Radiodial, Thank You for the nice things you said last month about my monthly ramblings on the ratings, I appreciate it and have been remiss in not letting you know much earlier. Hopefully slateradio will add his comments as well.
Onward with the meaningless to many, I feel there is some value in the 12+, not a great deal, but not meaningless. If nothing else it did start some good debate on this board at one time.
1. KBXX & 2. KMJQ - Radio One rules the Houston airwaves, even KROI is moving on up to over a 1.5 and 22nd place. Will listen to the station sometime today and see if I can tell if they made any changes. It has been rumored that KXGJ 101.7 and KEYH 850 will be Spanish Oldies any day now. They were running a very Easy Listening Romantica format last night.
3. KLTN - Univision is another company that knows how to program a station and is not afraid to go in and make the necessary adjustments to a station that is faltering as KLTN was, but has climbed back up to the top end of the ratings.
4. KODA - Christmas music is very good to Sunny 99 and CC. Inside Radio posted some fantastic numbers that Sunny is getting once again with the all Christmas music format from Arbitron's PPM test here in Houston. IIRC Sunny 99 is pulling about a 12.8 rating at this time.
5. KRBE - who else?
6. KILT-FM - #1 in Country and CBS Radio will keep KILT in first place. KKBQ is not a threat to KILT now or tomorrow, unless there is a great turn around at Cox and I don't see that happening.
7. KTRH-AM - I'm still pissed at CC for killing the News on KTRH, but it hasn't hurt their ratings any. I guess that Houston is not a city of people that are interested in an all News station, but would rather hear Talk radio. Sad for a world class city like Houston.
8. KTBZ-FM - The Buzz is down 0.5, but that seems to be the norm for KTBZ. Next month it will be up 0.5.
9. KTJM/KJOJ-FM - La Raza is doing very well for Liberman, it is down 0.5 this trend, but KTJM also swings up and down by half a point like The Buzz. The only station in Liberman's stable of stations that is doing very well in the ratings, but you don't have to be in the ratings to be making money. Don't know if any of Liberman's stations are doing anything in the way of profits. I also wonder if Liberman is another Cox in the world of broadcasting and just lets their stations sit there and rot? A couple of companies that could take a lesson from Radio One and Univision.
10. KPTY - Univision has kept The Party going, it is down 0.3 this Phase, but not a big deal and Univision will keep making any changes necessary to keep KPTY viable. Wonder when/if Univision will move KPTI 105.3 from Crystal Beach and a signal that barely touches Galveston to Winnie with an upgrade to a Class C2, which will give them a good signal on 105.3 from Houston to Beaumont for Party. I don't know if the FCC has made a final ruling on the move yet. This would likely allow Univision to move KPTY 104.9 from downtown to Missouri City as a Class C1 and cover most of metro Houston.
11. KTHT - Country Legends, Cox lucked out with the right format on the right frequency. With the great coverage that Legends has on 97.1 and Classic Country the station is doing very well with only Tubby as the on air personality. It isn't anything that Cox is doing, just damn lucky. If only someone that was interesed in their stations would buy all of Cox's properties and program the stations all the way and not half assed Houston radio would benefit.
12(t). KKBQ - 93Q around a 3 rating where it has been for some time. Guess the new morning show didn't have any impact on KKBQ's ratings. KILT doesn't have anything to worry about as long as they don't get complacent also. 93Q is another Cox station.
12(t). KLOL - CC's Hurban up .5 and you have read the previous posts below. CC will keep plugging away and Mega 101 will stay in the game.
14. KHMX - down 0.4, I wonder what CC has in mind for Mix? Will they stay the as is or will '06 usher in a new format on 96.5, possibly an Active Rock format or Hot Talk? While 14th isn't bad in a market of 70 stations, I think that the right format will pull the 96.5 frequency out of the pile-up of stations with ratings from 3.2 to 2.3 (11 stations). Mix is over the 2.6 mark and could pull into the top ten with something new and fresh.
15. KOVE-FM - The Spanish language AC/Romantica station is rock solid at about 2.5 and has been for some time now. Does Univision leave well enough alone or go for some changes and shoot for the top ten, which they have the know how to achieve?
16(t). KKRW - The Arrow down .4, second phase in a row they are down now. I doubt that there will be any changes at The Arrow though, unless they continue to trend down and CC will also make changes needed to keep a station in the running.
16(t). KLDE - Cox actually did something and reimage 107.5 and dropped any reference to oldies. Station sounds much better and one of the few HD Radio stations in the city. Up .2 and I think KLDE will be around for a while.
