Pitt moving to 93.7 The Fan

Putting sports PBP on a music station is a way to build cume. People who never sample your station for any other reason might stick around once they hear the music. You might even get a preset button. They come looking for their school, in this case... don't underestimate that.

Also, sports is normally a better revenue producer than your average evening music shift, especially when you factor in the pre- and post-game programing. Sports can produce revenue without ratings.

And while I applaud Pitt's loyalty, Groat in particular has become really annoying. He constantly talks over Hillgrove... and the last time he was a relevant sports figure in this town was 50 years ago (which raises the question, how old is he, anyway?)

Groat is 80. They put Curtis Aiken on last year to start easing the transition. They can't fire Groat, but they at least recognize that he doesn't add much.

Sad when you think that about it, they use a legendary music station and throw 4th ranked sports teams on them.

One other question... exactly when did 3WS achieve "legendary" status? A good solid oldies format that's been on for a long time, Merkel's been there 30 years, and what else? Nat Humphries?

I don't think you could classify any period in 3WS' history up there with the glory days of KQV, 13Q, WTAE, or B94. One could even argue that some incarnations of 96KX and WHTX were better radio stations than 3WS.

It's too bad that CC's "protect the mothership" mentality regarding male listeners and DVE prevented them from putting a good product on 970. That could have been a great home for Pitt, but now KD-FM will benefit.

3WS is legendary for three reasons...1) a grandfather station and call letters. (Rege Cordic and others) 2) 3WS has and is a model for other oldies statons (a known fact PT, ask your buddy DL) and in the last few years has been the model for evolution of the format. I think you're unwilling to acknowledge that because you don't appreciate 3WS the way a lot in the community do. (and that's another aspect of a legendary station...they strongly identify with the community). Winning multiple Marconi's for Best oldies Station adds to it, as well as being recognized numerous times in the radio industry. 3). Unlike 96KX and HTX, it is still here.

I'll agree with you on that one. WDVE is a stale station that is protected. 970 would've been a great place for Pitt.

>>> a grandfather station and call letters. <<<

Haven't heard anybody call it "Double Double" lately.

>>>a model for other oldies statons<<<

They hit the air sounding like every other oldies station, so not sure how this applies.

>>>they strongly identify with the community<<<

In what way?

>>>Unlike 96KX and HTX, it is still here.<<<

KQV is still here, too, staggering along with crappy ratings and a stale sound. Are they legendary?

Legendary only because of the K and 3 letters. In 1958 they tried to change the call letters to WASP but were turned down.

The call letters might be legendary, but the station isn't.

They were a major player in the '60s and early '70s, but that's also the last time the station was anything special.

The call letter thing is way overrated. WWSW was AM 970, and Rege was there 60 YEARS AGO. The 3WS ID was not meant to capitalize on those call letters but rather to distance themselves from them, it was modeled after 3WE in Cleveland.

Irrelevant PT.

Pitt made it official this morning ... it is putting women's basketball on WJAS-1320. Just a question: What stopped CBS Radio from carrying both men's and women's basketball on KDKA-FM?

The only thing more boring than watching women's basketball is listening to it on the radio. I guess it was like the wing man helping out his buddy by taking the ugly chick.

Anything outside M-F 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. means nothing to WJAS, so they're happy to carry the games and collect some extra cash for doing it.

The Fan doesn't have to clutter up its evening hours with something no one wants to hear.

Pitt gets the womens games on radio.

Everybody wins.

Oh really? I'd hate be working the phones at WJAS the first time a "damn game" prevents Aunt Ginny from getting her nightly fix of Steve & Edie or Englebert. Old folks still have phones and they are not afraid to use them.

Working the phones at WJAS? Are they all requests at night?

I didn't think it was possible to have a more awkward combo than the Pens and the X, but this has that beat by a country mile. It makes the women's team look sub-pathetic IMO.

Consider yourself lucky you don't have a WNBA team in your market. ;D

How many women's basketball programs are on the radio anywhere? This is actually about the best they could hope for... forget the format, 1320's a good, solid night signal. Too often smaller athletic programs end up on stations no one can hear.
