So, WLAN did a "Labor day Pay for Play" today... listeners called in and exchnge for a huricane katrina donation, got any song they wanted played on the air. I caught a couple minutes of it here and there and really enjoyed the variety. Though, I didn't really need to hear Eiffel 65... that song was bad enough when it was new.
My question is, could a station get away with doing that all the time? Obviously, not collecting money, but rather more of a jack format. I know there's been plenty of discussion of it on the board, and i know it has had at best mixed success in other markets- however there are still plenty 'o stations around the country that do it. My personal feeling is the format would work well first, but would the novelty wear off after a while? There's only so many oddball songs you can dig out of the vault before they come stale. Anyone else catch it or have thoughts?