18(t). KHJZ - The CBS Radio station is down .6 from the Summer Book and getting dangerously near the 2 mark in the ratings. Sunny 99 probably accounts for a big share of former The Wave listeners during the Holiday Season. If The Wave doesn't come back up in ratings by Spring or keeps sliding, is a new format in store for the old KIKK address on the dial? I wonder if the Smooth Jazz format has a "shelf life" of just so long before listeners tire of the format and move on to other stations. Not that there is a lot to pick from in Houston. The Wave could do something radical, go Traditional Jazz. Or is that too much of speciality format without mass appeal and they would be competing against KTSU 90.9 The Choice, a fine station for those that haven't heard it and for those that can receive the station, KPVU 91.3 from Prairie View A&M another good Jazz station. Probably too much competion in the non-commercial part of the band for that to work.
18(t). KPRC-AM how the once mighty has fallen. Down another .3 and .8 since the Summer Book. KTRH must have taken all the popular talk shows and left KPRC with shows that aren't showing any promise the way the station is dropping in the ratings. Maybe CC should pry open the pocket book and try all local and live talk. I know it means hiring people, something that CC is loathe to do.
20(t) KHPT - How Fu*king long is Cox going to let this format sit on 1069, they haven't even had a morning show in over a year. By the time Cox does anything the 80's will be a popular format again. In a city with limited English language frequencies, Cox is doing the citizens of the city a disserve letting a rotting format sit on a good frequency.
20(t). KQBU - One of Univision's stations that is sitting near the 1.5 mark. They have a very good signal for a rim-shot, I'm surprised that Univision hasn't done anything with 93.3, but then the station could be making a decent profit with the rating it has and no need to change formats. I have the feeling that Univision could come up with a format that would do much better though.
22. KROI - Radio One's experiment into the Hispanic market. KROI up .2 since last month and .5 since the Summer Book. I believe Mediafrog has stated R O will stay with the format until 2Q 2006 and then decide what to do with KROI. I think he is correct. Radio One may either change to a format that will do well with the Hispanic population or make the changes to KROI's current format to bring it up to a respectable rating. Then again Urban Gospel would bring a 3+ rating to KROI over night. Martin Broadcasting KWWJ 1360 would be their competion during the day, but at night KWWJ must go to a pattern that only covers Baytown and Galveston, leaving the city without any Urban Gospel outlet. While KWWJ is under a 1 in the ratings, it is actually very good for a daytimer for Houston and suburbs, on AM and is hampered in coverage due to stations in DFW and Corpus Christi during the day. I vote for Urban Gospel on 92.1 come Spring of 2006.
23. KILT-AM - up .2 but I think that is the best that Sports 6-10 will do, the mid ones. KBME certainly didn't hurt them any. CC will probably stay with Sports 6-10 as it probably bills fairly well.
24. KIOL - I like this station and the people on the air. Down .2 and almost a one rating station now. I doubt that the new partnership will go for this kind of rating, even on a rim-shot with signal issues. Wish they get the music format changed to one that will bring in the listeners. I don't see KIOL in it's present format on the air past 2Q 2006. The way the 12+ ratings are going, KIOL will be off the chart by 2Q of 2006. Doesn't bode well for the station and personnel. The air staff has really given it their best shot and don't fault them.
27(t). KLAT - I applaud Univision for keeping a News station on the air for the Spanish speaking population, even though they could do better in the ratings than the upper mid zeros with another format. It is good to see a company that cares about a small sector of the population and keep a station like KLAT on the air with News. The station has good Houston coverage day and night, so Univision has many options open to them, but has choosen to serve a dedicated, but small piece of the pie.
32(t). KBME - In the mid zeros and going no where. CC should really try Air America on this station. KBME has good Houston coverage and I think AAR will do much better than the Sports format. Houston is the only large Texas city without a AAR outlet. It is time.
32(t). KFNC - Bottom of the chart with KBME. I don't know if Houston doesn't care about a News station, from the KTRH ratings, I guess not, but with KFNC's horrid signal many don't even know that 97.5 exists. I wonder hwo they would do on a full market signal {and NO I do not mean 104.1, never!}, but if 97.5 was on par with KILT-FM, Sunny, The Wave, etc would they have ratings in the two or three range? Cumulus would also have to go all news all day and move Jim Pruett to preferably the all night slot where the show would fit in better on a News station. If I was running Cumulus I would pair up Jim Pruett with Outlaw Dave afternoons. When Jim comes in after his show is over on KFNC at 5pm and sticks around with OD, the show is much better. Jim Prueett is still very good at the ad lib and a show with OD and JP would be a good one, KIOL just needs to change the music and if KIOL doesn't stop with the Pink Floyd every hour like it just came out, I will kill myself and this will be the last of these novels.
Happy Merry Whatever Holiday or Observance you do or do not partake this time of year. For those that it applies to a Happy New Year, even if your New Year is some other time of the calendar, Happy New Year, fu*k all this PC.
