I've been listening to KDKA much of the day due to the storm, and I think it is fair to say that February 6, 2010 officially marks the end for a revered full-service heritage station.
I tuned to KD in the morning thinking that they were the only station likely to have live coverage of the storm. My mistake. They would not even break out of The Healthy Performance Hour or the True Value Home Improvement Show. In the past they'd go wall to wall news, weather and announcements. With all due respect to those of you in the sales department, it's clear the public service priorities have done a 180.
The evening was even worse. The host was getting calls from elderly people at home with no electricity or heat. He actually advised one to go to the garage, crack the door, run the car and car heater while listening to KDKA. Someone from the Fire Dept. called a short time later to tell him this was a bad idea. Then he had the PR spokesperson for PA American Water on. He started asking questions as if the issue was water that was unsafe to drink. When she told him the issue was a conservation order due to a plant being without power, he proceeded to grill her, hard, implying that she was either lying or incompetent or both. (guess the memo has gone out for their hosts to be in full Marty Griffinization mode)
They were also begging, on air, for someone to come and deliver pizza to their producers and interns. Then the PR rep for Duquesne Light called, and again was grilled and treated like he was lying and/or incompetent. The host asked how many crews they had out, and then implied (as if he knew) that this was insufficient! Then he grilled the guest about the aforementioned PA Water plant, only to be told that they were supplied by Allegheny Power. Then he asked the guest why they don't do a better job of tree trimming in order to prevent these problems. The guest responded that they cannot touch trees not within their right of way, and often they encounter resistance from local residents when they do cut trees. This led the host into an impassioned diatribe against tree-hugging NIMBYISM, before going back to bashing PA Water for not having enough water buffaloes and backup generators.
All I can say is, Frank Conrad must be rolling over in his grave. What I heard today would just horrify anybody who has ever taken pride in radio broadcasting as a profession and a craft. Thank God for TV and the internet, because if the public had to rely on these clowns for critical news and information they would be SOOOOO SCROOOOOOD!
If I could have gotten through I was going to suggest that they offer to power-up the PA Water plant by shutting down their transmitter and ending the massive waste of electricity.
