Pondering The UnKNWN....

Posted this evening on the World of Radio discussion board run by Glenn Hauser ...

FCC and CRTC Decisions and Applications
CALL CHANGES
1000 KOMO WA Seattle – Call change to KNWN will not happen (at least for now).

(NRC DX News January 25, 2022; published January 17)
Let's take a step backwards to understand where this could be coming from...

I reported exclusively about the call letter change in a paywalled article on December 31 (https://radioinsight.com/headlines/netgnomes/217651/domain-insight-12-31-komo-by-any-other-name/) that was then leaked here without attribution. At the time the FCC had inadvertently made the call change public. After the holiday, the application was moved back to pending status. As @fybush mentioned above, the FCC's databases are not properly updating and many call changes are requiring someone to call the representative at the call sign desk to get placed. The calls were moved back to pending status on January 3 where they remain.

The Hauser report is likely from seeing simply that the KNWN calls were active (albeit inadvertently) from December 30 until January 3 and then went back to KOMO. Nothing else.

It has definitely been interesting to watch this play out. When I found your report, I didn't realize the calls were already public, that was pointed out by another board member after the fact. In a previous post on this board, you did indicate that you know how to look for pending call changes, and I assumed based on that post that calls stayed pending until the following Wednesday when they hit the public database. By that logic, the latest the calls would have gone into effect was 1/12.

Or how's this for a new theory. KOMO, the call letters are clearly the possession of the TV station and Sinclair. But what about the trademark KO-MO? It's like Kiss or Bull or Warm...they are brands that have nothing to do with the call letters. So maybe the Lotus people who are clearly clever, said to Sinclair"...you go ahead an take the call letters." And quietly hung on to the branded name of KO-MO? I'm just sayin'...
I've been waiting for someone to say this, not surprised it was Jackson Dell Weaver who came to this conclusion since he knows this business as well as anyone. Sinclair can own the calls and lease the KOMO branding to Lotus, it's not a hard concept. They change their calls to whatever, keep it "KOMO News", Sinclair has the peace of mind knowing they can undo this at anytime, Lotus gets the heritage branding, listeners know nothing unless they listen to the buried top of the hour. How has this been an on-going conversation on this board? Seriously I'd rather be talking about Kokomo, AQH or Mamaknowsbest (Google it kids).

It doesn’t help that the FCC has been having issues updating their databases of late, particularly LMS.

Who knows. The callsign change was requested, approved, withdrawn and applied again with no specific timeline attached or anything. Just let it happen whenever they want it to happen. Geez.

Except that they never changed their ID when the KNWN calls were active.

Ok, I don't understand the "Kokomo" joke ...something with the call letters maybe?
Running reference over several years on this discussion board. There was literally a long-running topic about why more music stations didn't play Kokomo from the Beach Boys? It was akin to the discussions in other rooms about why Alternative stations didn't play more: (fill in Alt artist from the 2000's). Because if stations did, then surely their ratings would skyrocket! Wish I could say I was just kidding, but it's true. One of the more bizarre exchanges I've ever seen around these parts.
Also, KOMO and Kokomo came to mind.

One of those.. you had to be there at the time to fully get it. That is one old thread I will have to search out and read.
