Pj butta out at kday

Wow that sucks because Felli Fell has been on Power 106 since the early 2000’s and I grew up listening to him. I have a hard time processing this right now.
DJ Felli Fel gone from Power 106? He was pretty much the last person from my growing up years who was still on the station. It truly is the end of an era. I enjoyed his songs "Get Buck In Here", "Finer Things", and "Boomerang" back in the late 2000s/early 2010s. The station overall hasn't been as good though, ever since they got rid of all the 90s/early 2000s music, but I still hung on due to my longtime attachment to Power 106. As a popular saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Felli had a longtime run, but I'm curious what's gonna come of KPWR going forward.

Same here. The station hasn’t been the same since Big Boy left 9 years ago.

Now we know:

Justin Credible moves from "The Liftoff" night show to afternoons while
"The Liftoff" co-host DJ Sourmilk stays in nights (7 PM-Midnight).

Such a shame. Meurelo Media has grossly mismanaged these heritage brands of 93.5 KDAY, Power 106, and 95.5 KLOS. Leadership is non-existent.

They bought Power and KLOS at cheap because Emmis and Cumulus were trying to get rid of them and they run the brands cheap.

They have a bunch of television people running the radio stations and they have no clue. And they can’t even handle their low powered television stations.

While Meruelo is a minority owned company, they are only interested in promoting non-African-Americans. Just look at the lineups on urban Power 106 and 93.5 KDAY. They barely had Black people, and now they basically have only 1. I guarantee you that they replace anybody who looks Black with a Latino and pay them cheaply as well.

Alex Meruelo is in over his head and all of his brands, radio, television and the NHL Arizona Coyotes THAT PLAY AT A FREAKING COLLEGE ARENA, are suffering and affecting people’s lives. Hopefully another company can step in and take Power 106.

Even after Big Boy left, I still listened for the Jump Off Mixes and their increase in throwbacks after dumping the Rhythmic Pop and EDM.
As long as the station is up and running, I will continue to listen regardless of what direction it takes. The reason why they ceased playing throwbacks is because the overlap with KDAY.

That's true since cannablizing your own stations is never a good thing. Personally, I would recommend Power to play throwback songs that KDAY hasn't touch to make the station a bit more interesting.

I would like for them to play more throwbacks as well but sadly that won’t happen because Power’s audience will not be familiar with those old school titles.

Let's not play the race card with everything that happens today. Power, a hip-hop format station, for decades, has been principally focused on later generation Hispanics, as has KDAY. There is definitely a much larger market for second and later generation Hispanics in LA than there is for African-Americans.

Again, Power is not and has not been for decades, an "urban" station. The "urban" format name (which has fallen into disfavor in some sectors) means "r&b. Power is a station that, even more decades ago, moved from dance into hip-hop and after Clear Channel did a more r&b focused format, Power moved to a more precise Hispanic focus in the hip-hop area.

The LA Nielsen metro area is 48% Hispanic and just 6% Black. iHeart has a good Urban/R&B station part of the Black audience, and Stevie Wonder's station has an immense and impressive history of serving that market. Meruelo has decided to principally serve other market segments,

I was thinking more along the lines of re-introducing some of the upbeat Rhythmic-leaning titles they played in the late 2000s/early 2010s. Just two years ago, Power 106 played songs like "Give Me Everything", "Party Rock Anthem", and "Like A G6" during their 9am throwback hour. They even played "Let's Go" by Calvin Harris feat. Ne-Yo during a noon mix in early 2022. I wouldn't mind if Power decided to go mass-appeal again, while leaving the strictly Hip-Hop/R&B sound to Real 92.3. I still heard those types of songs played on fellow Rhythmic 99.1 KGGI, so I don't think they would be too out of place on Power in 2024 provided they play the right songs.

Meruelo President + CEO Otto Padron acknowledged the changes made at their stations, citing the cuts are:

"...the result of continued headwinds in our industry but are necessary adjustments to enable us to build and execute our strategic vision for the future. This is a transformative phase that requires us to think differently about how we do business and how our teams are organized."

They did not buy Power and KLOS "cheap". They bought them at the market price at the time of the sale.

Remember that radio's overall revenue, adjusted for inflation, is off by about 70% since the year 2000. All stations have had to adjust expenses and budgets and staff sizing.

Yeah I enjoyed the “Rewind at 9”. Two years ago, Power 106 also bought back Ashanti “Foolish which was an oh wow for me because I haven’t heard it on Power 106 since 2002. They also played Tony! Toni! Toné “Let’s Get Down”(1996).

During that time, they've played "Ain't It Funny" by J. Lo ft Ja Rule and "Luv U Better" by LL Cool J.

2002 was a great year for Urban music.

Power 106 and 93.5 KDAY are both Rhythmic stations. Real 92.3 (KRRL) would be Urban.

Marci Wiser out on KLOS was quite palpable today even though the liners made it seem she was off for just President's Day.
She still had stingers mentioning her.
That's disingenuous.

If she's out, she's out.
Don't dicker the audience around.

I'll say let's wait till Tuesday, but I think I know what the results are... we all do.
Disingenuous results and promises on Meruelo's part.

I don't think Meruelo really knows what to do with KLOS and really do not care for any long running appeal.
If they could flip KLOS to Spanish they would in a heartbeat.
And there is really nothing stopping them from doing so.

Meruelo has gutted KDAY, KWPR, and KLOS to a complete empty shell of themselves throughout.
All identity of their former selves are forever lost to the new wasteland, never to return.

Radio is a business, but we are well over a precipice of how sadly it is run.

You get it.

Never chalk up to malice what you can explain by lazy.

Odds are the logs were done on Friday before the rest of the office knew she was out. Then it was the weekend. By the time came to fix the logs on Monday, they were already running. So... fix 'em for Tuesday.

It's the sort of small market crappiness that Los Angeles pros aren't used to hearing. But here we are.
