Pending Doom For Talk 1200 In Boston

Yet another Rush Radio has debuted, this time on an FM--94.7, Vero beach/Ft Pierce FL area.
Sim. to XKS--morning show local then same lineup. If either Kiss or Jam'n had had REALLY bad ratings/earnings CC could have launched what is now on 1200 on FM...when I posted this news on Free Republic someone in SF-Bay Area said they wished they could have FM talk in their area due to powerline interference on AM.

Again should 1200 change (I don't think it will, not before '12 elections) I could see CC try to place Rush and a couple other shows on 96.9 (if they haven't flipped by then) or back to RKO

Could be...the suits at CC want their shows cleared and even if ratings aren't high, the spots get run. I still think between RKO, TKK, and XKS, there's prob one too many all-talk stations (and yes TKK isn't necessarily conservative talk these days, though to the lefties they're probably
considered far right wing!) We'll see if TKK goes to music eventually or XKS changes to something else; of the three I'd expect Entercom to keep RKO going as talk and make a little
money but they too are prob being subsidized by a more successful station, WEEI.

Then again even if they aren't gangbusters in the ratings, WTKK may be doing OK enough for Greater to keep them talk (and again...Howie in late '12?) and MJX, ROR, KLB subsidize them!

Now there's too many schlock stations WODS WROR WMJX WBMX WPLM
and the entire playlist of WZLX the last time I listened:
1. Going Mobile by The Who
2. Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd
3. Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin
4. Come Together by The Beatless
5. Miss You by the Rolling Stones
6. Born in the U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen
7. Golden Years by David Bowie
that's it.

According to Harold Camping the "pending doom" is the end of the world which will start on May 21;
"the Bible guarantees it", as billboards his Family Radio have put up are saying. My hunch is Family
Radio will still be on air come May 22, even if they say earthquakes will strike every country starting in New Zealand as the Rapture begins. But Clear Channel is making $$$ (as is CBS Outdoor) with
Family Radio billboards (Jesus is coming, look busy). That perhaps is helping to finance WXKS (AM).
The money CC makes on those billboards! Repent!

I'm not sure I buy into the "corporate greed" line in the Herald article.

If I own a bunch of billboards and someone comes to me wanting to put their message on those billboards, why wouldn't I take their money? Camping may well be crazy, but it's hard to argue that there's anything illegal about what he's doing. I don't care for his message, but it's hard for me to see where CC Outdoor would be justified in refusing to take his money and run his billboards.

And no, Camping's billboards aren't subsidizing Talk 1200. CC Outdoor and CC Radio are two very distant divisions of the same large company. There's no direct accounting connection; I don't think CC radio stations even get any break on the rates from CC Outdoor.

That perhaps is helping to finance WXKS (AM).

After reading this type of missive for what must be years, something has to be said. You have absolutely no understanding of the business side of the broadcasting or advertising businesses. It's just the way it is. Perhaps too much time and experience on the non-comm side.

Regards,
TSB

Oh OK re: Clear Channel, but I was tending to think of them as one of the same. And I expressed the view of "yeah they should make money off this charlatan if they choose to" a couple places.

TSBench:

You may be right. Now, if Camping were to start buying spots on 1200 with the rapture message
it would be different. (As for no understanding, haven't you also read my opinions when somebody here says "they should change xxx to a format I like, I don't care if nobody else likes it"...am I not the one pointing out that it's a business decision? That yes, I'm sure you'd like Sporting News Radio
full time on 850, and I'd like Sox games simulcast on 93.7, but business decisions prevent that from happening. So I must have at least some understanding of the radio biz. Also note that despite my 30 years being on non-comm radio, I'm on the "Defund NPR" bandwagon...)

Oh OK re: Clear Channel

speaking of, 1200 is anything but clear. theres a weak IBOC from 1195-1200 at night. and coast2coast chewing away at itself on each sideband

WHAM has the cleanest least interference-ridden C2C in this area of the dial on 1180

WXKS-AM keeps sinking like the Titanic. Talk 1200 is now one tenth of a percentage point ahead of sister station WKOX. Time for Clear Channel to pull the life-support plug.

The numbers tell the story, I hope Paula O'Connor and Eric Coldwell didn't spend alot of cash decorating their offices and if he was smart Jeff Katz rented his new residence.

WXKS-AM:

Jan. 2011 - 0.5 58,400

Feb. 2011 - 0.4 58,500

Mar. 2011 - 0.3 55,500

If he doesn't like Katz maybe he should start listening to WWZN. He might help them get out of the single digits. In numbers of listeners, I mean :)

What's not to like about Katz and his "interviews"?
Katz: blah blah blah?
pause
"Guest": blah blah blah.
pause
Katz: blah blah blah... etc.

Have you ever heard an actual interview where the interviewer and the guest didn't ever step on each other's words? It's not just when he has big names like Rumsfeld. Cripes - he's even using the gimmick on easy gets like the local Jeff Jacoby who was on today.

I have been in the car early this week and had a chance to listen to Katz the past two mornings. I guess the benefit of having no listeners is there are few callers which is fine with me.

Katz has an odd talk show host style. He always sounds like he is doing a commercial for a paint store. Even when he is interviewing someone he sounds like he is selling something. I think he would sound better if he just talked in a normal conversational tone.
