PLJ SOLD

(A necessary bump to this thread.)

The dominoes look to begin falling tomorrow morning, as PLJ has tweeted (and FB-posted) this: https://twitter.com/955PLJ/status/1125844119073492994

I'm assuming Todd & Jayde will publicly acknowledge on-air the station being sold...and maybe something else. Social media reactions are mostly foreshadowing the inevitable, with plenty of upset listeners. Mike Allan, several minutes ago, also mentioned a-must to tune in tomorrow morning.

On the bright side, I, along with a few others I've talked to, have thought of several possible ideas. What if Cumulus moves PLJ to 103.9, and have it running at a certain degree with some of the airstaff? Similar to the downsizing of WFAS, keeping the 'brand name' for advertisers, and maybe more $ for Cumulus than WNBM currently.

Will we see some of the staff migrate to WNEW (or other stations)? Of course, we can only speculate for now.

Not hearing any jocks tonight on the station.
They ran an ad encouraging listeners to tune into the Curtis and Juliet show on sister station WABC AM middays.

On 4/24/2019, Cumulus NYC VP/Market Manager Chad Lopez announced that there would
be a two-part special farewell broadcast featuring special guests and jocks from the past.

The Wed. 5/8/2019 announcement could be related to that along with the
acknowledgement on air of the sale to EMF (as noted above by poster AlNYRadio).

Outside chance that they'll announce a "last day" of the format.
I remember when 100.3 The Sound (KSWD Los Angeles) was in its last weeks (before changing to the K_Love format)
that it did not have a definitive end-date until less than one week before departure. Depends upon the closing of the deal.

On a side note: former PLJ PD Tom Cuddy is organizing a reunion (off-air) of
former staffers to take place May 21 in New York. Perhaps the station's
on-air tribute will occur around the same time for the sake of convenience.

PLJ deserves better than this.

ever since the switch over to soccer mom music central, and the same repeated songs over and over again, and weird song choices...ugh. rather unlistaenable. especially in the last few Todd centered years.

The only reason to listen WAS Scott and Todd and rocky Allen. at least for me. For Music, I always went to CBS FM. especially their disco saturday's.

once S and T got neutered, probably thanks to PPM stats saying listeners didn't care for lots of talk and long breaks, it was the beginning of the end.

Not really...they made the same mistake WNEW-FM made, and failed to grow and adapt with their audience. So their audience moved, and left the station vulnerable.

The big difference is that at least WPLJ had an audience at one time. WNEW-FM never had the ratings of PLJ...rather it had a small audience of rabid fans...who were eventually abandoned due the station's poor financial performance.

WPLJ did attempt to grow and adapt (NYBR to CHR to Hot AC, etc.) It just didn't grow into a station that was superior in any way to the competition.

Let me save you the anticipation for the switchover to K-LOVE:

reading the dentists board is always interesting. his harem is out in full force on his PLJ post. 'yes mr.sniffen!' 'you are right mr.sniffen!'

ugh.
I personally think that the last song should be 'thank you for being a friend'. with WPLJ after it.

May 31st it’s done! Welcome to the new world of broadcasting. It ended when ABC sold the O&Os to Citadel. Feel for the employees...they had 10+ years of crap, and then get pushed out of the plane without a parachute!

How do you know? They're in the AFTRA, and typically there are severance packages included in that. Likely covers them for the term of their contract.

I assume you know that the folks on the air are just a small part of the folks that work for WPLJ. In addition, how many of the folks on the air do you think will be able to find another on the air job ASAP, especially in the NY Market? Also, do you have a clue what first Citadel and then Cumulus has done to this station and the other former O&Os? This is a very sad light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

It's always bad when a radio station that is heratige and fans like go off the air. For me it was WBCN in Boston. The truth though is that if the station doesn't pull in rations and more importantly doesn't bill well, then inevitably this happens. It's always sad for the fans, but just like BCN for me 10 years ago, PLJ seems to have rode in a funk for some time.

The begining of the end for me was 2010.

Blanks left. Nolan was about to Leave. the show took on a decidedly mean, and un funny turn. I was saving less and less air checks.
and around 2012, I was ready to quit long before scott did.

only loyalty kept me around and the ghost of what once was. 2000-2010 was their best years of morning radio ever IMHO.

I didn't last more than 2 months into the todd show....and by then i jumped ship full time to cbs.
