Piolin Out - How Does This Affect Univision

AZJoe said:
Piolin is now going to get his own channel on SiriusXM....... :)

And he is apparently going to be on the expanded tier of channels along with the other Spanish language offerings... for which nearly nobody has a receiver yet.

if you have a build in sat car radio, would that have to be upgraded or replaced completely.?

That is a good question.

I know that some car electronics systems are modular, like the cards in a desktop PC, and some can be upgraded if the manufacturer makes a replacement.

I suppose that there is something on the Sirius XM site about the expanded channels that explains this, but I did not find it.

I have three Sirius XM subscriptions on cars that are about 3 years old, and I have not received any eMail or regular mail about those channels. Maybe they don't want to tell me that "We have it but you can't get it..."

Do you think this will be like the Howard Stern move from free radio to paid radio? In terms of the loyal fans who would not have paid for radio before doing so now to hear their favorite morning guy?

If this is in anyway like the CBS situation with Stern leaving, Univision would have reason for concern, we all know the disater that was "Free FM" after Stern left. The hosts like Rover tanked these stations from the top 1-10 in mornings to about 310th in the money dems and overall numbers.

Should Univision be worried at this point? I wonder if the sexual charges against Piolin will change the respect of him in the Mexican community due to the strong family and moral values of Mexicans. Maybe this is not the case with Piolins fans, the Mexican and Costa Rican friends I have are very spiritual, family values type of folks. 2 of the people I know who are second generation Mexican American said this kind of charge of wrong doing has made them very unhappy about the show and they have no desire to listen to him now.

The people I am talking about are very family oriented and religous, so maybe this won't be as much of an issue with less religous folks.

The OEM (factory) Sirius/XM radios won't upgrade to SiriusXM 2.0, nor will any of the other radios they've sold.

For the 2.0 content you either have to have a new SiriusXM Edge or Lynx receiver or you have to listen online or through the mobile app.

As it is, satellite seems to be where radio shows go to die, but getting stuck up in the upper channel tier right now is the satellite radio equivalent of being stuck on an upper channel digital cable tier 10 years ago when most houses didn't have a digital cable box.

Any growth of that channel tier is probably going to come online, as the 2.0 radios have been out for 2 years and have about as much buzz in the marketplace as HD radio. (They're about as well understood in the marketplace as HD Radio, too.)

Buying a new sat radio for the car, I bet many people will just put the money into a new smart phone. I was going to get a HD radio with some "points" I earned from a credit card, but then the "redemption center" discontinued them.

I think Piolin should get a TV show.

So... is Univision radio getting a new morning show? I've seen some stations put in dayparts from other slots in the morning, but this might be temporary.

You'd think they'd consider putting Raúl Brindis on weekdays, since he's already syndicated Saturday mornings to Univision stations outside of South Texas. Or is he too "norteño" for California and Chicago?

Piolin was taken to task by not being "political" enough in a couple opinion pieces I saw, of course that wasn't the kind of show he was doing. They still have his picture in Food City over the fruit and onions, with the thumbs up gimmick. He makes a good foil for people like John and Ken. if he didn't exist, they would have to invent him.

Thanks for the answer.

I went exploring "south" of the traffic channels and discovered my 2011 era radio get the Spanish language tier, around Channel 140 or so. I listened a bit, and the music channels seem more compressed than the other channels, and the talk channels like Radio Fórmula are very "artifacty" sounding.

So, I am guessing that the Piolín Channel will be somewhere in that vicinity.

He was already tried in San Francisco

He's apparently going to be put in El Paso, but it looks like they're not even trying to get a big national show like Piolín was.

Dallas moved the Primo show to mornings. Chicago, LA, Phoenix, San Francisco, bupkus as of yet. This probably takes time, but you can't bide too much time for the baboon and the grouchy old man sneak up on you.

In the last channel shakeup, all of the Sirius exclusive channels (CBC et al) moved to the XM platform and vice versa and stuck in the 100s, but they were done at such a low bitrate that they're almost unlistenable. Some of the Canadian music channels are being run with the same lousy codec. It's getting complaints from the Canadians.

This may improve later this month, as all of the Clear Channel music channels except for Z100 and KIIS will exit following Clear Channel selling off their stock. Those were all at the original 2001 bitrate and all sounded quite good. Once those go away, that's bandwidth that they can reallocate to other channels to improve the quality and they will have space for a decent Piolin channel. Or they can keep shrinking the bitrates and just put on new channels. Time will tell.

The Xtra Channels (SiriusXM 2.0) are in the 500's. The Latin channels in that group are Aguilla, Latidos, Rumbon, La Kueva, Caricia, Luna, Flow Nacion, La Mezcla, Viva, Radio Formula, and Deportes en Vivo. (The web page also lists Playboy en espanol, but I'm not sure if that's current as the Playboy licensing deal was up in May.) Some of those channels are also in the 140-150 range, but I would presume that the 2.0 radios can get them in the 500's with better fidelity. I would be pissed if I paid money to hear my favorite channels running through the traffic and weather channel codec.

The sound quality on most every channel these days is degraded as they've jammed more channels into the service, but nothing says "we don't care about you" quite like playing music through a codec that barely passes voice.
