PBS

I can't speak about WNET from New York, but I do get both NJN and WHYY on my cable system. I tend to watch WHYY more often, because of their Delaware newscast at 5:30pm, also Nova, Nature, Jim Leiher Newshour, and other PBS shows I like are on WHYY. I've watched an occasional show on NJN, usually during their pledge time if that show hasn't already been on WHYY.

WHYY is awful. Ed Cunningham, Patrick Stoner and the rest of the pledge drive people seem like these elite Main Line rich folk who run the PBS station as a hobby which you should support because they are doing you this incredible favor of giving you such a wonderful PBS station.

I find myself watching WLVT they are a more realistic station and seem to air stuff in pattern unlike WHYY. Plus they seem not to be run by a bunch of eliteist [EDIT].

Isn't NJN considered a second tier PBS station anyway?
Given the choice between WHYY and WNET, I think I would go with WNET, since they produce some incredible shows while WHYY produces crap.

[EDIT-inflammatory.]

I also watch WLVT 39 over WHYY 12...on the cable system I have 39's color and sound are better than 12's........plus I love voice of the woman who does the ch. 39 voice overs. I am hooked on the Antiques Road Show........they are broadcasting the Philly shows.....this week and for the next two weeks. (3 different shows....not the same show for 3 weeks)

I agree. When I lived in Lebanon, we got three PBS stations, WITF, WHYY, and WVIA, although not sure why about the 3rd one although we had a TV that wasn't connected to cable and would pick up all the Scranton stations, but WVIA was on cable. Anyways my favorite was always WITF, cause WHYY just started to blow after awhile, mainly because of Patrick Stoner. He's such a drab person, drab in an Amy Goodman way, and I can't fathom why so many PBS stations across the country pick up his 5-minute Flicks segment.

Thirteen is the best PBS station. NJN doesn't count. WLIW is next and since I don't live in Philly can't really judge WHYY.

thirteen is probably the best PBS station in the country or at least tied with WGBH.
WNET is responsible a good chunk of the national PBS lineup while WHYY seems to just produce the insipid Hometime which I don't think is even on anymore.
And yeah, WHYY isn't even seen in New York, not that that is a big loss.
NJN is a pretty good second tier PBS station, but WLIW is a bit better.

I have never heard of Patrck Stoner's 5-minute Flicks segment. I guess it wasn't good enough for WNET or WLIW.

I can't speak for Mr. Stoner, but I can assure you Ed Cunningham is not dolt. He speaks perfect english and may "sound" hoydy-toydy to those of us in the Delaware Valley who grew up saying "wooder" for water, or "cawfee" coffee, but...Ed's a real down to earth guy.

A local who loves the Phillies, grew up watching games at Conni Mack. He loves Rock 'n Roll, especially the Philly do-wop sounds and the Cameo-Parkway years of Chubby Checker and Bobby Rydel. More comforable enjoying a cheesesteak than cavier.

Let me put to to you this way. If Ed were running the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which he probably could do, HE would have the Rocky statue at the top center of the museum's steps on display as a national treasure, not hidden near the bushes as a snobby local embarassment. Ed is NOT a snob.

Given the quality of WABC's other late night syndie programs, like Byron Allen's awful low budget shows, that speaks volumes about Hometime.

Verizon FIOS is carrying WLVT 39 in South Jersey. I called Ch.39 many years ago - and asked about possible Comcast carriage in Southern NJ. The engineers responded it's out of their must-carry area. Prior, 39 couldn't assert carriage rights because of WHYY12 and NJN, being more local in Southern NJ and Delaware. WLVT could only claim the South Eastern PA portion of the Philadelphia DMA, some areas of Central NW NJ where usually the cable operator didn't play hardball, and some towns in between Allentown and Scranton, but within Wilkes Barre/Scranton's DMA, anywhere within 50 miles approximately.

[BTW, it lost DirecTV carriage for a while as well, and remains unavailable on Dish Network. Dish Network opposed carrying the station, as Dish finds it duplicative to WHYY, and Dish already carried 3 NCE (non commercial educational) stations - WHYY, NJN and WYBE.]

As for FIOS, it appears carriage of WLVT in Southern NJ is voluntary, just like the MSG/FSNY they provide. If I were running FIOS, I'd get WMGM 40 and WNET 13 on the dial as well, to push more of an alternative from Comcast's lineup. WNET 13 is receivable over the air, with a rooftop directional, in areas like Burlington County. Of course, WHYY wouldn't like it much, but I don't know if they could prevent it. Another one, though not very hugely popular would be WBPH 60 (Ind.). I believe they offer programs from FamilyNet, and they carry Lehigh sports.

I 'll watch the pledge drive breaks just to see how desperate they get with their begging. I love how the shows they show during the pledge drives rarely parallel what they show during the rest of the year, with the excpetion of good old Lawrence Welk and the bubbles....

You mean people wouldn't donate 50.00 to watch "Nature"? LOL

I think Patrick Stoner comes off pompous.

The irony is that my favorite PBS shows are the British comedies - which they almost always pre-empt during the beg-a-thon. So, I tune out for that week or 2 or 3 and they have no shot at our money. I'd rather see Basil Fawlty than the fifth run of Celtic Woman!

I forgot about some of their awful locally produced pledge stuff.
It looks like high schoolers were producing it and I think one of them had this guy from the Franklin Institute who seemed a bit too happy.

The "Bouquet" residence, the lady of the house speaking......
