Phoenix Stations you miss.....

...it was too bad they had to settle for the 105.3 signal out of Wickenburg. It just didn't reach enough of the metro area.

That's what I hated about it. Not too much of a problem when I was living in Glendale in '93-'94, but a pain after I moved to Tempe in '94.

I agree KRDS was superior to K-LOVE if only because it was never generic, and we had fun.

And that's what I loved about it. I hate canned radio; KRDS had great Christian music with personality. It isn't always perfect, but it was real.

When I was at KRDS in 1985-86, our studios were at 8611 N. Black Canyon Hwy across from Metrocenter. We leased office space and it was actually not too bad.

In 1975, the offices were in the penthouse suite, atop Metrocenter, only the GM, George Carroll, a receptionist, and I guess a sales person or two were there. The rest of us were in Tolleson.

KUKQ
KFMA (Wickenburg) Got the honor of working there for a few the last couple of months before heading over to The Edge 106.3
KEYX
KSTM
Y-95
KZZP in the 80's
KKFR (The Fire Station) I seem to Recall a Big Bear wearing a Fire Hat. Maybe a Smokey Bear sign LOL.. Memory has trouble going that far back..

KFYI was KKFR's sister station so we shared the "crack house" on First Av. Those "92 Fire FM" people HATED that bear. Midday diva (she was actually very nice) DeAnne Schade was especially vocal about her disdain for the creature.

I keep waiting for a Smokey The Dancing Bear spot to show up on You Tube, but nobody has posted one yet. 92 You're Fired FM!

Phoenix Is On FIRE...just nothin' but smoke out Buckeye way! Wasn't Charlie Van Dyke the PD back then?

It was my pleasure to be on Tolleson's 1190 back in 1962 when the call letters were KZON -- no connection with the call that was resurrected decades later. 250 mighty watts -- the owner, E.O.Smith branded it "The Mighty 1190" -- but the signal was pretty thin across the valley.

In February of 1963, I got a letter from Gary Seger, PD of KRDS, verifying reception of KRDS in Cleveland, OH, He mentions that the calls were KZON, and the studios were at 4000 N. 7th St in PHX.

The funny thing is that when I lived in Scottsdale about a decade later, it was hard to pick up 1190 about 10 blocks from Los Arcos Mall.

Were they CHR? Doesn't really sound like a CHR to me. First time I've heard an aircheck of Fire 92, as I moved from Phoenix in 1977. I expected more of a high energy CHR presentation. Maybe mornings were more subdued?

I remember it being described as a CHR-Oldies hybrid. They played currents into the Doobies and Dionne Warwick. Later picked up tempo, dropped the AC/oldies records, added Warp Factor jingles. It was the format of the month club for several years.

Anyone remember the 9 O'Clock Jock on KSTM-The Storm, talk about a great way to build audience? I had 3 friends that went in to play their (pre-opproved) favorite songs with Jeff Perrets, had big parties at anyone's place, as long as their parents were out of town. ;D

I'm glad KZZP is still around. It was my favorite growing up in the 80's. I just miss it since I'm not in Phoenix anymore. :'(

KZZP lives in call letters only.

I had never heard DJ'S like KZZP had in the 80's. I was so impressed by Jonathan B, Steve Goddard, and Randy Stewart. Anyone know what happened to the latter ?
