Pigeon Back on WKLU.

I caught a couple of breaks Monday, and he was teamed with Libby...the breaks sounded awkward, almost forced...haven't had a chance to listen since, though.
 
Pidge didn't sound comfortable in the couple of airbreaks I've heard ... although he usually provides a good lead-in to the 45-minute "forgotten" song.
 
I've been listening this week, and I think that his first few days were spent shaking off some rust and beginning to create a groove. This morning in particular I heard him picking up steam, doing his usual seamless job of keeping his show moving. They were doing some phones this morning -- the calls could have been edited a little tighter (says the armchair quarterback) but it put Jeff more in his element and helped him sound more in command. jim
 
they should have either let him go solo (which they should still do) or brought in a 'fresh' female to co-host. Sounds like he's nothing more than a guest with Libby in there. If Libby is the answer, WHY did they need Pidge. And now they're saying WITHOUT Libby, Pidge would NOT be able to do the show (implied by the fact she is there.)

Still a waste of a good frequency. Pidge, stuck with a co-host and format that are dull, will burn out with boredom as the ratings continue to slide.

Sorry to be so negative, just an observation not meant to be hurtful of anyone's feelings. But me thinks once the newness fades, Russ will realize not even a talented morning 'jock' will be able to do anything more than the usual 3.1 rating. It may bump for a month, if that, but will soon go back to the same.

3. Over doing the GRRRREATEST HITS. Making even Tony The Tiger proud.

4. No one is talking about this radio station in real life. We are talking about Pidge in the radio business, but the folks in listener land are NOT talking.​

Is anyone talking about any radio station anymore? The business is dying and we're not helping by providing bland radio programming.

1. But they spent millions on processing. Doesn't matter if it sounds bad, they spent millions.
2. This chemistry experiment gets a failing grade. Doesn't matter how fresh and clean and refreshing the water is, when you mix it with dirt - you get mud.
3. That's the whole 'pig-vomit' thing I referred to earlier. Anyone that knows KLU from the inside knows they actually BELIEVE this sort of 1960-era management makes a difference.
4. BINGO -and how long before Russ realizes he's not getting any mileage out of Pidge, and starts hotlining him to get him to quit? Likely already.

So what you're saying air king is that people listen to radio for the FORMAT and NOT the DJs? Hmm, next you're going to suggest that the 'DJ On The Air Marathon' is a thing of the past too!!!
 
I hear basically a voice and that's it. Sad. Jeff is a brilliant radio guy.

A note to the programming dogs - eat a slice of humble pie and put your own ego aside when it comes to talent bigger than you. They are there to help you succeed not to threaten how much you know, or, don't know, about the business. In the real successful situations the talent will make alot more money than you do and they deserve every penny of it.

Pidge played the AC hits on the 1070 morning show for years, and was very popular, before WIBC became a news/talk station. I think he's up to whatever WKLU wants him to do.

He would have to be up for whatever WKLU wants him to do. He doesn't own WKLU.

It was still a plan to fail by WKLU. Russ would rather fail than let Jay Baker, Jeff Pigeon, et al. succeed and prove his myopic, tunnel vision delusion about what works in radio in this century be proven wrong.

Russ is the Al Davis of radio: Rich, arrogant and wrong.

Good luck to Jeff - one of the all-time good guys in radio. Most programmers are idiots, but we are no more stupid than the programmers were in the 70s. No doubt about the overall lack of stones and safety-first decisions being made. But, more people are listening to radio than ever. The popular opinion is that it's dying, but the opposite is true. Programmers and their corporate masters are taking fewer risks and doing fewer cool things. There are very few people doing anything fun just for fun sake because that behavior is not anywhere close to being rewarded these days. Unfortunately, that's why people are listening. Safety wins. Risky decisions are risky because there is a downside, and downsides are being avoided. Go figure.

Pidge is a good, solid, and safe choice. Risk would be hiring an unknown 24-year old kid with great pipes and natural talent. No one has the time or inclination to go find that guy or girl though.
 
The problem with young, fresh talent is that they have been raised on homogenized radio. Therefore, they have no perception of what 'good radio' was/is.

They're taught, and have for the past 10 years HEARD nothing but 'read the liner and keep the intro tight!'

So even great pipes and natural talent will be used for nothing more than typical voice-tracking type delivery.

Don't blame the programmers or managers - blame the owners who use the public airwaves as their own personal iPod.
 
Jeff is sounding like he is having fun this morning, with lots of talk and laughter concerning the debate and Joe the Plumber. Ho, I agree on all points except your take on us not blaming the programmers and managers for the mediocre sound of radio today. Someone has to stand up to the Dickey Brothers and David Fields' of the world. That is what the programmers & GM's are paid to do. They are supposed to be the liason between the talent and upper management who have no time for the social work that it requires to manage real talent. Rick Dees never got fired for throwing a cart at a producer and he was notiorious for doing that at KISS FM. Why? Because the PD's and GM's running that station in Los Angeles knew that the Mays need not concern themselves with anything but the frickin' stock market. All the brass in upper management will say- is how NON CORPORATE and unprofessional that is...fire him. Great programmers know this. I hope Scott Shannon is reading this. He is someone who is both the crazed talent, AND the great programmer.

I think what you refer to ho, when you mentioned personal the personal IPOD... is Russ' Rulebreakers on the old format. Whenever I spoke with people in listener land about this radio station during the old KLU days, the conversation was always either about Russ, or the fact that Jay Baker and Adam Ritz were there. The listeners really thought of Russ as a hero. Not kidding. Now, they are simply not saying anything about this station. It doesn't come up in random conversation at all. What does... is the fact that Jack stole a great format and a great radio station from Russ....and that many are now listening to 104.5.

On a final note, congrats to Jay Baker for returning to Q95 recently. Adam Ritz needs to return to X 103 again, and then we will have come full circle on this here topic. Thanks for hearing me out.

Right on with that! Congrats to Jay! I believe his first afternoon on the air is tomorrow. Can't wait to hear him back on the air. Hopefully it will be the start of reviving some great Q95 moments.

Jack...STOLE a (great?) radio station? What...did Russ GIVE WKLU away?

There's a way to do radio the right way...and a way to do it the wrong way.

Programming and Management...ratings don't lie.
 
I'm talking about listeners here ho... Perception.

The listeners want to know why wklu changed to oldies when Jack stopped calling themselves Jack and took on Classic Rock.

How many listeners do you know? Are you taking a poll?

Be honest - YOU want to know. There is no, has been no, and will be NO buzz about WKLU.
 
My family lives in Indy and I pay attention to what they and their friends say about radio. No polls. Just observation that I probably should have kept to myself.
