Pay For Play

So, WLAN did a "Labor day Pay for Play" today... listeners called in and exchnge for a huricane katrina donation, got any song they wanted played on the air. I caught a couple minutes of it here and there and really enjoyed the variety. Though, I didn't really need to hear Eiffel 65... that song was bad enough when it was new.

My question is, could a station get away with doing that all the time? Obviously, not collecting money, but rather more of a jack format. I know there's been plenty of discussion of it on the board, and i know it has had at best mixed success in other markets- however there are still plenty 'o stations around the country that do it. My personal feeling is the format would work well first, but would the novelty wear off after a while? There's only so many oddball songs you can dig out of the vault before they come stale. Anyone else catch it or have thoughts?

For $50 I'll give you 60 seconds of air time...complete with invoice and affidavit of airplay. In fact, buy in bulk and I'll give you a discount.<P ID="signature">______________

I've been meaning to post about this since yesterday...am I correct in assuming that CC stations all over the country did the "Pay for Play"? If so, great move on CC's part in helping out.

The variety was great, I actually listened most of the day while working on a project inside. Bohemian Rhapsody, Louis Armstrong, Led Zep, The Simpsons(!). Good stuff.

Actually I've been listening to LAN a lot lately - they just have a great handle on what they want the station to sound like and their playlist is just broad enough to make it listenable for more than a couple minutes at a time. But I'm a picky radio listener.
