Boring angry talk radio.

You kids get off my lawn! Don't forget to show your KFYI loyal listener card at the restaurant in Smitty's after 4 and get 2 for 1 early bird specials, featuring genuine American all white meat chicken.

I Loved Smittys

My dad took mom to breakfast at Smitty's once for Mother's Day. It's any wonder they're coming up on their 50th anniversary. She still gives him grief for that.

Remember when you wanted any kind of fruit or vegetable at Smitty's you'd have to take it to a clerk to be weighed and priced? Talk about shovel ready jobs! And then there was Hal'nJoni http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lXPY4oyQvQ

Does KFWhyEye really have a loyal listener card? Will Pat McBland be dialing the Media Hut on Cash Call? Does anyone remember who Lin Sue was before Cooney and Shepherd? Is it hot where you are?

KYOT up a full share ....KOOL down almost a share and a half......KAJM down .2 Still think the new KYOT is targeting the 1 share radio station - or the 7 share one?

KOOL, KYOT, and KAJM will always share songs, but the following will ONLY get airplay on KAJM:

One Way
Zapp
Tom Tom Club
Funkadelic / Parliament
George Clinton
Slave
Confunkshun
Lakeside
Barkays
Jody Watley
Expose
Timex Social Club
Stevie B

I know they don't go as deep as they should, but since no one touches those artists (yet), they will continue to have fans no matter what nonsense is between them

Well, they HAVE been around forever!

Well so has RC Cola. Ever drink it? As far as I can tell it is every bit as good as Coke or Pepsi, but for some reason they're happy with occupying and almost non-existent market niche.

Mega is the RC Cola of Phoenix "oldies" radio. They could try to take on the big boys, and to be honest could probably make some headway if they did it right, but instead they sit nestled in their niche.

The only reason Movin didn't work out is because they confused people with off the wall programming.

I'd counter that the reason Movin didn't work out is that it was a cookie-cutter format dreamed up by some consulting firm who sold it to low-rent operations as a panacea for creating an actual radio station.

13th place 25-54 is not great for any talk station, let alone an FM talk station. But if you look around the country, most talk stations only do well in the upper demos. What talk format would appeal to 25-54s? IMHO, that's a question that needs to be answered before talk's current audience dies off, killing the conservative talk format. Is it a combination of politics (not necessarily right vs. left), guy talk, pop culture, Fresh Air-type interviews?

If you can figure out how to make talk radio appeal to people under 55, you'll be rich.

I'm not sure if NPR style Fresh Air is the ticket. The NPR news talk stations are pretty grey. They get a younger audience than fine arts programming, but they can be heavy on the 55+.

Personally, I prefer sports stations heavy on the guy talk & pop culture. They don't get much in the numbers department, so maybe what I like isn't what other people like.

I'd rather rip off my toenails than listen to political talk radio, no matter what side of the aisle.

My current station, WOKV (Jacksonville, FL), just finished the current book #1 in adults 25-54. Not only that, each and every one of our shows from 5a-9p finished #1 in that demographic. I think we appeal to those under the age of 55 very nicely, thank you very much. :)

Is that WOKV 690, formerly "The Big Ape"? ("9:14 with the Four Tops...")

Hal Brice actually changed his name to Hal Heil-Brice. He will NEVER get his mancard back. They were so saccharine back in the 80's, like some kind of doped up Disney Tour Guide.

I found an amazing show on the BBC Podcasts, its called "Thinking Allowed" good stuff, as are most of their podcasts.

Yeah, same facility but with an FM simulcast.

I still have a postcard from the early 60's from WAPE with the "Ape" (guy in a gorilla suit) holding some bikini babes next to the pool at their motel-converted-to-station studio site.

A couple of AMs have been #1 recently in 25 54 with talk, including Emmis' KLBJ in Austin. I believe the talker in Buffalo, WBEN, is pretty consistently top 5.

And the ones that are on FM or do simulcasts do well. KSL is second or third much of the time, for example. And WSB in Atlanta is another... averaging around 3rd in 25-54.
