People are so negative about commercial radio it's not even funny.

Try owning a station for just one day.

If I owned a station I would do something creative. Not this milk toast generic programming that sounds like every other station on the dial. Sorry... you may have not noticed, but radio sounds a little bland these days.

There were people of all "colors" who enjoyed great Classic Soul/R&B music. I don't hear any of the current pirates programming with any wider community in mind than their very local immediate audience.

Once again, Eli dominates all of you. When intelligent people with money want to hear black people make music, they want to hear singing, not unintelligible lyrics and songs that sound like they were made on a laptop.

Maxwell, Alicia Keys, hip-hop songs of the 80's and 90's = music for people who patronize radio advertisers

The music on Boston pirate stations = music for people who are younger and don't have disposable income

It really doesn't get any simpler than that.

Younger people don't have a disposable income? Well perhaps the radio industry shouldn't be so concerned about getting them to listen and the amount of money they use to measure the audience in the 18+ year old range. Who exactly is Radio Disney aimed at?

Well, assuming we use your business model and only program radio stations for people that patronize advertisers then the music you hear on non-comms should be serving the communities being served by the pirates. Well that ain't happening!

You have taught me something that I haven't known before and that is radio is aimed at intelligent people. That must be why radio and TV copy is aimed at an 8th grade education.

Let's look at the average listener. They have no idea whether a station is licensed or unlicensed and I don't think that they really care.

The bottom line is, if they like it, they listen and if the don't they won't. That should be the message licensed radio stations should be getting.

We on this board give more attention to pirates because we know about them. The average listener doesn't even know they are there.

But we'll never know how successful a pirate is, they have no ratings, no budgets, no reporting, etc.

I dare say that most pirate stations are mainly ego trips for the people that run them.

They are selling local commercials and filling clubs so someone is listening. Listen sometime money is being made by some of them.
Don you absolutely crack me up. EVERY PERSON THAT SITS DOWN BEHIND A MIC OR IN FRONT OF A CAMERA IS ALL EGO ALL THE TIME. Why else would they be in the entertainment business?

Yeah that's why Jamn 94.5 is one of the top stations in the market.

Jam'n 94.5 doesn't really serve the urban African-American community, though. It's more geared toward (mainly white) teens and young adults in the suburbs. My point was that the old WILD (in its heyday) served the adult African-American community AND it's programming could be enjoyed by various others around greater Boston. Some of the urban audience will listen to Jam'n by default because they have no other choice, when they're not listening to a pirate like 87.7 or to their own mp3 players, iPods, etc...

Radio Disney is partially aimed at the PARENTS who happen to be within earshot when their kids listen to it. Not many families (maybe some wealthy ones) just throw unlimited money at their "'tween" (pre-adolescent) children that Radio Disney is aimed at. For the most part, the parents have to decide whether to purchase the junk advertised on Disney for their kids when they want it. And, I think one reason that there are oldies in the Disney music mix may be to give the parents something they can relate to when they're putting up with their kids listening to it. I'd bet that some parents prefer that their kids listen to the "safer" Radio Disney than for them to move on to Hip-Hop on Jam'n or CHR on Kiss.

Those "shopper" newspapers are selling ads too....doesn't mean anyone is reading them.

That is true for any form of advertisement and there are many, many other jobs.

The ads are aimed at kids in the same manner that TV ads are aimed at kids. Then if the kids whine enough they usually get what they want. I listen to it every now and then they play oldies that you don't hear anymore on the stations.

Yes, this generation of kids is so deprived of material things. They all have iPods and many of them have cell phones not to mention mommy and daddy camping out at their local store during the holidays for whatever piece of junk is big this year.

If parents are concerned about what is on the radio, not that the young generation listens to it anyway, they had better remove the kids computers because what they have access to today is much worse than anything they can hear on the most objectionable radio station.

That is true for any form of advertisement and there are many, many other jobs.

However, you find the job that suits your talents.

I suppose an accountant can get a job washing dishes at the cafeteria...but that wouldn't be using his talents.

No, because it has made me a good living.

That's not true of pirate operators.

Not all pirates do it for money. Some do it JUST for money and if the bill you have is the power bill I can't see why you couldn't do pretty well.

Yeah, much easier to make a good buck in TV and much more secure.

I haven't been on the 80 meter band in years has it become raunchy? It used to be pretty decent especially th eguys that operated the old AM broadcast transmitters on the 75 meter band.

80/75 meter ham band

Ah yes, spent alot of time there, back in the day!
CW on the lower end of 80 meters. SSB on 75 -
although I did run an old Heathkit Apache for a
time with 180 watts peak full fidelity AM. Occasionally,
someone would tune slightly off frequency and notice
that my carrier was present, and be amused by that.
Yea, it took up a bit more bandwidth to run AM,
but it sure sounded better than SSB!

I think the most impressive ham was a guy named Tim (WA1HLR) who lived in Maine. I thought he was a shortwave station when I was a teenager. He couldn't have been much older because he is still around his voice and personality that reminded me of the late Jean Shepard.
Timtron in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sl-DY8IsUB0
It's good to see he's still with us and crazy after all these years.

Ah yes, the Timtron, WA1H--yel-R. There is a blast
from the past! Mike, what is your ham call, if any?

I met Wayne Green (73 Magazine) at a convention once, many
years ago. So, I said to him, "oh you're the infamous
Wayne Green!" He almost busted a gut laughing!

the You Tube video...

Just checked it out.
On guitar, Eliot W1MJ (ex-WA1MYK) from
my hometown (Sharon). We also went to
UMass Amherst together. Too cool!
