Pirate on 87.9 (sorry if already covered)

..i searched the pirate threads and didn't find my answer...

Last week I was up at Hampton Beach, NH and there was a pirate on 87.9 playing all sorts of stuff...vintage surf, ac oldies etc.

Tonight I was driving through Winchester, MA and received a pirate on 87.9 playing oldies. The audio and modulation seemed the same as the one I received up on the NH seacoast....

are they the same? any info on either one?

Without listening to it I would think it's the Boxford one which I picked up in Haverhill and on Rt 97 heading toward Beverly...there was even a lawn sign I saw saying 87.9 The Wave somewhere around Boxford or Georgetown

theyre putting out a pretty decent signal then.

interesting.. thanks... and no web presence to speak of ...so it must be some old guy who thinks the internet is "a series of tubes"

Hello everyone,

Thank you all for the reception reports on the station. I am surprised to hear that the station has such an incredible range considering what I am using. I think a lot can be said for a clear frequency if I were on any other channel I doubt if I would be able to achieve the same results.

There reason I am here to report that over the weekend, while I was not at home my coax was cut, and in the process my transmitter was damaged.

The coax has been replaced and I am operating at greatly reduced power. I have reported it to the local police we are looking for information leading to the arrest of whomever did this.

I would appreciate any information from the grapevine as I know it will surface soon.

Thank you for listening.

The Wave

Hmm, that's funny...I don't seem to see an FCC licensed station for that place and that frequency. According to FCC regulations you must be licensed. Well, hopefully you can deal with this and replace it soon so you can resume
your illegal operation. ::) (Unless for some reason broadcast at 87.9 MHz is now okay. Perhaps someone down the block from you will also put on a station at 87.9, perhaps at an even higher power. Why not? It's a free country.)

I know, you are providing a service. Maybe the time is now to push the FCC to allow more LPFMs...

Well, I'm off to see my doctor. He never went to medical school and never got a license to practice medicine,
but he charges cheap prices...I'm sure I'm in good hands

Once again, perhaps someone will put their own pirate station right next to yours so you can't hear your favorite.
But hey, you love pirate radio so I'm sure you'd be okay with that. (How about a true variety hits station?
Coming up in the next hour at Pirate 106.3:

Muddy Waters: You Need Love
The Boston Pops: Michelle
Toby Keith: I Wanna Talk About Me
Metallica: Enter Sandman
Slim Whitman: Indian Love Call
Peter Tosh: Legalize It
Tom Lehrer: Silent E
The Weavers Featuring Pete Seeger: Tzena Tzena
The Dead Kennedys: Holiday in Cambodia
Run DMC: My Adidas
Anne Murray: Snowbird

Now THAT's variety! And we're right next to Touch 106 and powering it up so you can't hear them! :)

isn't The Wave calling the cops for someone cutting his coax like a drug dealer calling the the cops because another dealer stole his cocaine? I suppose its basic vandalism to personal property and he could just say its for a ham rig...but man its kind of amusing and interesting...if true. Maybe your neighbors are trying to listen to 88.1?

I did make a joke on boston-radio-interest along the lines of "officer, someone stole the marijuana plants in my backyard..."

Why, yes this is a radio transmitter but I'm only pushing a couple blocks, as the law says :)

Any unlicensed 88 to 108 MHz broadcasting with a signal strength greater than 250 µV/m at a distance of 3 m from the antenna is punishable by law and confiscation of all broadcast equipment
Common uses of Part 15 transmitters:
(...mini FM transmitters..."talking house")

I'm sad to report that last night the owner of 87.9 The Wave got a report from someone in the area that the FCC was on to them and that there was even an FCC agent in the area looking for him and he decided to shut down to avoid problems. At this time it is unclear if they will return to the air or not. I have no clue to what happened I just heard this via email. The thing that really gets me mad is that there are so many stations that interfere in Boston but yet they had to go after someone who was running a small community station that wasn't interfering with anything.

It seems strange that this would happen with this station. If anything, I would've expected something like this with one of the Dorchester/Mattapan stations.

I couldn't imagine what it would feel like to get a radio station that you put so much money, time, and pride into taken away from you. Thats why I operate under part 15 rules and online. Also I live and an apartment complex that has approximately 20 buildings with 3 floors in each building so a lot of people can tune into the station without breaking any rules. I'm on the third floor in the middle of the buildings on a hill so my 25mw transmitter covers a lot of ground. Even though i'm not gonna risk becoming a pirate I do enjoy listening to them and admire them for there bravery and hard work. It takes a lot of courage to do what they do.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL PIRATE!!!! 87.9 sounded pretty good. Just wait until the heat is off and you'll be back up and running. Any mail forwarding services that I can send a money order to? Happy to help.

Up at Hampton Beach this summer I was able to listen to this station and really enjoyed it.

It's not interfering with anything, and the dial isn't exactly crowded to death up there, I don't see what the big deal is.

Keep up the good work with the station, THIS is real radio for the people, the music mix was entertaining.

Some stations could serve apartment complexes/ nursing homes, etc easily and legally, like Companion Radio which runs in several places like the Blueberry Hill nursing home in Beverly (98.9), for a couple blocks.

That one is satellite delivered but someone could do a local one and hopefully not be breaking any rules.
