WCBS-FM New York.

They should just do it again and clone the CURRENT CBS-FM 60s,70s 80s and a sprinkle of 50s .

Sorry Boston Bill but I must disagree with you.

JJ is a professional and from what I am told is one of the nicest guys in the business, he is the only PROFESSIONAL radio person on this board who use their real name when posting. Ya I know others have let their secret identity out, such as Joe McM, and there are others who we know who they are but keep it quiet.

Bounce around? Hello this is Radio! You have a permanent reservation at U-Haul, you never buy a house, you never unpack everything before you are off to a new station, new city, new state. That's if you are even lucky enough to stay in the business.. Clear Channel, Citadel, Entercom, you name it they are slashing like a B movie horror flick. Voice tracking, Frank, Mike, Jack, syndication, off the bird... If you are working you gotta be doing something right.

FIVE stations in a career that spans 4 decades....probably close to 35 years in the business, 20 years with KISS-108, now with CBS doing nights and imaging for WBZ. I'd take that career in a heartbeat.

Different strokes I guess. He just isnt my cup of tea and I didnt like the way he handled the Countdown this week. Nothing personal if JJ is reading this.

Oops, sorry about that screw up while posting.

I hadn't heard Oldies 103.3 since the new PD took over and I will say that I'm disappointed. there's a jingle package on the air that is quite old and lacks any of the glitter of the old package. The old ID where they would shout "Boston!" was just great and had such energy.

I have to strongly disagree here. The jingles they're running now are perfect for a 60-70s oldies/classic hits station. They've very catchy and have the classic sound of JAM with a hint of PAMS. The jingles they had before sounded too hip for the room, and were lacking in the melody department.

I do agree that they should take after CBS-FM and add some more 80s while also throwing in the occasional pre-64 cut. And it's too bad that there's no DJ in the overnights - even voicetracking would be an improvement.

A post on the New York board about Harry Bud Nelson pulling a shift out there made me realize I haven't heard Harry in the last week or two since the cuts. He had been pulling Sat shifts. I wasn't listening yesterday so I don't know if he was on. The last time I heard him was a couple of weeks ago...the weekend following Jess Cain's death. Since then, it's been Judy Pancoast and Mike O'Reilly on Saturday mornings/afternoons leading into Mike Osborne.

By the way, Jay Gordon's pic has been put back on WODS's bio page. It got dumped a couple of weeks ago at the same time as Patrick Callahan's and Norm Thibeault's pics.

So does that mean that the DJs and their family members just rent and move around at the mercy of their jobs? Do they usually suppliment their incomes with another job? This is terrible! The most sickening thing about listening to Oldies 103.3 is that the DJs are just plain boring who just scream, "oldies 103.3" in between songs...... there is really no personallity involved......

Did you guys also note that the other DJs have their new pics up and Patrick Callahan's pic were never updated and mysteriously removed and JJ was slowly replacing him (JJ would initially say, "on the air for Patrick Callahan" and this was eventually dropped)...... I guess the station must have planned this way ahead!

That's okay my friend, my therapist will help me through it. :-\

Have you considered trying a cup of Chai tea?

What would YOU like in the countdown?

Thanks for posting JJ. No offense but I felt that Patrick had a certain flair for the countdown and I just don't get that listening to you last week. I know that particular segment must take a lot of research to get done. Congrats on the new gig. Not jumping ship yet. You guys are still better than Magic 106.7 :)

The Thursday night countdown on 103.3FM is from Billboard Magazine. What they do is juxtapose a few positions, probably so they don't get sued from Billboard(since they're not given any credit). Also, they omit a few songs in Billboard's Top 20 that week that are either too hard rock(Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple ,e.g.) or too country (John Denver or Freddy Fender,e.g) or too soul(like many of James Brown's lesser hits,e.g).Then they would add 'oldies' artists like Carole King or Paul Simon,e.g who fit their tight little playlist-mold who were just outside the Top 20(or Top 30) and include them in their Top 20 to make up for the songs they deleted from Billboard.I think Patrick was opening up the playlist more to include songs from the '70's that 103.3FM should play on a daily basis but don't.Instead, much like WZLX does with it's 'classic' hits,'Oldies 103.3 plays the same 100 songs and never dare to venture from this core 100.That's what made the Thursday Night Countdown special. It did play a lot of great hits(especially obscure 1 hit wonders) that are simply not played at any other time on their station and are lost in this segmented spineless era of radio. You have the best decade of music in history(the Seventies). And yet they choose to ignore the majority of Top 40 hits from that decade. Oldies 103.3 FM in Boston should study 101.5 FM in Rhode Island .They play the Beatles &Stones and a few other great sixties songs, but they focus on the '70's and early 80's songs that 'Oldies' would never play. Except for Patrick and his Thursday Night Countdown.....Now he's gone.Let's see what J.J.Wright & Company do with it now.It seems like he's trying, but the jury is still out.

Sorry, but I don't agree with referencing 101.5's playlist for 103.3. The Providence list is just as restrictive, only with a slightly different set of songs. Plus, "oldies' in Providence is so NON-local, it makes any radio-lover cringe to listen. A live morning show, and then voice-tracking for the other 20 hours a day ? Yikes. At least Oldies in Boston is live & local everywhere but overnights. It was different 7-8 years ago when 101 had a much more expansive playlist, several unique (LOCAL) specialty shows and All-Request Saturday Night (which appeared to have no restriction whatsoever). Sadly, today..all corporate-owned oldies stations seem to subscribe to the "less is more" philosophy...ie, "less" playlist and "more" repetition. I know I'm not alone when I say I'd love to hear more of the tunes (which were BIG hits in their day) that have disappeared thanks to the suits and the know-it-all consultants.

At work we've jumped back to WROR. I'm warming up to Paul Perry and Ive always liked Kim Collins.

Now we can't let the underdog beat Oldies 103.3! Speaking of Oldies, what are the chances of addding more 80's tunes to the roster?

HI JJ, I do not know if you are still following this thread, however I heard the rebroadcast of The Top 20 Countdown this morning and you were great! :)
