Paul Harvey Dies

I asked this on the Chicago board and couldn't get an answer: When was the date of Paul Harvey's actual last broadcast? I'll admit I don't get to listen every day, but I thought I had heard him on the air some time in February before he died.

A local host said it was February 16th. It was the broadcast where he is discussing baseball and the "steroid era" as his "for what its worth" piece at the close of the broadcast. I'm not sure if this is still accessible or not online. Here is one link to a discussion:

I sent an email to an ABC rep about streaming the current "News and Comment" with Gil Gross. The playoff games are playing havoc with our local broadcasts with pre-emptions.

Years ago I had the misfortune to work for one of the biggest idiots in small market radio, Chester Davis. However, while there, I was introduced to Paul Harvey as the station carried his 7:30am newscast and his mid-day newscast. He was a class act and there will never be one like him in our lifetimes. I read where he had some health problems in the last years of his life, possibly brought on by the loss of his beloved wife, Angel.

Could this Chester be the one that always had egg on his tie? Didn't trust anyone and made you work in house shoes? If it was, I can feel your pain.

Yep, Buddy. The same Chester Davis!!! You were lucky enough to escape before I was.

That would not surprise me, as very often men who are up in age have a great deal of difficulty coping with the loss of their wives; conversely, women grieve and mourn and manage for a little bit longer. Not sure why that is, but when he lost Angel my first thought was that Paul Harvey was not long for this world either. I did not say it, but at his age it was kind of inevitable. I've seen it more than once. If they hold on for longer than two or three years they'll probably be okay and able to gradually work through the feeling of disorientation.

" ditto on the above..he also drove a four year old car at the time with the window sticker still on the rear glass..and buddy..he fell asleep in front of a business i worked for at the time while waiting for the owner to arrive to try to sell him ads...he was still snoozing when we all left for the day..i was hired by the big CD..but that night Buntin called and hired Jack Williams and I at WHIN..so I never got to wear the house shoes...

Now I don’t mean to speak ill of the dead, but I remember Chester Davis bugged the living heck out of me on the phone from time to time. He would call the front desk and ask for the engineer. Usually revolved around some "small" problem or at least he said it was. Only once did I go out there and it was funny as it ended up….  Couldn’t get the ON-AIR light to come on when the mic was switch was thrown and he could NOT find out what it was to save himself. Finally, I relented and went all the way out there.  Laboriously went through the board part-by-part, all the switches and relays worked fine. Turns out he had cheeped out and tried to stick the wrong size bulb in the fixture. Wound up spending more time convincing him of that fact than it took to drive out there.  I think he assumed room temperature before I could send a bill, at least the phone calls stopped.

On topic, had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Harvey a few years back in his studio in Cgo. Seemed truly miffed at loosing WSM as one of his affiliates. Made me feel welcomed and enjoyed the conversation. Seemed like I had known him forever, on reflection I had...

Is Chester Davis a real person? I can't imagine! An unfortunate name like Chester Davis and obnoxious as Ted Baxter to boot. :)o)

Chester Davis WAS a real person. He assumed room temperature years ago. When I worked for the idiot in 1971, he was 67 yrs old. The stories I could tell about that dumb a**!

Ted Baxter was a consumate professional compared to Chester Davis...his station very closely resembled WEAK of "Lester Roadhog Moran" fame..only worse

Why on earth would Chester be concerned about the on-air light when he would walk right in the control room when the light was on and start talking to whoever was on the air?? When I worked for him the on-air light didnt mean a damn thing to him.

Chester would grip at me because I was always opening the windows and smoking. Smoking was a no-no.
If you heard this before skip down,...but we signed on after playing like we were on the air for two weeks in August 1966. We had one commercial. Not per break, not per hour...but one commercial during morning drive. I think it was the old City Cafe. One morning Chester called and wanted to know if the station was on the air. It was, as far as I could tell. He asked what the meters said and I could tell him because he and the engineer wouldn't let me know. i went out front to my car and could hear it and told him so. He resonded he knew what it was and would be there in a minute. It seemed he had been playing disc jockey the night before with the 'dummy load' in. Once he got it out.....I called the cafe and repeated the commercial.
My hours....sign on til sign off, Mon-Fri. with an hour off for breakfast, for lunch and for dinner. Football on Fri night and half a day Sat.
