WLYNgm, I read your letter to the editor in this week's "Big Dig" while in the barber shop. While all your points are valid, you have to admit that coporate radio owners are out of touch with listeners. There's a reason why there are so many pirates: there's a mismatch of radio formats and the reality of who lives in Boston. This is a zero sum game, and out of town owners have poorly programmed the radio dial. Need I say more than WWZN, the Zone?
Interesting to note that these pirates, most aren't going after the WILD audience. Even when WILD-FM was on the air, we had pirates. Instead, they are programmed to the Caribbean community. Just goes to show that all these high paid out of town executives doing their painstaking market research can't get it right. They look at Census data and assume the entire black population is African American. I've always pointed out to people that in Boston, much of the black community is Haitian, Jamaican, and other Caribbean. Even Radio One couldn't figure that out.
