Pitt moving to 93.7 The Fan

What Pitt gains is a radio station all to itself. It doesn't have to share resources with all of the other sports franchses in town and will have more airtime for the same $$.

ISP has a long history with CC, so for them to be willing to jump ship says alot about what they think this can become.

What it can become, CBS hopes, is the new flagship for the Pirates or Penguins. Which will land Pitt right
back where they were with cc, no?

Of those two, they have the best chance of getting the Pirates. And if that happens, because of the seasons , there would be very little overlap between the Pirates/Pitt footbal and Pitt Basketball.

I think CC or whoever buys CC's pittsburgh's stations if they do implode, will fight hard to keep the Penguins.

What is really interesting about this story is the fact that Clear Channel took its sweet old time to confirm the WBGG-gets-WVU, WPGB-gets-Duquesne, even though West Virginia University already had posted WBGG as its Pittsburgh affiliate well before the grand announcement on WBGG -- given on an afternoon when Joe Bendel was on vacation from his afternoon drive show. (Sounds like Clear Channel figured listeners would consider it an afterthought. The fact that no one commented after he did so indicates that you think it an afterthought, too.) Also, CBS Radio Pittsburgh is taking its sweet old time confirming that it's got Pitt for KDKA-FM, even though it's now obvious that Smizik was correct many weeks ago. For CBS, this is the biggest coup since Sportsradio 93.7 The Fan came on the air ... but by the time it is announced there, who will care?

Smizik blogged more recently that there was a snag in the Pitt-CBS deal. CBS doesn't have the equivalent of a 970 to dump the womens games, and Pitt wants those as part of the deal.

93.7 is still CBS' best FM signal in the market, and Pitt still wouldn't be 4th in line like they are now at CC, so I doubt it would be a deal-breaker. They weren't on sports stations before, they were bounced from 104.7 to 3WS.

Pitt was never bounced back and forth from 104.7 to 3WS. It started on 3WS and has been there since first going to CC. Get your facts straight PTimer...or ask your old buddy DL for the correct information.

Wrong, old buddy. Pitt was on 104.7 for 2 seasons before moving to 3WS.

Well, I stand corrected. Thank you jbo. I do not recall hearing basketball on 104.7. Did 104.7 have both football and basketball? Why did it move to 94.5?

Yes, the whole Pitt package was on 104.7. Don't know the official reason, might have been because of conflicts between the Pirates and September football games.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Pitt decided they didn't like being on such a right-leaning station, that's pretty much a polar opposite to the University's culture.

Whatever the reason, they made the switch without much fanfare.

I'm not saying that Pitt's culture is tremendously conservative, but it has graduated such Republicans as Orin Hatch, Rick Santorum, and Dick Thornburg.

It's not Bob Jones, but it's far from Berkley, too.

Point is, Pitt was on WTAE in the early '90s when they carried Rush Limbaugh and then went to Dick Scaife-owned KQV for a couple of years in the late '90s. I've seen Pat Buchannan speak at Pitt and a ultra-right presentation concerning the possibility of a one-world government during G-20 at Soldiers and Sailors.

I don't think Pitt has a problem with 104.7's programming.

This makes sense. Thanks parttimer.

Sad when you think that about it, they use a legendary music station and throw 4th ranked sports teams on them.

I realize 3WS endured the Pens when they were going thru bad seasons, but Pitt, who is only liked by a certain percentage of people couldn't have ranked in ratings. Sad that CC would use that station as a dumping ground and abandon what they are known for, playing music.

Greedy CC.

In reading some obits of legendary NY Yankee PA announcer Bob Sheppard, who passed away over the weekend,
I was reminded that the only time in all of NY Yankee history when the teams were actually bad was when CBS owned them (1964-73).

For what it's worth.

Yes, it's tragic that those games got in the way of a voice tracked intro of "Brown Eyed Girl."

Given how many people want to hear "Brown Eyed Girl", and don't much care what kind of intro it gets so long as they can hear the song, compared with how few want to listen to a college basketball game, I don't see how chasing the bigger audience is "tragic".

You haven't lost your touch. The puppet changes, but that personality always comes through!

Boss I most appreciated your sarcasm and had a cute chuckle, but really, I do think it is tragic that they throw away the watts of 3ws for a team that isn't pro and with broadcast quality at times that sounded like they were from the inside of the Liberty Tunnel.

The good part is Bill Hillgrove's mistakes galore and Dick Groat's hoarse voice yelling will not be heard on a station that can get back to what they do best, play music.

Nice catch on Realist.
