Play 98.7 - is this how we now launch new stations?

I can't get 98.7 on any radio in the house. Only in the car.
Your reception problems can be cleaned up with a better radio with a better aimed antenna.

Brandon is close to the antenna farms in Riverview. Radios differ greatly in their designs.

Radio Shack has a good selection of radios that will do the trick ranging in price and flexibility.

I pick 98.7 and 92.5 up fine.

My problem used to be 99.5. Since the move from Tower Plaza earlier this year, it has greatly improved. (Thank You, Ralphie boy).

What Jeff says is true, be advised that wherever you shop for a radio; if there are online reviews; read them, often people mention good points and bad points about a radio, that won't be mentioned or even alluded to in the ads. (and I would look for at leave 5 reviews on a particular radio before thinking that the overall review is accurate.) Unfortunately for the people in eastern Hillsborough county 92.5 and 98.7's towers are not in the Riverview antenna farm complex, but in Indian Shores, so you do have to have a decent radio to pick up both of those CBS stations in Eastern Hillsbourgh county; for all of Pinellas' 1,000,000 residents reception should not be a problem......and as Jeff has pointed out he gets both stations fine, but of course he has invested in something more than a cheap $15 clock radio, I'm assuming.

For people in Brandon, Valrico, Gibsonton, Litha, Riverview and Ruskin, you are close enough to the antenna farm, where you should be able to receive the HD (Hybrid Digital) stations that broadcast from that antenna farm. (The Hybrid Digital signals have a much smaller footprint than the HD1 signal, due to much lower power levels.)

All good points and thanks to those of you who in some way or another agreed with my point that even if 98.7 has signal issues in Eastern Hillsborough, it has quite a few folks to sell and or program too elsewhere.

I'd like to point out that just as Brandon and Riverview have issues with reception of the stations in Pinellas or Pasco due to the close proximity of the big towers there, some of us have the same issues in Western and Northern Pinellas with say 94.1 and 102.5. Even though those towers are extremely tall and broadcasting at a full 100k, they're also quite a bit farther from the metro area. Penetrating buildings and reception on small radios are also a problem for them too. I think it's safe to say that every station has signal issues somewhere.

I get WDUV on my titanium hip so everyday is like being at the doctor.

At least it's a station you like to listen to.

Back to Mark's original point regarding station promotion. My two tenures with Scott Robbins were as much fun as a human is allowed to have. Worked with him at 96KIX and later, while in between gigs, at WHBO. Some may remember that HBO was getting major interference from a Cuban station. In fact, in our air monitor we were drowned out by the Cuban signal! Robbins saw an opportunity and developed a promotion. A listener even recorded a song with a title "We Don't Like Russian Radio" or something like that. To protest "Russian" radio Robbins organized a day on Clearwater Beach where the listeners and staff displayed a huge American flag on the sand. HBO was a daytimer and with the Cuban interference could hardly be heard, yet Robbins gained national publicity. The radio industry could really use another Scotty.

so how log with WPOI keep milking the slogin "THE NEW"? Its been 8yrs or so now Even their morning show host is anything but new!!!

The Point is NEW. It is now 80"s and 90"s------------not' the 80"s and more"

OK here's my question...if any station in the next few years, or as early as next year, wants to play anything from the last 10 years...what do you call it?
"WE PLAY THE 80"S 90"S AND ZERO'S GET THE POINT.". Even in the next ten years "WE PLAY THE HITS OF THE TEENS..."

But don't worry the 20"s 30"s 40"s 50"s 60"s will be here before you know it..

How about,"The NEW millennium's music first."
Or
"this music 'aught' to work"

Never really bought into branding a station by using a decade. Although in this era of small niches it may make sense as each decade does have a style and feel.

Personally, I don't care for naming a station, i.e. Bob, Jack, Tom, Dick, or Harry.

I didn't like the name "bone" when I first heard the name driving through Knoxville 10 years ago. And then...

How about : "Ladies and gentlmen! You are listening to the greatest hits of the 21st. Century!'

Billboards apparently going up for Play 98.7 as I saw one today along Park Blvd. Despite a few boards advertising the Buccaneers on US-103.5 and 620 WDAE and maybe one for WQYK here or there, I can't remember the last time I saw a billboard campaign for a local radio station around here. I think it's been a few years since I've seen anything from Cox and even Clear Channel who I'm surprised don't put more up since they own half the space around town anyway.

There has always been an arrogance in the media.

I've come to call in the "Seinfeld Attitude". If you remember George and Jerry talking to the head of NBC. He asks, "Why am I watching it?". George's response is, "Because it's on TV." Of course, the response was, "not yet."

Put it on the radio and people will find it doesn't always work. If it is a major area signal? Is 98.7 considered a major signal with the poor Hillsborough County coverage?

CBS also owns a good percentage of the billboards, as well.

I was listening for awhile but got bored. I need a good morning show to keep my interest in a station. I had the same problem when 103.5 started up. I get bored very easily waiting for a new station to hire dj's. I'll go back to it when they're a little more staffed.

It's hard to imagine this station competing without jocks unless it becomes the New Play with 98 minutes of commercial free music----but isn't CBS too cool and rad for that stuff? Right now they sound like a Cox station. Of course they have much better reception than WSMR.
