POL...ADVERTISING

TV, both network and Cable will get a large chunk of the ad buys. But the stations that usually do well in political season are the AM talkers, as well as music stations like WNAK. It's about frequency and when your rate is lower, you can buy more because of the political rate card. Plus politicians want to reach the people most likely to vote so the AM stations, 45 plus are what they'd be aiming at. I can tell you who won't get a huge radio political buy, BHT and that X station.
At one point, when I was at 107, for a while they did not accept political rates because it averaged out and lowered their big rates to agencies. That's why, at least when I was there, they never openly solicited local races.
But as October draws near, you'll hear spots on WILK, WNAK, WARM and ESPN Radio. There are no hot representative races (state) this fall, even though they are contested. During the spring primary, when so many people were running for state rep, you saw very full commercial logs. You might see some action from the Kearney and Sherwood camps since Kearney seems as if he is in striking distance. My blog, The LuLac Political Letter will be keeping on eye on these media developments.

Pol money is cold hard cash in advance, so who'd want to turn it down? Cripes, the teevee stations drool over political buys. Carney is indeed within striking distance, and because of that, the DNC is pumping money into his campaign. Santorum could be a big spender here, or he could spend next to nothing. Either his campaign will try to damage Casey on his home turf, or they'll see it as a lost cause and put the money elsewhere. The 113th rep race should be big, but it's turned into a big yawn.

I'd love to subscribe. What are the rates? Is there a discount for people on this board? And do you know you mis-spelled "clog"?

Jeez O'Pete, David...if you're going to run a political newsletter, at least get the guy's name right. It's Carney, not Kearney. Maybe the ads aren't working.

TV and Radio will make a lot of money this month and next. Remember, the TV market stretches from the Delaware River to Clinton County. Scranton may be Bobby Casey's backyard, but this is a very big market.

YIKES!!!!! I stand corrected. It is Carney and on my blog I'm sure I have that correct. Must have been thinking about Vince Kearney the old WARM guy when I was typing this. Anyway, my blog link is http://lulacpoliticaletter.blogspot.com/ and hopefully all the important players names like Ubsh and Echney are spelled correctly. And Nigel, you are correct, this market does have a great deal of reach.
And Master G, that easy up front cash, no wonder the sales managers always handled the accounts. I'll never forget when I was working in Cable, Jim McNulty's rep quit to take another job. It was like a mad scramble of sales people who were trying to file for that account. The sales manager took it over to show impartiality.
A few years back there was a Magisterial Race in Wilkes Barre. Bill Amesbury vs. the wife of one of the O'Donnell brothers. I happened to file on both Amesbury and Ed Mitchell. It was unreal. The race was so tight, they nearly matched each other dollar for dollar. It was a nice bump in the old commission check. Then I left to work full time at the Call Center on S. Main Street and guess what............those accounts reverted back to the GSM.

The politicals are a great source of quick cash, but I hated taking money from a certain well known, Luzerne County based, extremely greasy political consultant. I always take great enjoyment when one of his clients loses. Slimey bastard!

The Sherwood-Carney race could be a bonanza, especially for the teevee stations. Latest polling shows Carney doing very well, which means that both the DNC and the RNC are gonna start dumping more and more money. Santorum-Casey likewise a big cash generator, since both of them need what amounts to the Scr/W-B television market to win. The Northern Tier counties, historically R, could go D, mostly because they loved Gov. Casey, so obscene amounts of money are about to be thrown at this campaign from both sides of the aisle.

If it's the same guy I think it is, you'll be happy to know he's on a bit of a losing streak.
