Platinum starting to sound more like Solid Gold

I was listening to Platinum 96.7 yesterday afternoon and heard an interesting music sweep.

Do you Believe in Magic - Lovin' Spoonful
Black is Black - Los Bravos
Who'll Stop the Rain - CCR
Don't Pull Your Love - Hamilton, Joe, Frank and Reynolds
If I fell - Beatles
I'll be there - Jackson 5
To Love Somebody - Bee Gees
Everlasting Love - Carl Carlton
A Fool Such as I - Elvis Presley
Happy Together - Turtles

They are starting to sound like KLUV Lite.

It sounds even better when Debi Diaz does her all-request hour at 5pm everyday. No telling what she'll play during that hour.

Ron Chapman knows Dallas radio. Given the increasing ratings, I think his expertise is evident for all to see, especially since Platinum is a less than optimal rim shot - not everybody has a decent radio in their dash, let alone a decent antenna on newer cars. And home receivers are even less capable, especially with dipoles not used or crumpled on the floor with speaker wire and power cords.

I, too enjoy Debbie's all request @ 5. But I query, "Is is truly all-request"?

It seems that it's like every second song in the hour and I'm wondering if she works from an approved list of requests.

When I was doing the midday show at KAAM, Noon Fridays was all-request and it really was. Someone once requested Jan Peerce and "Bluebird of Happiness" from like 1934. I played it. Never any editorial interference (Those were the days!)

As I'm sure my Radio Days are over in DFW at least, I will say what I've hear some opine privately:

Ron BABAY! Expand that playlist! Push the envelope! Cutting edge radio will be YOURS yet again! Total Greatness is just one Arbitron ratings cycle away!

Hire me - I don't get ulcers - I give 'em!

Since my radio exile, I've oft been listening to KPYK in Terrell. They don't push an envelope. They burned it a long time ago. Refreshing to hear top recording artists that were top recording recording artists when the moniker actually meant something.

Not afraid to sign my real name:

What is spectacular about being around 22nd in 25-54 and 25th or 26th in 18-49?

There are about 15 full power FM commercial signals in Dallas and about 10 rimshots, of which Platinum is one. They'll never ALL be able to be top 5 18-34 or 25-54.

Surely on an FM dial of 25 or more stations, a couple can be aimed 50+. Not most, not half, not even a handful. But maybe a couple.

Platinum is tied for #11, 12+. I figure if Platinum can bring traffic into some mom and pop retailers, it can make some money. It won't get any agency buys from Taco Bell or Budweiser, but how many Dallas rimshot FMs get those accounts?

See, that's the great thing about capitalism. We let the market decide. If there was a market (i.e. money to be made) in catering to the 50+ crowd, the market would be served. But there's not, so they aren't. But you want to change that? Why do you hate capitalism? ;DWhy do you hate America? ;)

And if they can bring traffic to some mom and pop stores, great. Will they be able to pay the salaries of a Chapman, a Debi Diaz, etc on what the Mom and Pop's are paying?

Paying the salaries of local employees wouldn't be a problem for a station with Platinum's ratings. Chapman's name alone gets that station some of its accounts. The issue would be the parent company's business model. Futile attempts to improve stock prices. Poor money borrowing decisions. Etc.

You sure about that?
As DE pointed out, their 25-54 numbers are anemic at best. And 25-54 is where the money is, not 6+.

So here's a little experiment. Take a look at the 20-some stations above them in 25-54. Figure out how many of them are Voicetracking, automated or running "the bird" (Rush, whatshisname from American idol-- Ryan Seacrest, Delilah, etc). There's a lot of stations that are probably making more money that Platinum that are cutting costs. What makes you think Citadel is immune from doing the same?

My point isn't that Platinum is immune to cost-cutting. I'm just saying that Platinum's ratings are probably good enough to pay its local bills and then some. If Platinum ends up having to cut costs, it will be because corporate needs to suck more funds into its black hole of corporate mismanagement.

Citadel cost-cutting continues. "Platinum" ceases to exist as of April, 2010. All staff gone. 96.7 will simulcast WBAP. No April Fool's joke.

Yeah right, I'll believe that when I hear it or see it.

I Doubt it. Platinum's ratings may be a little low, but not low enough to merit a format flip.

WBAP FM? Have they applied for the calls yet or do they still own them from pre KSCS days??

Any co-owned station in the same market can share calls if they are in a different service (provided they aren't used already in another city).

That loophole allows for K to W call changes west of the Mississippi or W to K changes east of the Mississippi, such as CBS changing top 40 WBZW-FM 93.7 Pittsburgh to sports "Fan" KDKA-FM last month (it is co-owned with KDKA 1020 and KDKA-TV there) or the creation of 3 letter call WJZ-FM 105.7 in Baltimore (co-owned with WJZ 13).

So, Citadel could make a WBAP-FM on either 96.3 or 96.7 at any point if it wanted to...no different than when CBS put KRLD-FM on 105.3.

Sounds like voicetracking to me. The time checks sure sounded like VT'ing with Debi saying "just after 4 o'clock" and "just after 5 o'clock". I don't know why voicetracking bugs me so much. I'm just too freaking old to enjoy radio anymore having grown up listening to live jocks.
