Poor Joe...

Not only did Castiglione not get to call the ninth and ask us whether we believe the Red Sox are going to the World Series, his on-field interviews after the game have been sabotaged by what sounds like a cheap wireless microphone. More great radio.

Yup and O'Brien quipped that maybe it would work better when some champagne got splashed on it. Meanwhile board ops breathed a sigh of relief when Papi added the "bleeep!" himself (this is our bleeeeeeeeeep! city)

Can _I_ believe it.

And of course that has nothing to do with Entercom, but does have to do with MLB's deal: "ESPN Radio holds the exclusive radio rights to the series" so sadly that's why only WEEI-FM here will get Joe, Dave, and Lou. The same will apply to Cardinals radio and it would have applied to Tigers and/or Dodgers radio had they gotten into the series. It's been like this for several years now so blame ESPN and MLB for this provision of the deal.
NESN's broadcasters won't be able to call it either; you'll get Buck, McCarver etc from Fox. Just imagine: "Well, I don't like Buck and McCarver so I'll tune to NESN and hear their call of it." Nope. Fox only gets the TV broadcast.

Now, if you live within 93.7's signal you can put your TV on and turn down the volume and have your stereo play Red Sox radio. (And
you'll get to hear the call of a home run seconds before it shows up on TV).
For those who want the Red Sox network team if you happen to be outside that area:
--it's possible the local broadcasts will be heard on XM. They have been during the playoffs; not sure if it applies to World
Series as well. If you subscribe you can get it on your smartphone with an app, or on your computer for an extra fee

--tunein.com might be able to get you WEEI's call, but not sure; they do carry ESPN's call...
It's possible WEEI-FM's signal may reach a very small part of the Maine seacoast, or at least it seemed to come in
as I drove back from Portland one time... (OK it won't reach Portland but some of it may reach the area just outside
the NH seacoast)

(As article says, "And since the station’s signal is fairly powerful, some listeners in southern York County may be able to hear it." N. Yarmouth is further up though.)

The Phillies won it in 2008 IIRC, and Harry Kalas got to call it. I thought it was said in '80, when they won, they didn't even
allow a local radio broadcast, not even on the flagship but that changed. Kalas passed on just before he was about to call
a game early the next year, but got to do the '08 WS win...on the flagship

Note also:
>>He said his station will still air WEEI’s pregame show during the World Series, but will switch to ESPN Radio coverage when the game starts. But when (not if, when) the Sox win the World Series, most Mainers won’t be able to hear Castiglione and O’Brien describing the moment. At least not live.

Harry Kalas:

>>In 1980, after the Phillies won the World Series, Kalas and the rest of the Phillies' radio crew re-created the call that Kalas probably would have made...as MLB radio-broadcasting regulations at the time forbade local stations from producing live coverage of World Series games, instead forcing them to air the national CBS Radio feed of the games. Philadelphia fans were so outraged about this afterward that they started a letter-writing campaign to the Commissioner's Office, demanding a change to the rule. Due at least in part to this outcry from Philadelphia fans, MLB amended its broadcasting contracts the following year to allow World Series teams' flagship radio stations to air the games with local announcers.

nothing official yet but AndyFromWEEI on twitter told GlobeChadFinn they will attempt to put Joe & Dave on 850 as well for the Series; again, not official. There is a conflict Mon night with MNF which I'm sure RKO could take.

The MLB At Bat app will let you listen to WEEI's broadcast online. I believe that it's $3.00 for the remainder of the season to subscribe. The play-by-play is always blacked out over TuneIn.

WEEI 850 did wind up getting the Joe/Dave/Lou call (it was a few seconds ahead of what was on the FM); both wound up carrying ESPN ads ("Close shave America, close shave Barbasol") as part of being allowed to do the local broadcast (and carry it on AM, but with the local broadcast team not ESPN's).
If 850 made it up to Yarmouth ME--it does push north and south, this was really NE--that kid was probably happy to get the voices he was familiar with.

Re WEEI 850 carrying the Red Sox network call, yup Gm 1 was on but Gm 2 and last night's gm 4 were pre-empted by football and no doubt the same will happen tonight with MNF, unless they bounce it to RKO which is doubtful. For those on the North Shore who for some reason would like to hear the ESPN call on a clear FM, of course Sox network affiliate WBOQ 104.9 has it.

Back in 1967, both WCOP and WHDH both used the NBC radio feed. In 1986 local broadcast was allowed on WPLM AM and FM only as the flagship. In 1975 I can't remember who the NBC outlet in Boston was but WMEX carried the NBC feed.

Before the rules were loosened, didn't NBC let the participating teams' announcers call a half-inning each as a sop to the fans who missed their familiar voices during the Series?
