BREAKING - George Plaster No Longer With 'The Zone'

published by etaylor on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 2:12pm

Sources close to the situation have confirmed that George Plaster has indeed left 104.5 The Zone. Speculation began over six months ago that Plaster would be leaving following the news of Cumulus Media's intention to buy Citadel Broadcasting.

Apparently Plaster and Cumulus have retreated to their respective neutral corners awaiting the official details of the separation.

There is no word on where Plaster will land, but anyone that's ever turned on a radio will assume he is headed to the newest sports talk station in Nashville, 102.5 The Game.

Stay tuned to EFS as we continue to update the situation.

Okay.....as many of you know...and many of you don't....Plaz and I have been friends for nearly 30 years...and yes I have his cell number. Also today, in the sports box at L.P. Field, I spoke with Willie, Biddle, Kevin I., Pete Weber and a number of other insiders. Here's what the told me...pe4r-0q09qey weirui-7q

Won't Willy (&Chad?) be joining George sooner or later?

I think that is the big unknown in all this. My gut tells me this is the end for Willy and George and that Willy is going to try and anchor the afternoon drive show. It will be interesting to see how he does and even more interesting if he can keep the ad dollars that the show was pulling in.

Even though I don't often agree with George Plaster, I just don't think the ratings will stay as high with Willie being the main host as they are with George Plaster hosting, especially if Plaster ends up at 102.5 The Game. Willie may be a good sidekick, but I find the afternoon sports show boring when ever Willie is hosting. He just doesn't have the personality it takes to be the main focus of a sports talk show.

Look, Plaster was good for Nashville before the Titans and Preds. He has gotten about as much has one can get with his limited talent. Let him go to 102.5 fm. It will be nice and he will probably out draw the 3pm program. Fact is, however, that the morning and noon program is far better than the three pm program.

I'm pretty ticked that this has happened. I wasn't always crazy about his show but he and 104.5 had a good chemistry. I mean, will Kevin I. still be allowed to do impressions?

I hope he doesn't go to 560. If he does they better boost their signal because it stinks. Its why I hardly listen...because I can't.

I hope he lands at 102.5 and leads it to greatness. My fear is that 102.5 will go all espn which ticks me off. I *HATE* BSPN the worldwide bleeder of sports. I like local live call-in shows. BSPN cares about the northeast and "re-breaking" news.

I'm surprised Willy is staying to do his own thing. I don't fault him for trying but I've never really cared for him solo. He may not have much choice right now though.

Willy's contract was different from George"s... and with Willy, the Zone still retains a big part of the show they've had. Willy's always been the guy on the show that's had the sports smarts, not to mention the sports experience. George has played the "everyman" role, or better yet, the "everyfan". George has needed WIlly's wealth of knowledge and his experience on the college and pro level.

I'm told, though, that it's "Willy and Chad" for now until some further evaluations can be made for the post-George, post Citadel era at the Zone. Whatever they decide to do in the afternoons, you can bet if it doesn't work, they'll be moving the noon crew into drive faster than you can say "3HL".

Will that make it "3HD"? --it sounded a bit funnier when I said it to myself.

Well, Crums had good ratings on one station for a few hours. George just beat them to ruining the station. Why not trash it right off the bat, anyway? It's not cheaper that way. But, heck sometimes you just get lucky and save the company a couple of million dollars of ad production.

Kevin has said that before. I didn't believe him then either.

I have his cell number to but he never answers it. Does he forget to charge it? Too many sports stations on this landscape as it is. But in the blur of it all, Nashville has seemingly few real personalities. Until he relocates, he's gone. So with House and Bohan gone, and George gone, we have fewer magnets. Nashville was always a town of strong personalities. From John R to Ralph, Noel Ball to Supershan, Grant Turner to Pat Sajak. Coyote McCloud to Gerry House, Carl P to Phil V etc etc...when we discuss radio loosing zest and appeal, we just seem to be in a slump.

This is a topic that is bigger than Nashville, because every town can name its heritage personalities. And even though there still are live and local people in studios across the country, very few have the name recognition or the respect that the veterans got. Who replaced Ralph Emery? Eddie Stubbs is an award winning DJ, probably more knowledgable than Ralph, but he's not the star Ralph was. That's not Eddie's fault. The medium changed, and those who work in it found that the real personality wasn't the specific person on the air, but the entire station. And we can see the beginings of this change about 30 years ago, as stations focused on 24/7 formats, rather than a station of shows. Ralph played country music on an MOR station. That wouldn't happen today. Today, the personalities fit the format. Format oriented radio grew after the FM explosion. Show-based radio was how AM radio operated, even from the network days of the 30s. So we're in the declining years of show-based radio.

Is that a good or a bad thing? It depends. WSIX managed to keep most of its audience after House left. We'll see if The Game can survive the loss of Plaster.
