I had the opportunity to watch some local newscasts in Phoenix this past weekend and I have some questions/comments;

Both Channel 12 and Channel 15 newscasts appeard to have poor set lighting. (or Cox cable was transmitting poor signals). The skin tones on the talent for both channels seemed a bit cold/hard. Air talent typically favor correct lighting that favors them. Was it my set or is just me?

I know consultants favor running the color red in the news sets and graphics but the red band on the Channel 15 set under the blue and gold seems a liitle out of place. The ABC O & O's run a nice blue and gold/yellow that seems to be working them just fine.

I also noticed that the CBS network news on Channel 5 runs at 6:00 PM instead of the 5:30 slot that I believe it runs in during daylight savings time. Does the fact that AZ does not observe DST affect the time slots for the news or is this just a Channel 5 decision? Channel 12 seemed to run it's shows at the pre-DST times.

And finally, I noticed an ad that ran in the Arizona Republic for Channel 12 news that went something like, "Different People......Cooney and Curtis". I can't remember the rest of it but it seems like a ridiculous ad to run for a newscast, even it applies to Mark Curtis. He was run out of Minneapolis 10 or so years ago for an "additude" situation with the viewers.

Nothing to do with DST (or lack of it).

When KPHO-TV expanded from the usual
"sandwich" (5:00/6:00 local wrapped
around 5:30 network) by adding a
half-hour at 6:30, they restructured
the whole package with local 5:00-6:00,
network 6:00-6:30, local 6:30-7:00.

The upside is that all three netcasts
aren't on at the same time, the downside
is the CBS show is now at least an hour
old (or even 1:30) when it airs, although
one would hope in the summer the KPHO
techs are savvy enough to turn around the
5:30 left coast feed when it has updates.

That's funny, because I always thought Channel 3 had lousy lighting. And Channel 5 ought to see if they can soften the lighting in order to help Kent Dana.

Channel 15 has issues that go deeper than their set. The red would seem out of place, though.

This is a Channel 5 decision. They've done this for a few months. It's designed to set them apart from the other stations. They have a local newscast at 6:30 when the other network affiliates are running the national news.

I think Mark Curtis is pretty good at what he does, but it's just an opinion. He apparently tests well here. As for the ad campaign, there was a thread on this board a few months ago in which the ads were ridiculed strongly. They're pretty stupid, but then again, Channel 12 has always taken itself waaaay to seriously.

I just want there to be a local news broadcast that isn't aimed at idiots, doesn't have long puff pieces about the famous celebrity that just happens to be the star of the show that is following the news, doesn't stoop to do sensationalized garbage stories during sweeps ("Inside the life of a Valley Male Stripper!), and actually covers the news with professionals who understand the world, not just a barbie and ken doll (and the requsite Asian female reporter).

That's all I ask.

Phoenix news RIP

Wait -- I think I vaguely remember that concept from history books. You're talking about serious professional journalism, aren't you?

Amen brother (or sister)! But I think it may be far too late to turn this shallow garbage train around now. Barbie and Ken are cheap, easily moldable, and plentiful. Good luck on finding that substantive local newscast and let us know about it!

Re: Phoenix news RIP

I gave up, I read now!

Oh, and BBC World Service is good for news.

At least we don't have Tammy Vo standing in a drainage ditch during a monsoon remarking that with the 3 inches of water flowing by, its like being in the ocean.

Oh, c'mon, we have the Arizona Nightly News now! It SOUNDS like a serious newscast. It's anchored by Cooney and Curtis -- TWO different people (I'm sure you didn't know that) and ONE great newsteam!

Lord, help us!!!

P.S. Rick DeBruel did a good job co-anchoring 12 News this morning. Why don't they just give him the job permanently? Scott Lightweight just doesn't do much for me!!
