What I'd understood is that because he had time left on his contract at 103.3 when CBS got the opportunity to hire Dale Dorman, so they sent him to do mornings in Chicago at WJMK "Oldies 104.3". When WJMK became "104.3 Jack FM" in 2005, he was moved over to WJMK's HD2 channel for a few months, but he left before CBS pulled the plug on the live midday, afternoon, and evening jocks last summer. I seem to recall that he is from Providence originally, so it's not a surprise to see him back in these parts.

I never thought he was that outstanding...but does anyone know how his adult numbers were when he was on Oldies. Did he have better numbers than Dale has now?

Numbers remained about the same, with just a slight uptick with Dorman.

Perry is a good talent... but Dale is a Boston legend. Thereby a much better "sell" for the CBS sales department. So regardless of numbers, I think Dorman was the right choice.

Wow, this quickly became a slam thread! I don't think the intention was to debate Paul Perry's ratings vs. Dorman's. Can anyone just say something nice?

Welcome Back to Uncle Pauly!!! a very nice guy and a hard-working radio pro. he may have spent a great deal of time in Providence, but he's got more than a few reels of airchecks from WHDH & WBZ as well as Oldies.

Yes, welcome back to Boston radio Paul. Good to see that you didn't give up on the business like so many others. A gig is a gig, no matter how big or small. GM is a good company.

Paul realy is a nice guy. Kudos to him.

lets talk about what this means for WROR's format and Lauren and Wally.
Where would Paul move to, drive time? Or is he just working for a friend until he get's a full time gig somwehere else? I knew a guy who came back to his old station in San Diego and in a couple of weekends, voice tracked 4 hours of shows, one hour ran each day, until he got another morning show somewehre else.

If Paul comes on, will WROR lean more Oldies-ish (jingles, etc), instead of the more Classic Rock like formatic?

Or could they put Paul on in Mornings and move L&W and take them off entirely?
What do you think?

L & W are here to stay! ROR is L & W. If they go away so does the station.

It's more that the 105.7 Framingham allocation is Loren & Wally. Hell, Greater Media could put smooth jazz on 105.7... but it would be with Loren & Wally in the morning, of course.

They only have one year left on their contract. Perry provides a good insurance policy in case L&W go somewhere else which they almost did not too long ago.

Not so much. Although I hear they may not resign, Paul Perry is no substitute for Loren and Wally. No slight to Paul Perry but they are an institution not even a very good one but they have such incredible longevity and are entrenched at that frequency.

Loren and Wally won't go anywhere if Greater Media and WROR can help it. They're the ratings and cash cow of the station. If they do give Perry a full-time slot, it won't be mornings. Maybe afternoon drive or evenings.

WROR is already leaning much more Oldies than Classic Rock music-wise. Their playlist is very similar to WODS, with a little less disco and mid-60's pop, a little heavier on crossover late 60's/70's Classic Rock pop hit singles (but no lengthy or deep album cuts or harder rock that WZLX may play), and also a little 80's AC added. They won't go with jingles, though. That's one way that they're distinguishing themselves from WODS. They're going for the audience who wants the Oldies without the retro formatting elements. There are a lot of recorded voiced liners, but no jingles. They actually have some promos spoofing WODS and their jingles to put them down.

I had heard only one break so I don't even know if he was live or voicetracked from out of town.Depending on where he lives it could even be worth his while to commute to Boston just for a weekender or he could have moved back to this area.Unless he's doing something out of radio besides this a move back to the greater Boston or Providence area wouldn't be feasible unless he has something lined up in radio and the weekender is temporary. The way things are going in Providence I'd doubt anything will open up for anyone.

Let's be honest. Paul's morning show was pretty bland. It was as milktoast as you could get!

nhradio101...

Maybe you should take your comment one step forward? There are A LOT OF MORNING SHOWS that are pretty bland right now?

When I worked with Paul (several years ago), I always thought he was a better mid-day personality? He definitely has a good set of pipes, but I found his show content more suitable for listeners who had arrived at work by 10AM or might be travelling on the road during the middle of the day? ???

Knowing that the morning and afternoon drive audiences can "change radio stations" in a mini-second if the jock jokes are bad or if the song that's playing isn't appealing---Paul MIGHT have a greater following in a later time slot?

I still think the man is very talented. :)

You're right but given where he was (WODS) and who was programminig it at the time (known for programming very conservatively) you shouldn't have expected anything edgy. Oldies was supposed to be pretty milktoast family friendly. By the way you dont think Loren and Wally are milktoast?. They're upper demo shows. That is what they tend to be. Milktoast.
