Peachtree TV

I noticed that Turner has put up a place holder website at www.PeachtreeTV.com. It does not have any info on it yet other than "Coming Oct 1".

I just did the tour of CNN studios and saw the weather guy doing the a local forcast for the Atlanta broadcast signal of WTBS. I have stayed in Atlanta hotels where they get the over-the-air signal and I remember seeing the weather forcasts during time they normally break for the cable company to do local comercials. Unfortunately, I am on the intown Atlanta Comcast system and they run local commercials on WTBS and we do not see the weather forcast.

Anybody heard news about the programming on the new Peachtree TV? It would be interesting if they used their CNN resources to do "mini-newscasts" during the day. Like the networks used to do years ago during the dayparts.

Hey Barry. I think back when Superstation TBS started, Ted used to have CNN/Headline News anchors do a short "newsbreak". I'm not sure about the national feed, but the mornings, for a while, did have CNN news when the "Big 3" were in their late-night/early morning news.

That would be a good idea. That'll give some flashbacks when Tribune owned ch 46 as an independent and had WGNX news with Karyn Greer, now of WXIA fame. News has always been a costly, but major revenue-building investment. It's a prime example of "you've got to spend money to make money". I know I'd watch, just on the merits of pure curiosity.

Has anyone had any luck in finding out if DirecTV is going to broadcast TBS National when the local goes to Peachtree TV? Right now they black out TBS National. I contacted them a few weeks ago, and they told me there were no plans to lift the blackout.

1. DirectTV (and all Atlanta cable companies) will air national TBS starting October 1st (I think Channel 76 on Comcast since Spike TV moved to 78 suddenly...but I'm not certain).

2. Peachtree TV will have no news initally. They would be smart ot partner with WSB-TV for a 10 PM news to comepete with WAGA and WXIA/WATL. They may continue to carry the 6 AM half-hour simulcast of Headline News.

3. Time Warner is doing this to prep Channel 17 for sale...period. Don't let their denials fool you.

4. When will Ted Turner make a public comment about all of this? I am dying to hear what he has to say about the death of his creation that mad him who he is today.

Ted probably won't care. Just as Don Kennedy didn't speak up when 96 Rock was blown up. Ted's creations still live on in cable form, including the TBS network. I think he'll be able to part with this.

Wouldn't WPCH-TV also fall under must-carry rules for Atlanta cable (and as such, also be on DirecTV's "Local Channels" option)?

It would fall under must carry, however, the cable/sat providers sign long term aggreements with each broadcast station. I am sure TBS has the same thing. It would depend on when the contracts expire and how much pull TBS has witht he providor. Given the magnitude of Time-Warner, I am sure they have enough clout with DirecTV and DISH to get the signal up there.

I just saw a promo on WTBS for the change coming October. TBS will move to Comcast 39 and Peachtree TV will remain on Comcast 7.

I just called Comcast and here are the changes going into effect 10/1:

7 Peachtree TV
39 TBS
54 ABC Family
79 Oxygen (digital package only)

> Just as Don Kennedy didn't speak up when 96 Rock was blown up.

Why should Don Kennedy have cared about 96Rock? During Don's days, WKLS-FM "that's Class", played elevator music.

I know he didn't start the format 96 Rock, but he has spoken about it before. It became a heritage station, and even though he only founded the frequency, he does have some connection to it.

Anyone realize that ABC Family(formerly CBN>Family>Fox Family) has been on channel 39 since the early 90s with Comcast(formerly GCTV/Wometco>MediaOne>AT&T)? Just a crazy little useless fact. What's going to happen to channel 76 and what was the purpose of moving Spike to 78? MTV/VH1/CNN/TNT/ESPN/ESPN2/Fox Sports have not moved from their spots since September of 1993 after the FCC decided to "package" cable channels and no longer charge you for multiple outlets (per month that is).

First of all, you guys do realize that the cable arrays are completely different in different markets? Therefore, just because TBS is on ch 77 in market "A" doesn't mean it's going to be 77 everywhere. And, that doesn't even apply for the entire market, since each headend is set up differently, mostly because they were smaller cable outlets bought out by the bigger ones.

Secondly, Ted said his part years ago when Time-Warner was slowly taking over control. He was bitter when he "merged" with them and found out he had less control over what he built. Then, when AOL bought everything, they basically screwed the pooch and phased him out all together, which is why he retired. He hates to see what others are doing to what he built. TBS is splitting up, the Braves are sold off, Turner South annhialated. But, that's business and he knows it. So, what's the use of living in the past? He's got his ranch, philanthropic ventures and bison burgers (which are very tasty, btw) to worry about. It's his golden years. Let him enjoy them.

I have a Media 1 (before they went national as MediaOne) cable lineup from November 1995 still taped on my wall today that shows that.

The channels from 1995 that are the same today are.

3 WSB
4 WAGA
7 WTBS
8 WGTV
9 WGCL - was WGNX
10 WUPA - just changed calls from WVEU then
11 WHSG - just added - Channel 11 was a secondary community channel (main community channel was channel 2 - now 25 with infomercials instead of a bulletin board when there is no video playing)
23 Government Access - Cobb County's TV23 just launched - was a 24/7 character generator)
24 Educational Access - was only a character generator 24/7 in Cobb then with some NASA programming, just moved from Channel 5 to make room for WTLK (now WPXA) 14
34 CNN
39 Family Channel
41 TNT
48 SportSouth - became FSN South
50 MTV
51 VH1

ESPN was Channel 47, ESPN2 was not available yet. This was the year before broadband was introduced to some areas (and not to all areas until 2006). In 1999, The locals were split up only on the broadband lineup, with WXIA moving to Channel 6 (anyone know why?), WPXA to 12, and WATL to 5. The classic non-upgraded local lineup remained the same (Acworth CableNET copied this lineup when they launched in 2001 and stayed the same until their demise in June). In 2000, when AT&T took over, they brought us the "neighborhoods", which is what we have today.

We have been talking in general terms about Comcast. Most of metro Atlanta Comcast customers are being fed from two head ends.. one in Stone Mountain and one in Vinings. With the fiber plant there is no longer a need to have some many local head ends.

The channel changes we have been talking about are for metro Comcast only. Too many systems to figure out what is going on for each one. Comcast is the big kahoona. :)

Bison filet is the way to go.

Yeah, buddy! I have been there quite a few times, and there is nothing on that menu that I haven't liked. I love their "no freezers, everything's fresh" idea, but figure that's what's killing the profit margin. They're great restaurants with great people and atmosphere, but every time I hear them mentioned, I hear they're failing. Although a bit pricey (which is why it's only been a few visits instead of many) for my wallet, they're a great place.

I know somebody at TMG and I think things are looking better for the company or so I've heard from them.

That's good to know. They've got a great product, and great service. If they can open some of the closed minds then they'll be very successful, but it takes time, as which Bison (and other leaner meats) are becoming "trendy". Plus, Ted's determined to make it work, which 99% of what he does is successful when he's at it head-strong. That's why he's a billionare!
