Pintek to 12-3pm on KD

Cracks me up when all I hear is about the liberal controlled media.

Lynn Cullen can't buy an hour on local radio.

I used to like Mike, but now he's nothing but a Limbaugh/Honz wannabe.

And he always referred to Mayor Murphy as Mayor Smurphy.

Good luck Mr. Pinhead.

According to this report (http://www.rbr.com/radio/radio-programming/20536.html):

"With the move, Pintek – who started at KDKA in 1982 as a news anchor/reporter – has now served in every daypart on the station."

An interesting achievement, considering he had actually been laid off by KD five years ago, before returning to the station to hold down the primetime slot last year.

(Re: Parttimer/71dude above...)

Mark Levin isn't cleared in the Pittsburgh market, is he?

That's also being reported by the P-G.

Apparently he's from New Castle (wasn't former Kansas football coach Mark Mangino also from there?)

I've never heard him, but KBN is a really solid operation... you can pick them up in the North Hills (and you practically can't hear 970 here when you're looking at their towers). KBN's 9A-noon guy Dan Rivers is very good, so if this guy's on a par with him it could be a good pickup.

And it's like the old days... guy from Youngstown makes the jump to KD.....

But I'm very (pleasantly) surprised that they hired another local show.

According to Dimitri's Facebook page the 6pm-10pm slot will be filled by Robert Mangino from WKBN AM in Youngstown.

Ugh!! ANOTHER right winger! Why aren't they using Mike Romigh for this slot?

Only the most empty-headed people wanna hear the same opinions day in, day out.

So predictable. So boring.

Mangino is one of the best "center-left" hosts you will ever hear. After you hear him for a while, it also becomes clear why his listeners refer to him as "Mangenius". He does not refer to himself as that, but could. I can't wait to hear what the "tow the line" conservatives do when he gets on the air. He could also talk any one of KD's hosts into a corner in about 3 seconds.

I've heard Rob Mangino on KBN, and he is not a liberal. Unless you consider anyone who is to the left of hatemongers like Savage, Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck a liberal. But if you are expecting Ed Schultz or Randi Rhodes or even Lynn Cullen or Mike Romigh you will be greatly dissappointed. But he does an intelligent show, as compared to the above. Will be interesting to see how he plays in Pgh.

I've been listening to KDKA much of the day due to the storm, and I think it is fair to say that February 6, 2010 officially marks the end for a revered full-service heritage station.

I tuned to KD in the morning thinking that they were the only station likely to have live coverage of the storm. My mistake. They would not even break out of The Healthy Performance Hour or the True Value Home Improvement Show. In the past they'd go wall to wall news, weather and announcements. With all due respect to those of you in the sales department, it's clear the public service priorities have done a 180.

The evening was even worse. The host was getting calls from elderly people at home with no electricity or heat. He actually advised one to go to the garage, crack the door, run the car and car heater while listening to KDKA. Someone from the Fire Dept. called a short time later to tell him this was a bad idea. Then he had the PR spokesperson for PA American Water on. He started asking questions as if the issue was water that was unsafe to drink. When she told him the issue was a conservation order due to a plant being without power, he proceeded to grill her, hard, implying that she was either lying or incompetent or both. (guess the memo has gone out for their hosts to be in full Marty Griffinization mode)

They were also begging, on air, for someone to come and deliver pizza to their producers and interns. Then the PR rep for Duquesne Light called, and again was grilled and treated like he was lying and/or incompetent. The host asked how many crews they had out, and then implied (as if he knew) that this was insufficient! Then he grilled the guest about the aforementioned PA Water plant, only to be told that they were supplied by Allegheny Power. Then he asked the guest why they don't do a better job of tree trimming in order to prevent these problems. The guest responded that they cannot touch trees not within their right of way, and often they encounter resistance from local residents when they do cut trees. This led the host into an impassioned diatribe against tree-hugging NIMBYISM, before going back to bashing PA Water for not having enough water buffaloes and backup generators.

All I can say is, Frank Conrad must be rolling over in his grave. What I heard today would just horrify anybody who has ever taken pride in radio broadcasting as a profession and a craft. Thank God for TV and the internet, because if the public had to rely on these clowns for critical news and information they would be SOOOOO SCROOOOOOD!

If I could have gotten through I was going to suggest that they offer to power-up the PA Water plant by shutting down their transmitter and ending the massive waste of electricity.

When people ask me about the current state of radio, I toss out three names. Eddie Crow, "Q" and Dimitri. That says it all.

I bet those shows pull in a pretty amount of brokered $$$ for KD...

I was without power the entire day and tuned in to KDKA hoping to get some news and information. I couldn't believe it either when they stuck with their paid lineup. I was so ticked I called them to leave a message. They even ran a couple of hours of Tradio. And stuck with CBS News at top of hour reporting on the snow emergency in Virginia!

I heard Dmitri's stupid bullying of the water & power company. And yes the advice he gave the elderly couple could've resulted in their deaths.

They should stop badgering Mayor Luke about dropping the ball over the weekend. KDKA management were equally out to lunch - or perhaps in the Laurel Highlands as well.

I too lost power Friday and Saturday and they were the ONLY source of news at all that I had access too. I think Rob Pratt did a good job on Saturday balancing between giving local updates and keeping the money train rolling. I also think that they have been a valuable resource during the week, giving people a chance to vent and also giving the local authorities the chance to get the news out and take calls/questions.

I actually haven't heard much of Mangino, but he has done well in Youngstown.

Youngstown is not a good market for true syndicated "Republican/conservative" talk radio. It's a Democratic stronghold. Hosts like Mangino, middayer Dan Rivers or afternoon driver Ron Verb (the most "liberal" of the bunch, and he'd be somewhat lost on a "liberal talk" station) are traditional populists, almost "conservative Democrats" more than anything. There's a reason 'KBN doesn't run Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity...they don't speak to the market or the station's audience, which grew up on Dan Ryan.

Perhaps the best way to characterize Y-Town is "The Mahoning Valley vs. the World", and former congressman turned ex-con turned radio host Jim Traficant is the best example of that mentality. It'll be interesting to see if being on 'KD changes Mangino's style, though I'd bet against it.

Oddly enough, Beck is heard in the market on a rimshot Christian rock/hybrid FM out of western PA, as is Premiere evening host Jason Lewis. ('KBN has had Rush for a long time.) Western listeners in the market can get Beck on WTAM out of Cleveland (Jimbo's radio home on Saturday), eastern listeners out of WPGB.
