Platnum 96.7

Platinum 96.7

This is what we need in Austin. So far, I've liked it.

However on a slightly different subject: With the number of translators we have now in the country, I'm kind of surprised that Citadel hasn't put one up in Dallas to make up for the lack of a 60dBu signal. Is there not any room on the spectrum in Dallas to put a little 100 watter in downtown where it needs it if it is to serve Dallas as well?

Amazed at the lack of criticism of this format launch on this board. It shows what a bunch of syncophants many of you regulars are.

If Ron were truly in control, NONE of what was heard today would have happened...especially the part where he appeared on TV announcing the streaming website. It didn't exist for at least four hours after he announced it. That NEVER would have happened with Ron in control, and I'm sure that if and when he found out, he was furious.

This product was not ready for prime time, and still isn't. In a 25-54 world and a soft economy, this station is built for the same people that listened to it ten years ago. That's a problem, since they've all aged out of the demo since then.

If anyone but Chapman had launched this, you'd be tearing it apart.

The music, the delivery, the production values (and severe lack thereof) are amazing. NONE of the hallmarks of KVIL exist on 96-7 except the names of Larry & Gail. And they sounded as disinterested as I've ever heard anyone sound on the radio.

My suspicion: Ron is swallowing hard on behalf of his friend Farid. But he's devastated by this product that has his name attached, and NONE of his flair, creativity, delivery. I'm sure that had much to do with the delays in launching. A bit of infighting between 2008 local management and Ron's perceived corporate blank check from Farid to do it right.

Ron: Welcome to radio in the new millenium. You left at the right time, and it's a shame you would allow your first-class image to be marred in this way. The way Farid treated you as an asset in the old days has nothing to do with how he does (or ever has) run his business. You were too busy being flattered to notice how he has always treated almost everyone else.

Not a has been here. Very gainfully employed and sincerely sorry that you were suckered.

by golly i think you're correct but...like the ricky nelson song i'm listening to now...you've got to please yourself. that is what ron is doing with the music.IE: Tony Bennett, Segio Mendes, Etc... this will be evolving and mechanics will get better through time. this not to be a personality talk/music kvil or kluv, it's smooth and easy. I like the mix of music and will do very well 45+.

Commercial FMs cannot use boosters or translators to extend the range of their signals. Downtown Dallas is outside KTYS's primary contour.

I know I have heard the girl who does traffic's voice. Anyone know from where?

Re: Platinum 96.7 - non compete agreement?

I wonder if it is just a coincidence, but Platinum came on just a few days after the third anniversary of Ron's "retirement". Does anybody else wonder about the coincidence? Did he have to sign a three year non-compete agreement before he left KLUV?

he appeared on TV announcing the streaming website. It didn't exist for at least four hours after he announced it.

It was Up Before he Announced it...

It's possible the stream was overloaded during those four hours after the GMT broadcast.

Interesting playlist...not a lot of songs you frequently hear on the air. i.e.:

Captain & Tennille - The Way I Want To Touch You
Engelbert Humperdinck - Release Me (And Let Me Love Again)
Ray Stevens - Everything Is Beautiful
Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Whipped Cream
Perry Como - It's Impossible
Frank Sinatra - Strangers In The Night
The Brooklyn Bridge - The Worst That Could Happen (w/ Johnny Maestro)

I have a question... Why did everyone blast me for liking smooth jazz when it was "testing" older and now we have a station for people who used to live with dinosaurs roaming free? I'm just sayin'. ;)

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. The problem is... over 24 hours into this thing, I haven't heard any cowbell!

Jeeez!

A few of you need to get a reality check!

Look, the whole launch of this station was delayed, and it probably got to the point where they had to go ahead and kick it off, even if it wasn't totally ready. When push comes to shove, you know? Give this thing some time to iron out. Aside from the flip execution, I have enjoyed the station when I have listened. Give it a week or two before you throw the stones.

Yeah I can't wait to see KLUV pissing in their pants.

Now that I've had a chance to listen to the station, I don't think KLUV has anything to worry about.

The audio quality sounded a little muddy to me and lower in volume than the other four stations I frequent (92.5, 98.7, 100.3, 102.9). It could be because Mansfield/South Arlington is on the outskirts of its reach, which reflects a weak signal (compared to the other four).

Also, for a new station, there wasn't a whole lot of excitement. I was expecting "the next great song" when Henry Mancini's 'Theme from Romeo & Juliet" came on. That let the wind out of my sails but I held on through the next four songs and went away. I'll try again tomorrow.

I saw in Alan Peppard's column in The Dallas Longhorn News that Wendi, formerly from Y-95, way back in the day's of the Reagan presidency was one of the on-air staff. Oh how I lusted after her from that Miller Beer poster she made.........wonder what she looks like these days?

Jeff, I'm with you. I STILL miss The Oasis and I am NOT impressed with this new station, at all.

B O R I N G !!

I really hope that Gail didn't burn any bridges at Metro because I have a feeling she'll be going back before you know it... Ron should have stayed on his cruise. :-\

Someone from radio-info ought to fix the spelling on this thread.

How about "Platinumb"?

Although not aimed at my age range, I've tried listening a few times more since launch. It's surprisingly drowsy and boring. Being that the change has been talked about for quite a while and there are DJs with many, many years of on-air experience, one would think it would be a little more polished sounding and have some "personality."

The Observer has more background on it...
http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2008/07/ijust_basic_mathematics_it_sta.php

...and their original article on it...
http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2008/06/ron_chapman_takes_charge_at_kt.php

I do wonder how long it will stick around if the 25-54 ratings all the companies seem to crave don't come. The music, presentation, etc. seems like this is a match for 55+. A line from the 2nd article sums up the sound perfectly --- "[KTYS] switched formats, ditching its new-country format for ... music my mom will love, love, love. (At least, she loved this stuff back when it was known as KVIL's playlist during the Carter presidency.)."

re: Dallas Observer post

I can not restrain myself. I have never been so underwhelmed by a midday talent(shown in the DO post). Atleast he has toned down the fake announcer type stuff he did Sat. nights on KLUV, total PUKE. He still talks at you instead of to you.

I don't care for KLUV's weeknight talent either, but atleast KLUV has some personality.

Her name is Denise. She does traffic for 97.5 KLAK in the afternoons and is on Sundays from 6am to 10am on KLAK as well. She's got a great voice. By the way, a little FYI. 967thetwister.com now re-routes you to kscs.com. But I don't think anyone cares.

I was jesting a bit with that "KLUV peeing in their pants" remark. ;)
