PITTSBURGH ARBITRON RATINGS: JANUARY 2011

Excellent numbers for WRRK, KDKA-FM, WPKL/WKPL, and WHJB.

Half of WWSW's audience disappears with the Christmas music. One wonders if the 3WS audience took
time to sample WRRK during the holidays, liked what they heard, and converted.

1250 drops off the chart. No real surprise there, but it's a darn shame to see it.

A very interesting month.

3WS current number is more or less in line with what they were getting pre-Christmas. It's even down from that, but it's not that far off from what they had in November.

I can't speak for the demos, but WWSW was consistently in the 7-share range pre-Christmas, and now they are
not. Combined with the spike at WRRK (which I believe is their highest number ever), one wonders again if some
sampling took place over the holidays that shifted the balance of power. Or perhaps things will be back the way
they were, come next month.

They were under 7 in November, and the Nov. to Jan. decline is consistent with the decline they had from Oct to Nov before the Christmas format kicked in and distorted the numbers.

I wonder if the unappealing morning show is catching up with them?

Talk about a super bowl bump, the Fan rocked and 970 had a huge jump--probably in part to Savarn's show starting.

I also suspect a few people found 970 after 1250 changed format. Perhaps they don't have FM radio in their
cars. :)

Stan (and maybe Bendel) will salvage something ... because otherwise this time of year ESPN is all NBA all the time.

Maybe it's time to get a pd who can fix 3WS. A little imaging, a jingle package, and try to put it back together. It doesn't have to be 60s and 70s like it was, but there's no reason to let it be a snooz-a-thon.

The music mix is lousy and the voice tracking has taken some of the energy out of the station, but those were both in place when the station had better numbers. To me, the biggest difference is the morning show, which is awful. Hard to believe there's a morning show where there's no conversation. It sounds dead.

Yet CC is convinced that it's how you win under PPM.

At the very least, their philosophy now is that ratings are primarily driven by at-work listening, so they are choosing not to pay for traditional morning shows in several formats.

In the case of some of their rock stations it has worked really well. Not quite the same success stories in A/C and classic hits formats so far.

As a longtime 3WS listener, let me give my opinion. If you enjoy hearing the same 50 songs played 24/7, then 3WS is the station for you. Their music variety, or lack of, literally sucks. It's gotten beyond being boring, it's just plain pathetic. The Morning Show with Jonny Hartwell repeats alot of the same stuff too, so even his show is not totally live. Oh, for the days of Merkel and Dickson to come back. When is someone in this town going to wake up and bring back a true oldies format for those of us that love the music of the '50's, '60's, and '70's.

I don't know what thread it was where someone complained about 3WS playing Piano Man all the time, and maybe I just never noticed it before, but I swear, EVERY time I turn on that station, it only takes one or two songs before Billy Joel is telling me that John at the bar is a friend of his. Maybe people have a drinking game going for every time it gets played.

I was the author of the all Piano Man, all the time post back in the Fall. Without my daily dose of Piano Man on 3WS, I'd have no reason to live any more. And if there was a drinking game for every time they played Piano Man, I'd be attending AA meetings by now.

The constant playing of "Piano Man" by Pittsburgh radio stations, whether the song fits their format or not (I used to hear it on WRRK when it was a real rock station), could actually be used by the Chinese government as a propaganda arguement against Freedom of Speech.

If I never hear the song again, it will be too soon.
