Piers Morgan

Okay get out your poker chips folks because it's time to place a bet.

How long will Morgan's show last before the "suits" at CNN pull the plug?

One year. Two years TOPS. No way anything more than two years. He'll probably see the writing on the wall when the ratings come out and then he'll just decide to leave on his own so that it doesn't look like he was fired. That's my prediction.

I'm going to make an exotic bet here:

Not only will the remainder of Morgan's contract be bought out in June, but around that same time, the new 9 PM host for CNN will be announced. Not only will be have a little extra free time (if you can call it that when you're working a dozen jobs at once) come June, but he has guest hosted that time slot on that very network in the past. In fact, he and Larry are very good friends...

Seacrest... out!

...there's a talk radio host in London named Nick Abbot. For years in the '90s, while Abbot worked for Virgin 1215 and TalkRadioUK, he would frequently call Morgan's office at the Daily Mirror and News of the World. Abbot would always ask the switchboard operators (at both locations) for "Piers Moron," and at both papers they immediately put him through to Morgan's office, without question. Just FYI ;D ...

I refuse to predict the demise of a show that hasn't even started. That having been said, his promos come across as arrogant, and ego-driven. Not a good sign.

Parker-Spitzer seems to be more on life-support at this point.

I just don't think he can cater to CNN's audience in that timeslot.

Plus, why are we letting the Brits take over our American airwaves? Nothing against them - and I certainly understand globalization - but it's kind of disappointing that an American wasn't selected for the gig. A Brit was also the face of the most popular show on TV for years (a little singing competition), and now people are already saying that show won't last with a panel of American judges. Pretty sad for our country if you ask me.

It's part of the charm Simon has...the other piece was his scathing criticism. Had it been an American with the latter aspect, it probably would have worked.

What do you need to succeed on that channel, in that timeslot?
A few key qualities;

--Strong interviewing skills, including the ability not only to ask intelligent, penetrating questions but the willingness to listen closely to the answers and do good follow-up.
--An appealing, easy-going personality with enough energy to keep up the pace but not so frenetic you wear out the audience
--A good knowledge base
--An understanding of what your target audience (35-64 men and women) cares about, and why
--A viewpoint of your own, which you make clear without hammering viewers over the head with it

There have been hosts in the recent past (Bryant Gumbel, the late Tom Snyder) and present (Charlie Rose) who could clearly fill the bill. We could put Joy Behar on that list too, and although I've never seen this side of his work, Larry King thinks Ryan Seacrest could do it as well.

Can Piers Morgan?

Who knows? Based on what American viewers have had the chance to see of him, there's no way to know.

Maybe he can. Maybe he can't. The boss who hired him and signed him is now gone, his successor has no particular commitment either to him or to his lead-in. The new bosses are committed to a contract, but not to the programming strategy behind it. They'll give the show every reasonable chance to succeed. But what that whole daypart on CNN will be like at the end of 2012, is entirely up to how many of us watch.

Be thankful it isn't Ryan Seacrest!

This is a long-shot, but it wouldn't surprise me if CNN approached Katie Couric in the near future and offered her Larry King's old slot after Piers Morgan is tossed aside.

Mark Giardina remarks, "This is a long-shot, but it wouldn't surprise me if CNN approached Katie Couric in the near future and offered her Larry King's old slot after Piers Morgan is tossed aside."

Katie Couric's contract at CBS, IIRC, expires at the end of 2011. If that's so, and if Mr. Morgan isn't at least as strong as Larry King was in his last few months (which were somewhat better than his numbers in the first half of 2010) this could very well happen.

A lot depends as well on whether or not John King, and then Elliot Spitzer and Kathleen Parker, improve their current anemic numbers in the 7 and 8 PM ET hours. If they can't, you could see a completely re-cast evening prime-time schedule on CNN come New Year's Day 2012.

Why don't we take away Fareed Zakaria's CNN show, while we're at it? ???
