PHIL HENDRIE RETURNS TO VALLEY AIRWAVES

If Kid is leaving KTAR then that opens up a slot. If they put on Hendrie that would be a huge move for them. Could Hendrie really be live on the radio again in Phoenix?

So does that mean..."We'll Have A Gaydos Old Time" 7-10 (that's a
Flintstones reference, not what you're thinking! ;D) and Hendrie 10-1?

At least it'll give Russ a few months to think about how to schedule
evenings when Hendrie slides to 11-2 in November.

But wait! What about the all-important Larry King audio rerun, aka
Softballs At Midnight?

I'm not sure I see Hendrie as Bonneville material. :-\ Sure, Hendrie is a ratings bonanza for any station. But I don't see him jelling with Bonneville's values and desired identity for KTAR. I could be wrong, though.

Phil has done well since he started his voices again.

There is a blogger that has MP3'd all his shows for download, worth a listen.

Something is up at TAR, give Gaydos the heave ho!

Pay attention Jay, since you often lament as to my negativity regarding KTAR (I call it realism), but here's something for ya:

Thank God KTAR is bringing on Phil Hendrie! One of the most talented, innovative broadcasters in the industry. In an era of talking clones it's nice to see that Phil Hendrie 1) returned to the air and 2) tweaked his already winning formula. I give major kudos to KTAR on this move. I won't even mention that KTAR should have taken it a step further and given Gaydos the ax... but hey, a very big step in the right direction.

Amen to that, pulling in Phil from 1290 AM in Tucson is nearly impossible and online is a hassle.

This is the best thing TAR has done in years. I hope Phil isn't too edgy for KTAR (more like KTAR being too square for Phil).

His new show is different, he still does bits, but they aren't scripted by a team of writers, and aren't more than 10-15 minutes long, and usually aren't designed for callers (probably because the show is new not on many stations).

But, Phil talks more and gives his opinion more and hashes out the issues as he sees them, not as someone tells him to see them, or worse, how the public sentiment says he should see them (like most of the phoney talk show hosts today).

Now, about Gaydos....... Having him do the show before Hendrie is like the freshman team playing before varsity, sure its a radio show, just not a good one and not worth wasting your time on.

gaydos is alright. i'd like to hear more people join him in studio though; guests & co-hosts.

tony femino 1-4, including the newsroom, would make a solid line-up.

pat mcmahon should only be doing his commentary, god show and the occasional visit to the newsroom.

and bring back the authoritative production / vo they had a couple months ago; i don't like ktar's new softer imaging.

phil hendrie will be a great listen. ..he's a brilliant broadcaster.

femino & gaydos 1-4 with newsroom,

savage live & hendrie live... would be an awesome line-up, i think.

they can't do savage live, i know.

what's the plan for larry king i wonder?

save larry for the 10pm time change hole or hd2?

Good news for Phil's new show, he's getting better every night. I actually think this new show has the potential to beat the original show, which is saying something considering it may be the greatest show in radio history.

You must learn to end a nice comment (looking forward to P.H.) with a period. Let it go at that.
Then I'll know you are indeed a reformed KTAR critic. (of whom there are many, all frustrated program directors). Here's an example.

Gee Jay I am really looking forward to Phil Hendrie, his show is wonderful. KTAR has done well.
PERIOD.

Now if you choose you may also add another positive like "and Jay, I sure enjoy your show as well" PERIOD
or "you know, that Pat is an amazing interviewer" PERIOD or "hey Jay, the morning show with Ned and Connie is the most informative morning show in the Valley" PERIOD or how about, "Jay, the more I listen to Ankarlo, the better I like him" PERIOD. PERIOD

Your rare pats on the back always have a codicile. I was hoping you were trainable. Oh Well.

BY the way. I will miss Kid. He wasn't an immediate hit with me. Kid was, and I told him this same thing, an acquired taste. But listening to him, I found his "take" on many news items marvelous. His enthusiasm and verve should be an example for all of us on the air. It was obvious he liked what he was doing. It was never a chore.

I too look forward to Phil, His show requires so much show prep. He must be in a recording studio for a few hours a day.

And of course your next comment "Jay, just another suck up post"

Have a great week

Jay, you're right--at least in the sense that I should have thrown in a "gee Jay, your show is excellent"... which is true, I don't always get an opportunity to tune in of course, but when I do I am entertained. You see? I can say many nice things about KTAR (Phil Hendrie, Jay...) I am objective about every station in every market as none of them are lining my pockets per se, even if they were my objectivity remains.

Phil is amazing. I have yet to really hear the new incarnation of his show, however. I have heard small bits but I haven't really had much of an opportunity to check out his 'new' show, but tonight I shall be tuned in eagerly to KTAR. (It's been a long time since I've said that).

Jay, you have a thin skin.

I think Russ did a good job on this one, a class act all the way.

I listened to your show last nite, good show, but the McCain sucking up was a bit much. I'm a Republican, and I think McCain is an idiot. I also think he is an American hero.

You can be both, I will praise him for his service, yet rag on him for being a terrible politician. I feel the same way for John Glenn, a brilliant man and a personal hero, but a lousy senator. JD Hayworth? Lousy congressman, and pathetic talk show host.

Now, on to Phil, I'm guessing that the Lloyd Bonafide character will hit the KTAR demographic!

Legend and KMGX

1. Thin Skin Not me. If I had thin skin I'd be worried about the "dull" comments elsewhere on this board. But I don't have thin skin, I'm not worried, I didn't read the posts more than 5 or 6 times, I'm not worried I don't have thin skin, whoops I juts cut myself on the keyboard typing this. Thin Skin not me nosir sot me.

2. Sucking up to John McCain. Yep I guess saying we disagree on illegal immigration, McCain Feingold, and the war is sucking up. He is an American hero and my comments about him dealt with the talk show host who I keep telling everyone is under investigation for his illegal acts as a congressman. That host has the
audacity to trash John McCain. That host who has not served a day in our military has the nerve to trash a real man with whom I may disagree on a few MAJOR issues but for whom my respect is undying,

3. you are both obviously broadcasters. Your comments are astute, and knowledgeable. I have said a number of times just wait, it is too soon to be counting numbers. Both of you obviously have access to more
numbers than even I. You have seen the incredible cume numbers for 92.3. You both know that it takes a long time for quarter hours to follow and that our station, because it is a tune in for news station will take a while to quarter hour. The other station has fewer listeners but they stay forever. The "infirm" (humor) can sit and listen to Rush and shawn hour after hour thus big quarter hours.

4. thin skin, me no sir not me what thin skin DULL where's my razor
